Also, i know in the NFL you cant advance a fumble on fourth down or on the last play of the game. I guess this isnt a rule for college, but this just makes Ecker's decision to hold onto the ball as he went out of bounds even more asanine. Just lob the thing back over your shoulder!

the only reason they had sun belt refs was that the sun belt conference sent two teams to a bowl last year

so i think there are two sun belt crews officiating bowls this year

Then let them ref the fucking GMAC and Poinsetta bowls, not Nebraska-Michigan

God forbid they use Sun belt refs on a BCS game

now that i think about it even if they called offsetting penatlites the game cant end with that so michigan wouldve/shouldve gotten an untimed down where ecker went out of bounds

Off-setting penalties would mean a replay of the down. Not where Michigan took the ball.

Every time I have seen off-setting penalties the play is just discontinued and the down is replayed. I guess the same would apply with personal fouls.

actual call should be "Illegal participation, too many men on the field on the defense, unsportsmanlike conduct on the coaching staff for the offense, those penalties are offsetting, replay 2nd down from the previous spot"

The Sun Belt officials did an AWFUL job. Let's just go over the major mistakes in the second half:

1. Michigan forced to call a timeout to get the Nebraska touchdown catch overturned. Officials should have reviewed that on their own.
Impact: Michigan loses a timeout they needed later in the game.

2. Michigan forced to call another timeout to get the Henne "fumble" reviewed. Even though I think it should have been an incomplete pass, that's not the issue. Once again, it's not Michigan's job to call the timeout to get the play reviewed - the upstairs official needs to take care of that. Impact: Michigan loses another timeout. In addition, had the play been called an incomplete pass, Nebraska doesn't get 7 points on the resulting possession.

3. No call of pass interference against Manningham on 4th down in the end zone. Everybody was originally looking at the defender's right arm, but the left arm was pulling down on Manningham's arm.
Impact: Michigan should have retained the ball, and had 1st and goal on the 2 yard line. You think THAT might have gotten them some points???

4. Officials waiting a full 10 seconds to start the play clock before Nebraska's final punt.
Impact: Obviously, Michigan would have had an extra 10 seconds to work with. That's at least 2 plays.

5. No call of interference with the entire Nebraska team on the field during the last field.
Impact: unsure. Do you call it on one team or both? Worst case, Michigan gets another play. Best case, Michigan gets the ball on the Nebraska 7 (ball was out of bounds at the 15, plus half the distance penalty)

To recap, that's 2 extra timeouts for Michigan, an extra 10 seconds for Michigan, 7 less points for Nebraska, 4 downs from the 2 for Michigan to get a touchdown, and a blown call on the play they needed to remedy all the other bad calls.

Just an awful, AWFUL job by the Sun Belt officials. I'm not sure who you can protest an non-conference game to, but I feel like Lloyd Carr needs to do something to protest how the game turned out.

Lloyd Carr has much more patience and class than i do. probably would have lost my job for assaulting a ref after the hose job he got.

^^^you forgot how the refs sat the ball down at the end and stood there loooking at each other taking a total of 18 seconds to get the ball spotted and start the playclock.

there's class, and then there's stupidity...
class is not whining about one or two bad calls that might have cost you the game...
but in this case, filing a formal complaint against officials whose gross incompetence obviously might have cost Michigan the game would not be classless, it's simply standing up for your program

that game was FRUSTERATING. fortunately i was so wasted by the end that I didn't break anything.

Ecker ruined the end of the OSU game too, INSTEAD of getting out of bounds on a dump pass he just ran around IN BOUNDS to eat up the rest of the clock.

in both games though we shouldnt have been needing to score like that on the last play. those 3 second half turnovers KILLED us, too much good field position, and the Michigan D just couldn't hold well at all.

michigan did get shafted, but they also blew the game in similar fashion to the OSU debacle....up by two scores with a few minutes left. lost by 4...

lloyd's gonna have some answering to do in ann arbor, two seasons in a row with back to back losses to end the year.

that was a fucking awesome play. i thought they were gonna lateral it all the way back to the fucking goal line. if they had had anyone other than a tight end get the ball from the RB, the guy woulda scored. Of course, the TE should have cut back across the field when he was at the edge of the sidelines. He would have scored easily

ESPN Motion has really good video highlights of the game. Shows the three plays where Michigan was screwed (fumble/forwardpass, blatant interfence on a TD pass not called, and the big play at the end). I had no idea that literally more than half of the field was covered in Nebraska players.

From a great site, Fanblogs.com, is this story:

http://www.fanblogs.com/michigan/006315.php

Here's the relevant part:

A day after a wild, lateral-filled ending to the Alamo Bowl, David Parry, the N.C.A.A.'s national coordinator for officiating, said that the officials should have thrown flags because Michigan and Nebraska had too many players on the field as the final play unfolded.

Nevertheless, Parry said, the mistake did not affect the outcome of the game, because the penalties by each team would have offset each other, and because time had expired. Parry said that the officials should have explained to each team why the game had ended so abruptly.

...

"Simply what you had was too many men on the field by Nebraska - a whole slew of them - and Michigan had two or three extra men out there," Parry said in a telephone interview last night. "Since both teams had too many men and both teams fouled, it was an offsetting penalty, and the game was over. I think it might have been wise to throw penalty flags and to announce, to say, that it was an offsetting penalty, the game was over."

ive been thinking about this a bit...how would you change the replay rule to make it fair?

unfair disadvantages:
1. an offending (benefting) team on offense can snap the ball preventing a replay
2. an offended (disadvantaged) team has to burn timeouts to give officials another look at it

my ideas for a solution/s:
1. give the official until the end of the next play to decide to review
2. require replay officials to stop play to look at more close plays, rather than trying to make the call in the booth before buzzing the crew on the field
3. give an offended (disadvantaged) team a (1) timeout back if a call is reversed, if they take one
4. scrap replay altogether

what do you guys think?
