Queti:

Holland america is a good line, but it depends on what you are looking for. The service you get is excellent, as is the food. They are generally full of older folks though, and the ships aren't huge, which I guess is why you get more personalized service. Its a good slow relaxing trip, which could be what you want.

I would high discourage taking a Norwegian cruise. We went out of one from Charleston since we lived right there, and were sorely dissappointed in it. Bad service, long waits for dinner (freestyle cruising my ass), bad food (cheap asses made you pay for lobster!).

^wow. glad we didn't take it then! i think we will stick with princess and celebrity. royal carib was fine. but i prefer the other two. been thoroughly pleased with the food, service, entertainment, etc. plus we get discounts

funny thing is the celebrity cruise we were on was like 10 nights. and FULL of old people. we later learned as the cruise gets longer, the age of the people exponentially gets older. i think due to vacation days/kids/income/etc. we called ours the "bingo boat". but honestly it was awesome. we had no problems with people running around drunk at 4am (we were there to see new places and relax, not party). all the people were super nice and laid back. wonderful time. i'd actually do the same cruise again.

Having lived next to a tourist port city, I can give you my perspective. I used to go over to phillipsburg some days when i'd see a ship pulling in during my morning workouts.

1) Don't buy anything. ALL the shit you find on the streets, in the markets, even in the stores is marked up 100-200%. If you want a t-shirt or something, walk a couple of blocks off the main streets and find a local store. Same shirt will be 3-5 bucks.

2) Like someone else said, don't use the taxis or private transports. Don't rent cars from people at the port. Either rent ahead of time from a reputable company, or take the public busses/vans.

3) Don't try to act like you know what you are doing, like you know the place or like you fit in. You will stick out like a sore thumb, so go with it.

Congrats Jackleg! Hell I've never even been on a cruise, so drink a few for me

I just got back to Raleigh after 7 days on the Radience of the Seas... I had a great time... I enjoyed the boat mostly, but if I had to pick a favorite place we stopped, then Cozumel... You can really bargain with those guys... Get all the weed you want in Jamaica... Those guys are everywhere... "Want some bob?... You need some bob?" Labadee was just "ok" for me... Grand Caymen was also just "ok." Jamaica in the village had the Bob Marley (and Reggae music in general) Museum which was 7 bucks, but if you're into that kind of thing, then it's worth it... I thought so atleast...

Here's a tip on saving money on drinks...

I got this tip from someone sitting at my dinner table who's cruised many times... Find one bartender and hook him up big time on the first couple of days... and then they'll hook you up the rest of the trip... I hooked up this bartender on Day 2 with like a 10 dollar tip, and I didn't pay for another drink for the rest of the time on the boat... After talking with other passengers, I just got really lucky with choosing a bartender, but I'm sure there's a lot of truth to the theory with all the bartenders... I gave him a 50 dollar tip at the end of the cruise which was nothing compared to the ~200 bucks I had in drinks...

voyager is an amazing ship

the entertainment director is hilarious and hot
i think we did too many excurions but being our first cruise we didnt know what to do and just winged it
didnt understand the whole buying things off the boat deal

haggling with the locals was a blast in Nassau, but Labadee sucked, they were really aggressive and I didnt even want to look at anything else after a point
we went parasailing and it was well worth the money, the hour you spend on the boat is thrilling, good pics of the ship too

the service was excellent, the best ive ever seen, RC treats their employees well i guess.

casino is small, i only played 20 bucks and left it at that. thing is the drinks are like 4-6 bucks and HUUUUUUGE so well worth the money. youll see the typical old people drooling in front of the screens because theyve been there since 6am.

take lots of pictures it really is a trip youll remember for the rest of your life.

Me and Karen went on the same boat.
its beautiful! and huge!
there will always be tons of stuff to do and it will also be very relaxing at the same time!
i loved it and had a great time with karen!
the one thing we didnt know about was how expensive the excursions were!
so we had booked a lot before the cruise
another thing about labadee is they just bought a 45 foot high waterslide!
its awesome!
well worth the $20 to have unlimited rides all day!
that was one of the coolest things i think!
have fun on that cruise!

^^when you say the "casino is small" - I guess you're comparing that to a hotel in Atlantic City or something - seeing you've never been on a cruise ship?

just got back from a cruise that went to Cozumel. That place got destroyed during hurricane season last year. There are only a few resorts still open, and it's obvious they're owned by Americans. Our ship couldn't even dock there b/c the pier was destroyed.

I've been on like 7 cruises and in every case but one I enjoyed the boat just as much as the islands. Hang out at the bars and casinos on the ship and you'll have a blast.
(the one exception was a cruise of Greece and Turkey, which kicks the hell outta bahamas anyway)

If you're serious about "sneaking" liqour in...don't put it in a water bottle...they've seen that a hundred times (and I have seen people get caught...I went with a bunch of friends in high school a long time ago and some of them got caught). IF you can't find a large colored container (like a huge empty shampoo/conditioner/etc. shampoo)....use a mouthwash bottle or something. In reality...it depends on how cheap you are and how messed up you want to get.

god damn people. you sneak in alcohol (clear liquors) in rubbing alcohol bottles.

i mean what the fuck right.

just pour out the rubbing alcohol, wash it a bit. and pour the liquor in there. so they open it and smell it and smell alcohol..OH NOO
