It was probably staged, just like the moon landing (cue salisbury).

It's one thing when campaigning politicians bullshit their way through questions by making it sound like they've answered a question without really doing so, but a Supreme Court nominee? Is this really standard practice now?

^Apparently it is. It's also practice now to speak for 10 minutes (Biden w/Roberts, as well as DeWine w/Alito) before asking a question. 1/13/2006 9:57:10 AM |

Alito answered more questions than Roberts or Ginsberg, the two latest SC nominees.

I think you are confusing being asked a certain number of questions with answering that number of questions. And his answer to the wiretap question from Leahy (I think it was him?) stands out in memory as a particular bad example of him not answering a question. 1/13/2006 7:18:34 PM |

Alito is going to be a great addition to the Supreme Court. If that's the best effort that the leftists can mount then no wonder they're in the minority. I mean please, get a new playbook. 1/14/2006 11:03:24 AM |

Ahh good old anti Catholic bigotry. What would the Soap Box be without it? Looks like some folks are still stuck way back in the early years of North Carolina government.
Committee vote tomorrow, Senate confirmation next Tuesday.

um, bigotry is when you don't like certain people, usually for racial reasons, etc. it could also be religious reasons. The thing is, I just don't like the catholic faith; i have no problem with catholic PEOPLE. I'd say the same is true for most others 1/24/2006 10:26:34 AM |

"I hate the african race, I don't hate black people"
Committee approved Alito today - Schumer is still moving the wind around about it (for a reason I'm sure is clear to someone?)
Insert bigotry and hate here.

^ That doesn't make much sense at all. Religion is a choice, and an organization. I can dislike SHRM for being boring and a waste of time, but I can also be best friends with a member or SHRM (except that they are all douchebags :p ).
The issue is that a "progressive" PinkandBlack is worried that a Catholic is going to allow his religion to dictate his judicial rulings, which sounds pretty goddamned ridiculous, given his record. And if you have some evidence otherwise, I think that both TWW and Ted Kennedy would like to see it. 1/24/2006 11:57:55 AM |

The only thing Ted Kennedy would like to see is the bottom of his martini glass.
In any case, you are saying that someone is not qualified to be on the bench if they are Catholic. That is directly unconstitutional, as well as bigotry in its most basic form. North Carolina got rid of that years and years and years ago. Why are you still persisting in bigotry?

not what anyone's saying. if someone has obviously used their faith as a way to judge, instead of using the constitution, they are not qualified.1/24/2006 1:02:41 PM |

Maybe their faith informs the way they look at the Constitution. Nothing wrong with that. But your side made a blanket statement - no Catholics. And that is bigotry. 1/24/2006 3:40:31 PM |

I never heard anyone say "no catholics."
I believe "some crazy hard-right catholic" was the term used. Not all catholics are crazy (after all, they're not mormons! *rimshot*, and not all are hard-right, to be sure).
In fact, I respect the catholic church alot for its stance on the death penalty and nuclear weapons

In order to be Catholic, there aer certain things you must believe. The stance on abortion is one of them. You don't get to pick and choose - you're either Catholic, which means you accept all of the teachings of the Church, or you are not. There are no "right Catholics" or "left Catholics" - there are just Catholics and non-Catholics.

Democrat Mary landrieu said today she would vote to break a filibuster if they tried it. Filibuster is now pretty much out of the question - Justice Alito will be seated by next week. 1/25/2006 9:11:25 PM |
