"a lot of people" would be limited to Barry Bonds, Jay Cutler, Ronnie Coleman, a handful of NFL O-linemen, and a couple of olympic athletes that all employed the services BALCO labs. Victor Conte has always had an oustanding reputation among pro athletes, so I doubt this was something he would lie about. Besides, it's not like he just gave out names. The DEA asked him simple yes and no questions about billing receipts and email conversations with the individuals in question.

Victor Conte is hardly fucked. They have a money laundering charge against him for $100 cash he pocketed after a transaction. All of the THG he produced was legal since the DEA never knew it existed. The only reason they are keeping the charge against him is for leverage to keep him from running a slander campaign. The charge will be dropped within the year.

my double standard is that Mark McGwire lied about his steroid use by claiming some bullshit prohormone was the cause of his success, while Bonds at least had the decency to just flat out deny usage if he wasn't comfortable with admitting it. Bonds is respectable for that, and Conseco is respectable for openly admitting his steroid use. What McGwire did is about as shitty as most supplement companies publishing before and after pictures of juicers and claiming their product line did that.
