i've probably sang it, too, at playmakers or something, but that doesn't qualify me for this list. hell, i play 2 instruments pretty well, have decent skills on a third, and a working knowledge of a 4th, but I've never made a dollar at it.

did she seriously ever sing that song, or are you just confused about Elton John singing it at her funeral?

Falco did "Der Komissar" and the original "Rock Me Amadeus", plus other stuff you might recognize. He was German, but had those two hits over here. Died in a car accident in Austria in the (early?) 90's.

Didn't the member of the Beach Boys who drowned do it after falling off a boat? Does that count?

I don't know who these people are, or how they died (if you didn't specify):

Falco
Gram Parsons (drug overdose)
Tim Buckley (Heroin)
Roy Buchanan (suicide)
Jeff Buckley (Drowning/ Suicide?)
Nick Drake (suicide)
Ian Curtis (Joy Division) (suicide)
JACO PASTORIUS
Dottie West
Kirsty MacColl-was she an actual recording artist, or just a songwriter?

I never knew that Hank Sr was hopped up when he died. Is it pretty well established that it was caused by drugs?

I also didn't know that the dude from Marshall Tucker Band who died was Toy Caldwell's brother or that anyone from Gin Blossoms committed suicide.

Rick Nelson's sons or nephews or something have a band now...can't think of the name. saw them open for someone at Walnut Creek one time. closed their set with Garden Party.

Sam Cooke didn't die in a place crash. He got shot.

john entwistle, the who's bassist, died recently of a drug overdose.

gram parsons was a solo artist and was also in the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Byrds. He (along with people like Dylan) is basically the starting point for "country rock", "alternative country," or whatever you want to call the jayhawks, uncle tupelo, whiskeytown, drive-by truckers, steve earle, old 97s, waco brothers, gillian welch, etc etc... tremendously influential to a huge music following. he died in his twenties of a drug overdose, and i think his grave was robbed, which is kinda cool in a rock star way.

and, growing up with a dad, uncles, and grandfather that listened to country, i was always told that Hank Williams "drank himself to death"

^i didn't know that, and i also didn't know that Entwistle's death was drug related

Whiskeytown and Steve Earle are the shit, by the way.

man, the Who have had it rough...Moon and Entwistle dead from substance abuse, Townsend is deaf from Moon blowing up his kit and the crazy volumes they've played at over the years, plus he got in trouble for kiddie porn, and he fucks dudes.

It's scary to think that Roger Daltrey is the safe bet of the bunch.

although I BELIEVE that all of them are banned from Holiday Inns to this day after Moon chainsawed a wall out of their room back in the day.

dottie west was a pretty famous country music singer... circa patsy cline era

ya hank williams had serious drug (pain killers i think) and alcohol problems. in fact he missed several concerts cause he was too drunk to perform. he died in a limo after he had been injected with morphine and i believe they found a bottle of whiskey or scotch on him too.

Both. Mildly successful during the 80's college music/altnerative scene.

My bad...i meant Otis Redding (Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay)

Also, Donnie Hathaway (70's soul singer)--suicide

Michael Hutchence does not belong on this list

Elvis is debatable.

Add Michael Jackson

yeah, i probably should be.

^^ Yeah, Michael Hutchence was accidental hanging due to autoerotic asphyxiation gone wrong. I knew he died by hanging himself, but I guess I didn't know the circumstances when I made the list way back when.
