OH WAIT. You just attack a country and destroy it!!!!!!11111. Almost forgot...? But that's civilized... right?
OH WAIT. Bush and his cronies are not religious extremist nutjobs? If the people in power are nutjobs, forget what the common people are... that's inconsequential.
I know this will happen, so I will say it now. I am not defending any side, least of all the crazy Muslims burning down shit. That's inexcusable. Both sides are bad, they just have different modi operandi.

None. They only called for the destruction of Iran, along with several Western governments.
Also, see rest of post above.

Yeah, the US goes to war when dictators use nerve gas on hundreds of thousands of people and when they *think* someone might try to pull the nerve gas out on them. Meanwhile the islam community declares jihad after someone draws a cartoon, spills milk, drops hat, etc.
I'm not justifying our actions in Iraq BTW. I hate the "preemptive strike" philosophy. I'd rather give them a chance and if they do strike then no one in the world would have a problem with any type of retaliation. Where would the "preemptive strike" philosophy have gotten us during the cold war?2/10/2006 10:09:28 AM |

The big difference is that Iran is specifically running the contest in order to provoke others. It's not proving anything except that they're oversensitive to those criticizing their religion. Sure, I might be offended if the cartoons were negatively depicting Jesus, but it's their own thing. I know it's going to happen b/c religion is a sensitive topic. I'm not going to actively protest except perhaps by boycotting the publication and whatever else supported the cartoons' messages. And I certainly wouldn't set buildings on fire.
Those people that resort to violence and hatred in response to something like this are dangerously unbalanced. 2/10/2006 10:36:30 PM |

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iranians love Danish pastries, but when they look for the flaky dessert at the bakery they now have to ask for "Roses of the Prophet Muhammad."
Bakeries across the capital were covering up their ads for Danish pastries Thursday after the confectioners' union ordered the name change in retaliation for caricatures of the Muslim prophet published in a Danish newspaper.
"Given the insults by Danish newspapers against the prophet, as of now the name of Danish pastries will give way to 'Rose of Muhammad' pastries," the union said in its order.
"This is a punishment for those who started misusing freedom of expression to insult the sanctities of Islam," said Ahmad Mahmoudi, a cake shop owner in northern Tehran.

no they wouldn't. 1) you can't satisfy radical islamists. 2) radical islam is popular because of oppressive regimes who keep their people in poverty without work and blame it on the west and israel. if israel was gone the west would still get blamed. 2/17/2006 6:00:34 AM |

^ But he doesn't seem to understand the difference, how can that be the case?

Who has called for the destruction of Iran? I heard Pat Robertson suggest regime change, among others, but that is a far cry from destroying a country and genociding the population, as is regularly called for in Israel. The guy earlier in this thread that you were responding to was using a metaphore for the act of regime change, he wasn't actually calling for the genocide of all Iranians. If all the Islamists wanted was regime change in Israel then why didn't they cheer victory and go home any of the 10 times Israel's regime was changed?
