Maybe they were justified in ousting the Shah. I can't claim I know enough about that particular issue, but we'll say for the sake of argument that they were.

If the Shah was a dick, then yeah, kick him out. Put in whatever new government you deem fit. But just like we shouldn't be surprised by that action, they shouldn't be surprised if kidnapping a bunch of civilian personell for months pisses us off, and they certainly shouldn't be surprised if constantly threatening us and our allies decades later does the same thing.

If they'd stopped after ousting our puppet, we'd probably be cool by now, just like most of central and south America is. But they didn't stop at liberating themselves, and they haven't stopped after the hostage crisis or years upon years of railing against our country and our allies.
