Lance Armstrong is not the best in cycling, ever

Yes, he ended his career with an unprecedented seventh consecutive victory in the Tour de France. He brought the sport of cycling into light of the general public, but anybody that knows anything about cycling would never make such a claim.

He is the best of his generation, but we shouldn't compare him to other eras.

Armstrong has proved that he has been the greatest rider in the Tour, but that was the only race he really competed in to win.

tennis: rod laver. won the grand slam on two separate occasions ('62 and '69). he may have won more, but was not allowed to play in grand slams between 1963 and 1968 because he had turned pro. After the beginning of the open era in 1968, pros were able to compete in grand slams, and he won all four grand slams the following year.

you've gotta be kidding with the john mcenroe pick. mcenroe is one of my FAVORITE tennis players of all time, but there's no real way to argue he is the best of all time.

also, i could see steffi graf being argued as one of the best tennis players of all time as well. she won 22 grand slam titles. that's nothing to sneeze at.

When you look at the guys McEnroe had to play against and the things that were going on in his life because of how fucked up his head was against what he still managed to accomplish...yeah, I'd say he was the greatest of all time.

If someone had set him down and straightened him out, there's no telling what he could have done.

Steffi is an interesting pick, but women's tennis was in a serious lull for a majority of that time. If only the little stabby-stabby had never happened, we would have been treated to some epic women's tennis.

no doubt mcenroe was a beast. but i think laver has him beat in all conceivable categories. plus: mcenroe never won the french or australian open. one can hardly be considered the best of all time if they've never even won all the grand slams.

i think it's unfair to argue that his competition wasn't the same. surely we know more of the names from the 80s. and he did have to play against borg and connors. i would argue that borg might be the best of all time before i would argue for mcenroe.

Its all about what you think makes the player the best... I happen to think defense and speed/base-running are factors. Let me put it htis way, I think Mays is the perfect baseball player. You don't have to have the gaudiest numbers to be the best... see Jim Brown.

I love seeing footage of him... the most dominant athlete in his sport/competitive event. I just thought this was regulated to tradtional/team-based sports. Oh and golf is not a sport people... if there is no defense, its not a sport.

It's because of baseball's fantastic history as a sport (at least in America). The game has been played, essentially the same, adding some black people in the 50s, a livelier ball in the 70s, a wild-card slot in the 90s, some roids in the late 90s, since the late 1800s.

He was dominant in every aspect. In today's game he would have hit 1000 HRs with the expansion teams and more lively ball and some small joke stadiums like Minute Maid Park and balls flying out in Coors Field.
