Fresh was good.
Primer is good as well, may have to watch it a few times though, it will make much more sense on a second viewing

I'll second magnolia (one of my favorite movies) and add The Thin Red Line
Neither of those are nec. lesser known movies but American Beauty and Saving Private Ryan came out at the same time respectively, which kinda of pushed these movies under the radar

and Tape with ethan hawke and Uma thurman. The entire film was shot in 1 room and there are only 3 actors.

Speaking of 2046; Kar Wai Wong's films are great. I would recommend Chung-King Express.

"The Way of the Gun"

it's slow in parts, but has some of the coolest (and loudest) gunplay i've ever seen in a movie

The Conversation

old and also slow in parts, but has Harrison Ford and Gene Hackman. Hackman pretty much reprises the same role several years later in Enemy of the State.

"there's an old Lawrence Fisburne movie called 'Always Outnumbered'"

the book that the movie is based on is excellent, full title is "Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned". i highly recommend it.

the author is Walter Mosley. he is also the author of "Devil in a Blue Dress" which was also made into an excellent movie starring denzel washington and don cheadle. i highly recommend you see it as well.

i'll second "saints and soldiers" as well. i loved it.

check out some spike lee joints...notably "do the right thing".

it was huge when it first came out, not so publicly known in our generation but still very good...the movie i'm talking about is "Mean Streets" (harvey keitel, de niro, dir by scorsese), a semi-autobiography of martin scorsese and a damn good film too.

if you saw "goodnight and goodluck" and was interested in the blacklist era that the film took place during, i strongly suggest you check out "Guilty by Suspicion" starring Robert De Niro.

if you like westerns i recommend "High Noon" (gary cooper and grace kelly) and "Once Upon A Time in the West" (henry fonda, charles bronson, claudia cardinale, dir by sergio leone).

*boiler room fucking sucked, but you redeemed yourself with "malena" on the page before.

ill second that it wasnt very good. maybe worth a watch, but i doubt it.

i wasnt overly impressed with magnolia, i liked it but it really was too long (if you're going to make a 3 hr movie, it's gonna have to do more).

this is a sentence i always feel like i should regret

but for me, the second half of the tom cruise arc is the best part of magnolia

(not that overrated "TAME THE CUNT" part)

I'm not all hot for Magnolia like I used to be, but it's a three hour movie with things happening nonstop. I'm not sure what you mean by "do more", but I think it carries an incredible emotional weight along with an interesting intersecting plot that is constantly in motion. It IS kind of a ripoff of Short Cuts, but they're both good movies.

you are mistaken on many levels

1. i never mentioned Boiler Room; someone else did

2. it doesn't suck, its awesome. if you don't know, you just don't know

3. i said "haha", because i've seen it so many times, its not "lesser-known"

Blow Up
Battle Royal
Just Looking
Run Ronnie Run
To Live (from the same director who did House of Flying Daggers)
Grave of the Fireflies (animated)

a lot of people love James Dean in East of Eden and Rebel w/o a Cause, but they always forget his best movie (imo): Giant

ah i see how i got you confused.

but i still stick by what i said about boiler room. i was completely unimpressed by any aspect of that movie. and yes its definitely not "lesser-known".

i thought of another.

if you liked "ghost dog", "coffee and cigarettes", and "broken flowers", check out "down by law" also by jim jarmusch. good solid sentimental movie with some really funny parts. features tom waits and roberto benini and the other guy thats in several other jarmusch movies.

Last Life in the Universe
I really dont know why i like it but its the most laid back movie ever. The fact that Christopher Doyle does the cinematography is just an added bonus.

Barry Lyndon
Why doesnt this movie get enough love. I love how the movie's depection of framing barry's life within "portraits" symbolizes his fate.

spooky, i wasnt saying there wasnt much actually going on...it jsut kinda failed to keep my interest after a while. that struck me as weird cuz i like those kind of movies. so we can chalk it up to me being in a bad mood or the movie lacking something. i went with the latter.

It only grossed $43 million domestically. That's, like, fifteen people that saw it nation wide.

if you liked oldboy, be sure to check out sympathy for mr. vengeance. it isn't quite as good, but was still a great movie.

i'd also recommend these Asian movies available in the US:
The neighbor no. 13
301/302
The Returner
2009 Lost memories

Two very highly regarded directors and their best movies and you think that qualifies as lesser known?

IDK how lesser known these are to everyone else, but Sniper with Tom Berenger is an awesome movie (imo), and also A Clockwork Orange, but then again I think a lot of people may have heard of this but never seen it due to its "lewd" content, i jes think its awesome...

Hopefully i dont get bashed because these arent really lesser-known

To clarify about Ciudad de Dios:

Brazilian

I was thinking Brazilian, and I wrote Argentina. Whoops

But a good movie, nonetheless.

That movie is strangely hilarious. I used to work at Blockbuster, and I only rented the movie because in its hisory in the store it had been rented twice. The movie was a funny surprise.

this is a college message board, populated by college students of the 18-20whatever range.

go to the brickyard and take a poll of how many students have seen those three films.

i guarantee you that the average college student hasn't even heard of most of those. sure they might know who spike lee is but they probably haven't taken the time to watch any of his movies (like myself until just recently, though i am speaking from a white male perspective).

i'm listing classic movies that most of my peers haven't been exposed to that i think they should see...lesser known to OUR generation.

I saw years ago on IMDB as a recommendation for those that enjoyed Office Space. I finally managed to get a hold of it the other night at Blockbuster. My friend and I really enjoyed it. She's gonna end up in the coporate world, so I think she appreciates the humor of the two a bit more, but still it had a lot of great laughs. It wasn't just another office-type movie because the guy is originally a temp.
