Guess all of you not health sciences, nursing, medical, degree holding people havent heard of paragoric
moms used to give that to fussy INCONSOLABLE babies way back in the day...
Like LK said the point wasnt to get the baby snowed, and my post has nothing to do with the issue at hand of whether the mom was right or not..........but i will come in and vouch for LK.
a substance abuse social worker's perspective -- paragoric and methadone are similar, paragoric isnt on the market anymore, it has been replaced with immodium which is also a narcotic.
Quote : | "All I can tell you is my experience. I was the Social Worker for a perinatal substance abuse project. I am not a Dr. In my years on the job I probably saw about 50 babies born on methadone. The lower the dose the easier time the babies had. Many of the mothers breastfed their babies and what the Dr's told us was that it was a good thing. Breatfeeding allowed the babies to detox slowly and those babies that did breastfeed didn't usually have to take anything else. They get methadone from the breast milk. It sounds like you are on a pretty low dose. Trust your Dr. I have had a chance to meet one of the babies who took paragoric, he is now 16 and doing great. I also followed many of the babies born to moms on methadone and I never saw any negative long term effects. I hope this helps a little. You can ask anything you want and I will try and help if I can." |

^That has to do with babies that are born users, not neglectful mothers-like this article. Big difference. It's unacceptable no matter how you cut it. Ask a doctor, not that woman who said that she is not a doctor. 4/28/2006 6:30:14 PM |
