"Former UCLA coach Steve Lavin has withdrawn from the N.C. State coaching search, which now appears focused entirely on West Virginia coach John Beilein.

A source close to Beilein said at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday that the coach remained in discussions with officials at both NCSU and West Virginia. A likely topic of conversation is Beilein's buyout with the Mountaineers, which amounts to about $3 million."

"John Beilein
Head Coach

A new era in West Virginia men’s basketball began on April 18, 2002, as the Mountaineers introduced John Beilein as their 20th head basketball coach. A proven winner throughout his career, Beilein (pronounced bee-line) has won 502 career games and ranks 22nd in victories among active Division I head coaches.

Beilein, a 1975 Wheeling Jesuit graduate who previously served as head coach at Richmond, replaced retired coach Gale Catlett.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to coach at West Virginia University,” said Beilein, at his introductory press conference. “This is something I’ve strived for since I was a high school coach in 1975.

“With a lot of patience, understanding and hard work, I hope to bring West Virginia men’s basketball to the top of the BIG EAST conference. If you can compete at the top of the BIG EAST, then you will be known as one of the top teams in the nation.”

The 2005-06 season marks Beilein’s 28th year as a collegiate coach. He has a career record of 502-298 (.625), compiled winning records in 24 of 27 years, including 11 of the past 12, and has made eight postseason appearances in his 13 years at the helm of a college Division I basketball program.

Beilein has crafted his trade at virtually every level -- community college, NAIA, Division II and now in his 14th year as a Division I coach. What sets him apart from his peers is that at every stop, he’s always been a head coach, never an assistant.

He has moved into 94th place among the NCAA all-time winningest coaches (four-year schools only).

“John Beilein is a man of integrity, education and experience,” said WVU president David C. Hardesty Jr. “He is highly competitive and successful in any venue.

“He is well-round, pragmatic and focused. He is a man of impeccable character. When you couple this with his impressive credentials, he is the right coach for our players.”

This past year, Beilein led the Mountaineers to wins over a school-record eight ranked teams (Texas Tech, Wake Forest, BC, Villanova, Pitt twice, North Carolina State and George Washington) and an AP Top 25 ranking. Beilein has already won more games against nationally ranked teams in a shorter time than any other coach in school history. West Virginia finished the 2004-05 postseason ranked No. 12 in the USA Today/ESPN poll.

Beilein led the Mountaineers to an unbelievable run in the BIG EAST championship, advancing to the finals by winning three games. The Mountaineers became just the third BIG EAST team to reach the finals without a bye.

Then in the NCAA tournament, the Mountaineers earned a No. 7 seed and reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 1959. The Mountaineers reeled off wins against No. 10-seed Creighton, No. 2-seed Wake Forest and No. 6-seed Texas Tech. West Virginia just missed reaching the Final Four, falling to No. 4-seed Louisville in overtime.

The Mountaineers finished the 2004-05 season with a 24-11 mark. After the season, Beilein received the Furfari Award as the state’s College Coach of the Year, chosen by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

In March of 2005, Beilein signed a contract extension with West Virginia through the 2011-12 season.

In 2003-04, the Mountaineers took a major step forward by winning two games in the NIT. The success in the NIT was the culmination of a season that brought progress and many good things. Accomplishments such as D’or Fischer shattering WVU’s block shot records, Patrick Beilein tying the WVU consecutive free throws made mark of 32 in a row, Johannes Herber earning a 4.0 GPA on his way to Academic All-American honors and defeating NCAA tournament teams in Maryland, Boston College and Seton Hall.

In his first season at West Virginia, Beilein led the Mountaineers to 14 wins with just seven players on scholarship. West Virginia posted impressive wins over No. 8 Florida, Tennessee, Miami, at Villanova and at Rutgers. The Mountaineers made the BIG EAST Tournament after not qualifying in 2002.

At Richmond, Beilein compiled a 100-53 (.654) record in his five seasons with the Spiders, making him the second winningest coach in terms of percentage in the school's basketball history, and reached the century plateau faster than any coach in Richmond history.

In 2001-02, Richmond finished with a 22-14 record in its first season in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Spiders reached the finals of the conference championship and won three games in the NIT before falling to Syracuse in the quarterfinals. Richmond was second in the nation in fewest turnovers per game (10.3).

In 2000-01, Beilein led Richmond to a 22-7 mark, captured the regular season crown in the Colonial Athletic Association and advanced to postseason play in the NIT. The Spiders hosted an opening round NIT contest and defeated West Virginia 79-56 before losing in the second round at Dayton.

That season, Richmond boasted the 10th best scoring defense in the country, holding its opponents to 60.8 points per contest. The Spiders were fourth in the nation in fewest turnovers per game (10.9).

In his first year at Richmond, Beilein orchestrated one of the most memorable campaigns in program history, leading the Spiders to a 23-win season, a CAA title and an NCAA tournament appearance. The Spiders grabbed national headlines that season by edging South Carolina, 62-61, in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Beilein followed his first year with a 15-12 overall record in 1998-99. Despite losing 81 percent of the team's scoring and 86 percent of its rebounding from the previous season's NCAA tournament team, Beilein continued to establish Richmond as one of the nation's rising programs.

Success has followed Beilein at nearly every coaching stop. He has compiled 24 winning seasons and put together 12 20-win campaigns. Beilein is the only person in the collegiate coaching ranks currently to record a 20-win season at four different levels -- junior college, NAIA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division I.

“John Beilein has been highly successful at every school he has coached and has had outstanding graduation rates at each stop,” said WVU athletic director Ed Pastilong at Beilein=s introductory press conference. “We’re confident that he will continue to be successful at WVU.”

Prior to arriving at Richmond, Beilein spent five years as the head coach at Canisius. During his tenure with the Golden Griffins, Beilein led the team to three consecutive postseason appearances, including the 1996 NCAA tournament. His exploits in rebuilding the Canisius program earned him Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors as well as New York State Division I Coach of the Year accolades.

Before assuming the coaching responsibilities at Canisius, Beilein turned a once-dismal LeMoyne squad into a Division II contender. In 1987-88, LeMoyne won a school-record 24 games, was crowned Mideast conference champions and earned a berth in the Division II tournament.

Beilein served a one-year stint at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y., from 1982-83, leading the program to a 20-6 record. He accepted his first collegiate head coaching position, in 1978, at Erie Community College in Buffalo, N.Y., posting a 75-43 record in four years.

Beilein began his coaching career at Newfane Central High in Newfane, N.Y., for three years before heading to Erie CC.

Beilein played college basketball at Wheeling College (now Wheeling Jesuit University) from 1971-75 and served as team captain his junior season. He received a bachelor's degree in history from there in 1975 and earned a master's degree in education from Niagara in 1981.

In May of 2005, Beilein served as Wheeling Jesuit’s commencement speaker while earning an honorary degree at the school’s 47th commencement ceremonies.

Off the court, Beilein and his wife, Kathleen, are serving as chairpersons for the 2005-06 West Virginia University United Way campaign. He is also active in the Coaches vs. Cancer campaign.

A native of Burt, N.Y., he and his wife, Kathleen, have been married for 27 years. They have one daughter Seana (25), an elementary school teacher in Richmond Va., and three sons, Patrick (22), a member of the Mountaineer team, Mark (21), who attends the University of Dayton and Andrew (15), a 10th grade student at University High School.

i know it's probably dumb to believe anything at this point, but of all the candidates we've pursued, Beilein seems like the only one who'd take the job

a hunch tells me he's gonna be the new coach

well besides that, it just seems like he's the only coach that would be leaving for a better program

WVU has no basketball tradition. I think NC State and the ACC would be a lot more fun and rewarding to be a part of than a program that, at best, will be a middle of the field contender in the Big East

The latest article from PackPride indicates that the buyout is too high, but who knows what the real deal is at this time.

If we can put up 5 million to give Barnes a bonus we can put up 3 million for Beilein, and we won't pay him 2 million a year.

^^^i'm not so sure i would believe that just yet.

the buyout is indeed hefty, but i think we could get around it if beilein paid half of it like the rumors suggest. i wouldn't put this to rest just yet.

i think it is a little more complicated than that, but even if it isn't is Beilein worth a 3 MILLION DOLLAR buyout? i don't think so

i said this a week or so ago, we should now just get a mid-major guy from a smaller school and hope he turns into something great (most of the great coaches in America today were plucked from smaller schools somewhere). Think about it like this, if we can go after these "big" name coaches b/c they are not viewed as completely secure at their institutions, are they really that great anyway? (other than Barnes, b/c of the local ties)

We have that kind of money to throw at Barnes. We offered ~2M a year, so why can't we offer JB 1M a year & then we have paid for the buyout in 3 year. It's not like the WPC doesn't have the cash resources to front the money.

exactly, I can see it now. If Whitt doesn't pan out here, people will start calling for his head, cursing his name when images of him in the 83 game are shown therefore tarnishing his legacy.

calm down about the fox article. ONE source said the deal wasn't going to happen. ONE.

Quote :
"The speculation continues to swirl that West Virginia coach John Beilein is headed to N.C. State, but sources close to the situation maintain this deal may not get done because of Beilein's hefty $3 million buyout.
In fact, one source said that Beilein and N.C. State won't happen.

"The buyout is incredible," the source said. "I think he wanted to do it, but couldn't."

Another source said that there's a chance that the two sides could still work out the financial terms."
