as always, incredible show \m/

sucks that dark tranquillity cancelled, but i've already seen them and DTB and Opeth got to play longer, so it all works out. 3rd time I've seen Opeth, and it was as incredible as I could have expected. and it was fucking AWESOME that they played Under the Weeping Moon from Orchid, I had resigned to the fact that I'd never hear anything from Orchid or Morningrise live. great show

btw, if you saw the big guy up on the rail toward the left with the big afro, that was me...got in the mosh pit for the last 3 songs, so you might have seen me there

Their set really wasnt any longer than it normally is. They still need to play more of their older stuff.

Nevertheless, it was still an incredible show.

Yeah, and that kinda ticked me off. Especially when the people who worked there were promising a longer set....oh well.

I was hoping for some Morningrise, and something from MAYH in addition to Demon Of The Fall....

Here's the setlist:

Ghost Of Perdition
White Cluster
The Drapery Falls
Closure
The Grand Conjuration
Deliverance
Under The Weeping Moon
The Baying Of The Hounds

encore:

Demon Of The Fall

I could've done without The Grand Conjuration in place for another GR track....that song doesn't do much for me.

as good as Opeth was, I can't say that it was worth me coming all the way from Charlotte...the main reason I say that is because I could NOT breathe the entire fucking show because of how hot and smoke-infested that place was

and seriously, moshing for Opeth? fuck rednecks who don't know shit about metal and shout "play freebird" at any point during a metal band's set...I will kill the next motherfucker that I catch saying that unoriginal and entirely unfunny bullshit

I wanted to see DT real bad too, so that is also part of it...I had seen all three bands before, but DT is a lot of fun.

so yeah, I was wearing my Skinless hoodie, but only for the first hour until it got too hot...no one could possibly recognize the "The End" shirt I had on under because even I can hardly read the text...oh well

yeah, i much wouldve rather heard Reverie, or Beneath the Mire.

Or they couldve skipped all that and went for Godheads Lament, or Serenity Painted Death

They always neglect the Still Life album. My personal favorite

Man I couldn't see anyone that I reconized, you guys must have all been up front in that crowd before the bands started playing, or I'm blind. I had a black shirt that said "Incredible Pizza" on the front and back.

The mosh in the back right side of the floor during "Drapery Falls" knocked my ass over and my shoe came off

I saw you. The really fucked up guy in the wifebeater was touching your afro like he was petting a sheep or something and I was expecting you to turn around, but I don't think you noticed. And he wasn't doing it as a joke...He was seriously captivated by your afro.

I was really disappointed by DT Band. I had never heard them before, but they just bored the shit out of me. I told one of my friends that it sounded like the type of music you would put on and turn way down as background music when you have company, but I couldn't see myself actually listening to it.

Did y'all see the girlfight at the end? That girl with the red hair had a deathgrip on that short girls hair. I felt bad for her because I know she would have fucked that short girl up if her friend didn't keep sucker punching her.

they played for like an hour and a half right? I wasn't paying close enough attention since it took like 67 hours for them to actually come out after everything was set up.

I liked the DT Band, but it did get a little old after about 5 songs.

I enjoyed the Devin Townsend Band a lot. Picked up Synchestra at the merch table after the gig, and it's been kicking my ass ever since. It definitely seems like one of those albums that grows on you.

Steve Vai does a solo in the song "Triumph" as well....

Yeah that was bullshit. I was looking at setlists from the european leg, and they're pretty much the same length. I guess they promised an "extended set" just to keep people there....

I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable metalhead elitist of sorts, and I moshed for the last three songs. I've seen them twice before last night, I know what I can expect from them on stage. I wanted to get physical and I don't see how that has anything to do with my understanding of the music.

Quote :

yeah, I was disappointed that DT didn't show (anyone know why?), they put on a great show when they opened for Soilwork at Ziggy's. I enjoyed their set much more than Soilwork's.

Quote :

I agree. Still Life is my favorite as well, and The Moor is probably my favorite Opeth song...I wish they'd have focused less on Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries (though the latter is forgivable as I'm sure they're still trying to promote it) and more on their older stuff, SL, MAYH, Morningrise, Orchid...Don't get me wrong, BP and GR are great albums, but I can only hear Drapery Falls so many times before I want a little more diversity. Though, I will never get tired of hearing Deliverance (while we're on overemphasized songs)

I think I know who you're talking about, but I didn't notice. When I said "if you saw the big guy up on the rail toward the left with the big afro" I actually meant to the right as you're looking at the stage, but I'm glad you knew what I meant...I got there at like 5:45 to ensure a spot on the rail, but at the end I decided to drop back and mosh

Yeah, that shit was hilarious...One of those girls though was pissing me the fuck off. I jumped into the mosh pit and was doin my thing and apparently one of those chicks didn't like getting thrown around, so the bitch comes at me flailing, all i saw was a blur of hair and arms and she made a beeline for my face, scratched at me and ripped off my glasses...I just tried to get her off me and just shoved my hand out to push her away but she was so short i accidentally grabbed her around the neck and tossed her across the floor... whoops. oh well, she shouldn't jump into the pit and expect special treatment. I'm not going to make it a point to throw a girl around in the pit, but it's a fucking mosh pit and shit happens.

Devin Townsend writes some incredible shit, but I do think it was a little weird to have them open for this show. I enjoyed their set because I knew what to expect, but they're more of a sit-down-and-chill band than an opener for a metal show. And I can't believe they played "Life," that was a pretty bad decision. But I was up front and got the tech to hand me the set list as they were preparing for Opeth, so at least I have a DTB souvenier now.

btw, I'm still a little deaf from being right in front of that right speaker stack, holy shit. I'm sure that did a little permanent damage.

ahahahah yes, in that picture I am the guy at the bottom left with all the hair and doing something funky with my hands out in front of me

that pic must have been right near the end, because I think the only time i was back that far and right was when i lost my balance in the mosh pit and kinda bowled into the crowd in that direction

you can kinda see the back of my head in the very bottom right of this picture, but you have to look real hard because my hair blends in with the shadows...top of my head is near the bottom of the guitarist's amp head

DT put me to fucking sleep. i'm serious... with the exception of the first and last songs, i felt like i listened to static (which wasn't helped by them cranking everything to eleven). i was just behind the pit, on the first railing, and i sat down and nodded in and out for their whole set.

Nah...It was when you were in the pit. In between songs or during a quiet part when everyone was just standing around. I was standing behind the pit for the most part.

those comments were linked, but not entirely...I was more pissed at the rednecks for yelling stupid shit than for moshing

I mean shit, I have been to every kind of metal show that could possibly exist and the ONLY ones that didn't involve moshing were Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius. Fuckers even moshed during Rhapsody for a little bit.

closure was fucking incredible....ax did VERY well on the drums

i'm extremely sorry that Lopez isn't doing so well, but Ax is doing a pretty good job filling in

it was kinda funny when he didnt know when to come back in during one of the interludes in Under the Weeping Moon, Akerfeldt kept nodding at him to come back in and he finally did...but I can't blame him, I can't remember where that comes back in most of the time either.

I missed all but the last 3 songs of DT band....for the first half of opeth's set, i was dead center, right behind the pit. After Deliverance ended, i got tired of sweating my balls off and moved back toward the bar area.
