Thought it was a great movie...def on par with the first. I also agree that it was too long for 12AM showing but it was very entertaining, funny, and energetic. Love the plot and twists...Ending was great...Def can't wait for next summer.

I do agree a lil confusing at parts so I will def be going back to see it at least once...well worth every dollar...

not my review, but thought i'd share...

Quote :
"Okay, here goes my snobby review. Let me start by saying that I wasn’t a huge fan of the first PotC movie. I didn’t exactly hate it … it’s just that everyone else seemed to love it so much. I thought it was slightly boring and too long. Going into the second movie, I wasn’t exactly excited about, but thought that maybe it could be kinda cool.

First, the good:

Johnny Depp is outstanding, as expected. The computer graphics are exceptional. The new characters are very cool. There are also some very funny parts that had me laughing out loud.

Now, the bad:

Most of the acting is overly dramatic. Depp’s character is supposed to be extreme, so his portrayal was fine. The other actors seemed to lack any sense of subtlety, though, which was probably Verbinski’s fault. Elliot and Rossio’s script had some interesting things going on, but they took too many shortcuts. The dialogue was bad at times, too. This movie was also a bit long I thought, coming in at around the same length as the first one. And it basically has a “to be continued” ending, which I found annoying.

Frankly, my biggest problem with these movies is that they’re not realistic enough for me. I don’t mean that in the sense that there shouldn’t be pirates who turn into skeletons in the moonlight. I mean that within the fictional world in which the story takes place, things must happen realistically. That’s why The Lord of the Rings is so great. J.R.R. Tolkien went into so much detail that he invented entire alphabets for his fictional races. I wouldn’t expect PotC to have that much depth to it, but I wish it had a bit more than it does. If the actors gave more nuanced, realistic performances, and the writers spent a little more time connecting the dots, it would probably help.

So overall, I think that this movie is like candy. It’s pretty good if you’re in the mood for it, but if you’ve already had a lot, then you might get sick of it. I’m kind of tired of candy. It’s not nourishing. It has no long-term value. That’s not to say that I only wanna eat brussel sprouts and beets. I’ll eat sweet potatoes that have marshmallows on top, but I think I’ve had enough candy for a while.

But most people like candy, and if you do too, you should probably go see this movie.

SPOILER

Need some thoughts:

1) What exactly was Jack's debt to Jones?

2) Whoever has the heart controls the sea or Jones?

3) Why was the trading company lord needed to sign the papers to get them off the hook?

4) Why couldn't Jack know what he wanted (and don't say it was just used to show that he wanted to save the pearl at the end because thats just retarded).

5) Why the hell would (young) Turner and Elizabeth want to save Jack now? The chick shackled his ass to the boat and they both were pissed because he tried to pawn off Turner.

oh and one more thing, they seemed to have very little problem with rounding up 100 souls to trade for jack, that part was stupid as hell.

I thought it was entertaining, not even half as good as the first. i wasn't expected to be confused throughout the movie, It didn't seem like they could make it into that kind of film. If the second movie doesn't explain a lot I'll be disappointed again.

1) Jack's debt to Jones is briefly mentioned as backstory..13 years earlier (3 years before Barbossa's munity), Jack lost the Black Pearl somehow. Sparrow made a deal with Davy Jones to get his ship back. I guess Jack told Jones he could have his soul after a period of time. Bootstrap delivered the Black Spot to Jack, warning him of his death sentence.

2) I think whomever has the heart controls Davy Jones & his crew and the Kraken by default. In the hands of the East India Trading Company it would be dangerous because all the pirates in the world could be wiped out then there would be no more thieves stealing their products, etc. . Beckett seems like a slimy guy I think he would enjoy using that power.

3) Beckett brought the charges against Will and Elizabeth because they played a part in Jack escaping at the end of the first movie. Any one who conspires to help pirates is sentenced to death but I think Beckett's real motivation for the arrest is get Will to find Jack and the Dead Man's Chest. I think him signing the papers would be like dropping the charges / pardons.

wtf was with the random, "I love to cheat on my fiance` with the guy who fed him into slavery to Davey Jones.... I mean am I confused ? or was she playing coi so she could shackle him. That bullshit love triangle nonsense completely ruined it for me ...

call me old fashioned I guess

PS no .. "curiosity" is not a fucking good excuse.

ya the bullshit sequal ending was kinda frustrating but I could looked past it without the loving jack shit.

COMMENTING ON A SPOILER!

Yeah I thought the love triangle thing was bringing down the movie for me. I felt Will was getting shitted on because he was doing all this to save her and she was off falling for ol' Jack(at least the compass would make you think so). And I think one of her reasons for shackling Jack was not only because of what he did to Will and the lying, but also because she had feelings for him and wanted them to go away.

They could have left the whole love triangle thing out and I would have enjoyed the movie more.

nah fuck that ... like I said , call me oldfashioned but that's gay. atleast let them have a falling out or something.

barbosa was probably brought back from the underworld (the black lady seemed pretty familiar with Jack. Barbosa being his first mate and all, it would make sense that he was along for that adventure), hence his knowledge of the "coasts at the edge of the world" so he's going to lead them to go find jack ... a crew who's main man was his friend until he tried to have him ensclaed and a man who is trying to woo his fiance and the man whom his fiance is apparently being a whore with.

INTERESTING LOGIC I MUST SAY

overall kind of meh. Too long. Same jokes and antics as the first movie.
Still very exciting and fun, but I was expecting a bit more originality from it.

Elizabeth chained Jack to the boat because the Kraken was coming after him, not the boat. The Kracken was chasing the black palm or whatever the hell Jack had on his hand. Elizabeth magically figured this out and chained Jack up to allow everyone else to escape. If Jack had jumped on the life boat, the Kracked would have come after that and killed everyone.

the point he's raising is

why the fuck do they care now ? jack tried to ass over both of them, and elizabeth has "feelings" for him I guess. only bad comes from trying to go get his ass after they fed him to the kracken. doesn't make sense to me.

barbosa's two pirates were histarical tho. I really like their characters

random thought : of all the blabbering about wanting jack to "do the right thing" ....she sure the fuck didnt. typical women and their double standards

essentially how i felt.

I am extremely excited barbosa is back. he was my favorite character from the first one and him being in the 3rd movie as something more dynamic than an antagonist will be kick ass.

The love triangle was a bit heavy I agree, and I would have preferred they left the elizabeth/will connection strong and Jack's advances towards Elizabeth as comedy.

One thing that did irritate me, though its retarded, is that the Pearl needs 6 people to man her, yet there were fucking dozens of people on there just ripe enough for the Kraken to kill off.

The action was great, the characters were great, and the 'inside' jokes that referenced the first one (hide the rum, liz fainting, and others) were great.

I didnt find it too hard to follow either, though I do agree that its odd that will agreed to go to the ends of the earth to find jack. Elizabeth i can understand since she shackled him and left him to his death. Then again, maybe Will has revenge on his mind for both his father and the jack/liz kiss.

[Edited on July 8, 2006 at 12:13 AM. Reason : ok it doesnt irritate me anymore, they were picked up in tortuga]

hah, it just dawned on me that the legs they saw when they first visited the voodoo woman were probably barbosas. so either he knew they were there or she was in the process of bringing him back when they first visitied.

am I the only one that gets how Elizabeth only uses her charms on Jack to get what she wants from him? I really don't think there's a love triangle at all... I think she's just being a manipulative bitch with him (like what happened on the island when they were stranded in the first movie).

She only is upset because she feels that she was responsible for condemning him to death at the handstentacles and teeth of the Krakken after he had overcome his bought of moral relapse.

I suspect we'll find out why the compass didn't work for Jack in the next one. I suspect its because he didn't know what he wanted, the chest or to run.

btw stay after the credits if you want to see something mildly funny.

Definitly on the boat. the first time he hands the compass to her. it points to him when he's on the upper deck of the boat. and she has a "taken aback/ disgusted look" followed by the guilty scene on the steps where she talks about how she thought she would be married already. and then she has the "you wouldnt put me in a position to threaten my honor" speil

I really hope it's just an act and she's just being a bitch to get things done, and it's resolved next movie. I dont know why it bugs me but that really bothered me when I watchd it

They actually allude to Elizabeth's attraction to Sparrow in several scenes:

The British Commander saying something along the lines of: "is that really why you want to find Jack Sparrow"

The Commodore calling her out for flirting with him

The compass on several occassions

The slight advances in the first movie.

I mean, don't get me wrong, the could probably do without that and most people won't like it but I think it adds a bit of a nice tension between Liz and Jack that I hope the expand upon in the third movie or at least resolve somehow. Obviously the two won't fit together, but it should be addressed.

Fuck man, Pirates, ships, guns, swashbuckling, a giant Octopus. This movie was sweet.

i just kinda figured it didn't work for him for the same reason it didn't work for her when she was standing on top of the chest...

all he wanted was the Pearl, he was on the pearl the whole time, so the compass went nuts

after the credits they just show that the Dog was caught and made ruler of the tribe...

if they really wanted to mess with people, they'd kill the dog in the next movie and have jack crawl out of the carcass... but that'd probably be too graphic for most people
