Page two of this thread and not one link to any sort of research. I'd contribute, but know nothing of sociology/where to begin looking.

Try moving to a Southern town that you don't know anyone in and tell me how nice and un-clicky you think people are.

Just because they will wave to you as you drive by doesn't mean they want to talk to you.

People are not different because of their geographical locations, you have a-holes everywhere. Southerners just often hide the fact behind a smile and a wave.

it still just depends on the person. I moved from upstate NY to a rural area between Sanford and Fayetteville. My parents went to the local bank to open an account an the woman they talked to was very friendly and invited us to come to her church and did everythign in her power to help us get settled into the area. We started attending that church and the majority of the people were very friendly and welcomed us. But there were also a few uptight dicks that didn't want anything to do with us "yankees".

From my general experiences everywhere it is mostly a generational difference. Older people are generally friendly and polite. But younger people are the often quite rude and mean to other people. You could say that that is just because they are young and will grow out of that and some do, but I see more and more people in the 30 - 40 year range that are still way. I can't really see them changing once they get that old.

If someone is seriously interested in researching this you might try looking up "decline of social capital." Maybe the generalization persists because people think the South = Mayberry.

Thanks for flamebaiting, McDanger. Anyway, yea, the Civil War lingers in southerners' minds because you tend to get hung up on the fights you lose. All this shit came from way out in left field. Anyway...

My thoughts are just as "baseless" as anyone else's since I've hardly traveled anywhere really far away other than Disney World and NYC, and since I didn't get pistol-whipped by Mickey, all I can do is shrug. I just think if you're looking for rude Yankees, you'll find them. But you tend to forget about someone from here being a southern asshole and instead, they're just an asshole. When you come across something that confirms your thinking, you can't hardly wait to scream "A-ha!" but you forget everything else that's contradictory.

My fiance's family thought I was extremely rude for not calling family members "ma'am" and "sir" when we first met. There was a lot of talk behind my back about how I come from a different culture and thus did not have good manners. I am from South Florida, and even though it's technically in the "south", no one talks like that down there. I never thought my behavior was rude because I seriously thought only characters in Mayberry said things like "ma'am" and "sir".

I grew up in Mt Airy NC (aka mayberry) with ma'ams & sirs, but gave it up when I came to Raleigh for the most part. Feels kind of out of place to do it here with professors and the like. Although I don't think it would be unacceptable considers there is significant number of country people here ma'aming & siring ppl.

In my experience there are good people and bad people everywhere. A southern might have different social expectations so they have more trouble recognizing the good people from the north (and the reverse would be true of northerners considering ppl from the south)... but just b/c you have trouble recognizing there are just as many good people in other areas doesn't mean they aren't there.

I grew up in Raleigh, and my parents tried to get me to do my ma'ams and sirs, but it didn't work, even when they tried to pay me a nickle every time I said it

with that said, everyone was really nice after we got past boston.

i never got any outright insults, to my face anyway, i've been as far west as montana/wyoming and arizona, and as far north as maine. all in all, every one was pretty nice, they talked with me about were i was from, but none were assholes or anything.

one lady in a store in upstate new york couldn't understand what i was asking for one time, she seemed peeved, but i was just asking for a spoon. not sure how she didn't understand me.

“southerners don't invade the north like the damn yankees invade the south. If its so great above the mason dixon, and everything is so shitty down here, save us both the trouble and don't move here.”

This statement could just as easily be recast as southerners don’t get out much or aren’t comfortable with different environments but I think the main point is that there are good and bad people in both places.

ive lived all over the entire goddamn country and Raleigh was the ONLY place people ever talked about the north vs. the south

the only reason they "invade" the south is cuz they have a higher standard of living up there and want to retire somewhere warm, where the money will last. it has nothing to do with any of the goons that live here.
