sounds to me like you are one awfully picky mofo.

you should take Perlith's advice

Quote :
"Unless you have a heavily padded resume and some $texas to float on ... don't be overly picky with where you first job offer is. If you stick with the company, you'll have options on switching divisions/areas of the country to work. If you don't stick with the company, you have X years of experience and a bit more flexibility.

-A place that's growing, with opportunities to find a good job (RTP)
-The cost of living is low, where I can spend $600 a month on a place to live, rather than $1200/mo.

These are contradictory. Places with jobs tend to drive up the cost of living, and that is always going to hurt newcomers the most because they are often buying their first home.

And the homes in boomtowns are usually cheap cookie-cutter deals with vinyl siding, low ceilings, and carpet.

Not so contradictory.

Dude, you have no idea how bad the traffic gets here. I work in RTP and I arrange my working hours from 7 am to 3 pm to avoid that damned traffic. Go in at 8 am or leave at 5 pm, I guarantee you you'll get stuck.

last semester i worked until 4 going from RTP to my house behind hillsborough. This semester I'm working until 5 and there is a difference in traffic. It takes me about 10 minutes longer. It sucks getting bumper to bumper, but traffic here is not bad at all. Any other city is much worse.

It just depends where you live/where you are going...

I-40 corridor is worse then places even in New York City. Granted there are far MORE areas in NYC that are much worse but if you take one way every day you wouldn't know it...

I lived in Greensboro from age 3 to age 18. It was a good place to grow up. Probably a good place to raise a family. That having been said, I have absolutely no desire to move back there--doesn't have much to offer someone in the college-to-early 30's age range that I can tell.

Ok, I didn't read everything but when I was visiting Columbus, OH this past summer the surrounding area was just like Raleigh/Cary. The only reason I wouldn't consider living there and working for a big apparel company... look how dern far it is from the beeeeeeeeeeeach!!

But yeah, the burbs around it are nice

i'll plug my own town (madison)

the climate is unappealing to most

comparable to raleigh in the sense that it is a capital, home to a major university, major hotbed for technology firms

conistently pops up on top 10 lists (top 10 places to live, top 10 places to do business, top 10 most liberal cities, top 10 greenest cities, biggest biking city in america, etc, etc) such as http://www.forbes.com/2004/05/05/04bestplacesland.html

better than raleigh in so many ways its not even funny...and you get to laugh at the people, who once you get past the accent are phenomenal

Doesn't WI have the highest percentage of obese people in the nation.

I don't think I want to be around that.

I'd be in prison within weeks.

I'm gonna bit the bullet and plug Chapel Hill

Pros:
Better traffic going to/from RTP (in most cases)
Night life on par with Raleigh - Franklin > Hillborough/Glenwood/etc
City is growing, so buying property is a great investment
Great schools - K->12 and Colleges (duke/unc)
Close to Raleigh/Durham/Greensboro

Cons:
Cost of housing is high (most decent 3-4br houses in CH are in the 300k+ range)
Small compared to most cities

When my wife lived in chapel hill last year, i stayed over a lot and commuted to work in the mornings, and I'd argue that traffic is WORSE from CH to RTP than from Raleigh to RTP.

Also, for whatever reason, the human waste that lives in chapel hill (no offense to any state alumni living there) all like to drive 5-10mph UNDER the speed limit.

that might be true, i'm not sure

but madison is consistently mentioned as one of the most in shape cities as well!

Quote :
"In 2004 Madison was named the healthiest city in America by Men's Journal magazine. Many major streets in Madison have designated bike lanes and the city has one of the most extensive bike trail systems in the nation. Due to this, Madison has a very active cyclist culture and it is common place to see groups of friends bicycling together throughout the city on nice days. Bicycle tourism is an $800 million industry in Wisconsin, which has 20 percent of the nation's bicycling industry manufacturing capacity. [18]"

Close to the Big Outdoors

Madison, Wisconsin. Resting on the shores of four scenic lakes, this Midwest town offers many parks and recreational opportunities. You can find cultural and educational amenities as well, including performing arts groups and theater companies. Noted for its large medical complexes, Madison offers excellent health care. Housing costs are moderate, but property taxes can be high. Projected job growth is very good.

Several outdoor recreation destinations are nearby Madison, offering hiking, canoeing, backpacking, fishing, swimming, and skiing. Very low temperatures and long winters might not be attractive to those who love the warm sun. January temps average 8.2 degrees F. On the other hand, those low temps mean that winter outdoor activities, such as skiing, ice skating, and snowshoeing are available many more days of the year."

Since everyone is plugging their town, I guess I'll plug mine.

Charleston, SC:

I know you ruled out SC (I'd like to know the reasons, so I could rebut them with Charleston). But Charleston is just a beautiful city. The cost of living is probably mediocre. If you look hard you can find a cheap place to live downtown or at one of the beaches. But, it's generally cheaper in areas outside of downtown like James Island, Mt. Pleasant, and West Ashley. Those places are nice themselves and only a 5-10 minute ride to downtown.

What exactly are you looking for a job in?? The medical and legal fields are huge down here. Everything else is pretty decent. It's 15 minutes away from three beaches (Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island, and Folley Beach). Each beach is a little different. Downtown is amazing...good 'ol southern historic city. Shops everywhere, great restaurants everywhere, and an extremely diverse and great nightlife. Laid back bars, tourist bars, clubs, dive bars, good bands playing on almost every night at several place.

I love Charleston. It's like a much bigger Wilmington with better traffic.

FUNNY coming from someone in Southern California.

Quote :
"You know nothing yet! Raleigh traffic is fucking horrible. We're rated like the 4th worst in the country under NY, LA, and DC. I lived in Kansas City for a year and there was virtually NO traffic. And the city is like 5x bigger than raleigh."

You're crazy. Try driving through Houston, any time of the day, and you're stuck. Driving from Auburn Hills to downtown Detroit = nightmare. Even Louisville, KY makes Raleigh traffic look nonexistent. At least they planned for growth in Raleigh.

I feel the need to bitch about traffic again.
Seeing as it took me *ahem* TWO HOURS to go ten miles today.
Never. Ever. Move to Honolulu.
Traffic was moving so slowly that my husband and best friend got out of the car, went to Taco Bell (while I was still sitting in traffic), ordered food to go, and got back to the car. I had moved two blocks in that time.

You should check out Phoenix. Great weather, awesome nightlife, hot chicks, all of the major sports leauges (insert Arizona Cardinal joke here), major university nearby in tempe. Not right on the coast but only about a 5 or 6 hour drive to LA and San Diego. Probably a little less than that up to Las Vegas, which by the way is where I myself would like to move.

No, actually the traffic was because there were some cones blocking off part of a lane.

We aren't getting washed away. We're getting rain. We get rain every day somewhere on the island. Not that the people here can drive when it's not raining. It's just a thousand times worse when there's a speck of water falling from the sky.
