A sniper rifle, perhaps? I'd complain less about this type of thing if it killed only the intended target. Yes, I know that'd be harder to pull off.
Quote : | "Not that the rocket approach has been spectacularly successful either, but sending people into a multi-structure compound hasn't succeded very often, if at all." |
Sure, but it's less likely to result in death of children than the rocket method is. I think that's a fair trade-off.
Quote : | "That is appropriate." |
I could settle for that wording. I think it will be years before any U.S. official has guts to actually apologize, though. I hope I'm wrong.1/18/2006 4:18:39 PM |

I kind of doubt that this is the case. Any entry strategy to such a building/compound would involve at least some explosives or other area weapons. And even if it didn't, kids would still get killed, except now we have US military people shooting kids right up close -- harder on the soldiers and worse in the news.1/18/2006 4:20:53 PM |

The idea that a rocket attack is no more dangerous to civilians than anything else strikes me as a bit silly. The attack destroyed three houses. I'm damn sure more discriminating methods are available. Consider the example of police work inside the U.S. Not great, but killing a bunch of random folks in a single police action is extremely rare. The same standard should applied everywhere.1/19/2006 4:10:24 PM |

Yes, let's consider police work inside the United States. Let's consider Waco in particular.
In this country have the the luxury of time to just set up a perimeter around the offenders and wait them out, negotiate, etc. And even then we manage to bungle it. 1/19/2006 4:12:14 PM |
GoldenViper All American 16056 Posts user info edit post |
Yes, we screwed up big time on Waco. In general, though, cops kill fewer random people than missile strikes. Kids are consistently injured or killed when rockets are used for assassination. 1/19/2006 5:31:33 PM |

it's a moot point though, in this instance, as the pakistani (or any government) has about as much control to do any of that in that region as i do. 1/19/2006 6:16:13 PM |
GoldenViper All American 16056 Posts user info edit post |
Doesn't matter. I don't care if a missile strike was the only option in this case. It's still immoral. Doing nothing would have been better. 1/19/2006 9:57:00 PM |

We should have politely knocked on the door and waited for them to finish dinner because we all know how much respect terrorists have for the rule of law. [/sarcasm]
If we would have sent in troops to simply arrest them I'd be willing to bet that some of our soldiers would have died in the process which would just lead to more liberal bitching about military deaths, not to mention that some of these dead terrorists would have had a greater chance of surviving the whole event. 1/21/2006 7:55:08 AM |

There were several targets in the house. After the first one goes down, the rest hide and call for help. 1/22/2006 10:36:03 AM |

^ yes, let's send a sniper/spotter team into pakistan to shot about 15 people all at once, because that works. 1/22/2006 12:14:04 PM |
Wlfpk4Life All American 5613 Posts user info edit post |
^^ Or worse yet, the targets get away and our soldiers, being stuck in the Pakistan back country, are caught and killed.
That doesn't sound like a viable alternative to me. 1/22/2006 2:04:42 PM |

you guys are right
killing innocent kids is the right thing to do 1/22/2006 5:32:40 PM |

Letting terrorists go scott free so you democrats can bitch and moan about the ineffectiveness of the war on terror should have been the most important thing.
Some of you just want to bitch for the sake of bitching. Nobody wants to see women or children die, but if the only way to kill these SOBs was to bomb the house then sadly that just had to be the case. And since the shot was fired from a drone, how were we to know that there were women and children present in the house to begin with, especially considering the some of the masterminds who are the leading advocates of terror were easy targets? 1/22/2006 5:48:23 PM |

Killing innocent kids is not the right thing to do. But it may -- pending more information about what targets were present -- have been a necessary thing to do.
Now you'll start about the "moral high ground," and I'll remind you that we at least make an effort not to kill kids, which is more than I can say for our opponents in this particular conflict. 1/22/2006 6:17:15 PM |

you know
we probably should kill the kids
since we're making it so easy to recruit and train people willing to die to hurt us and our intrests we might as well cut the middle man out 1/22/2006 7:36:42 PM |

I don't consider that a good trade-off.

Uh, maybe we should figure out who the fuck is at the target location before we fire missiles? If that requires using something other than drones then so be it.
Besides, everyone knows such missile attacks consistently kill random people. When you level three houses you can be pretty damn sure you'll cause some "collateral damage."1/23/2006 4:49:53 PM |
