while they aren't directly related, there are enough common threads running through the Final Fantasy series that i think you could count them here...
so i will..

Fallout barely makes the 3 game minimum.

Now if only Fallout 3 would come out. I miss that game so badly.

Fallout was revolutionary because it took the RPG out of medieval dungeons. For that it deserves to be mentioned.

it had a new system of combat for a RPG in a game, you could use cover and range to your advantage or disadvantage

what the fuck each zelda game is independant of the others

same base characters yes but you can't tell me that link to the past is a continuation of zelda 1 or that ocarina of time is a continuation of link to the past

each game is independant of the rest save for maybe one

Zelda isn't independent because it's the same universe everytime. The triforce is always there, it's always in Hyrule, and Ganon's always the villain, etc. Final Fantasy is a different universe everytime: different towns, characters, magic system (espers, etc.). I don't agree that Final Fantasy isn't a series for these reasons, I'm just pointing out where Zelda and FF differ.

The only real continuity in Final Fantasy is Chocobos.

all i'm saying is that each zelda game is independant of the others

if you say it isn't for the reasons you listed then final fantasy isn't independant because while each doesn't have the same characters they have the same character types

white mage
black mage
fighter
thief
red mage

common items

phoenix down
ether
potions
tents
cabins

common monsters

marlboros
basilisks
dragons
goblins

Storyline has nothing to do with what can be considered a series IMO. It's about gameplay. If FF1 was an RPG, FF2 was a platformer, and FF3 was a dating sim, you could make the case that they're not a series. However, there are a ton of gameplay concepts that carry over from game to game and a number of small points that remain present. (Cid, Biggs, Wedge, chocobos, airships, etc.)

On a different note, like it or hate it, Pokemon deserves a spot on the list, although not very high.

Series that got worse as it went along: 007
Series that constantly improved: Mario
Series that followed a bell curve: Metal Gear, b/c Solid Snake and MGS were the shit, and the most recent one didnt stack up, imho.
FF has been all over the place for me. V and VI were awesome, VII was great, VIII was dressed up a lot but not a great game, IX sucked, X was ok, X-2 was a guilty pleasure (but not that great), and i never played XI. If I had to choose the one series that is my all time favorite, it would be either MGS on the strength of the 2nd thru 4th games or Mario.

I'm with Shenmue for storyline and artistic innovation at the time it came out.

I was fully immersed in it the first time I played it. But, the 2nd go round I was less patient with all the dialogue and traveling by foot.

[Edited on May 15, 2006 at 9:33 PM. Reason : only 2 shenmue games, doesn't pass the at least 3 rule for the thread.]

I love MGS 3; although I thought it was too short, It was my favorite of the 3 main ones.

Metroid as a series, just going from all of the great 2d games (esp. ones on Gameboy) to Metroid Prime, to the new Metroid on DS is really awesome, innovation wise and story as well.

I think the DS and the Wii are going to carry new games of the same series to very high levels. Castlevania is only getting better with the whole dual screen/touch screen to cast seals thing, and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Sadly I'm losing hope for Final Fantasy. FF12 looks just like FFX, and FF13 is already looking like both as well. I think it might have to do with conservative changes in graphics to keep it consistant and selling.

GTA and Megaman to me have not grabbed my attention past the early games (they seem dry to me)

GTA3 was a big and fun jump. i liked 1&2 but my friends and i mostly just played them for a quick fix or fun multiplayer mayhem. 3 made you actually want to sit and play it. the dicking around aspect wasnt as good, but it had more playability methinks.

that said i never played or bought vice city and san andreas. i didnt even finish 3. was good, just felt a bit shallow to me.

MGS and Final Fantasy would have to be my favorites. Rainbow Six would have been on that list too a few years ago, but I can't stand the direction the recent ones have gone. Granted, none of these stack up to Mario in terms of actual significance, but those are the ones that I'm most attatched to.

Oh, and...

and if you say zelda is a series, then final fantasy is a series. the only zelda games with story continuity are ocarina -> mask, the only FF games with story continuity are FFX -> FFX2. every zelda game is in a totally different locale, though it usually seems to be on the same planet (awakening is one exception i guess since it's the dream world), same goes for final fantasy. the only things that "link" the zelda games together more than the FF games are the main characters. however, unless i'm forgetting something, ganon supposedly dies at the end of each one? (correct me if i'm wrong on that) so is it a new ganon each time or something? anyway, if there are multiple games under the same name, chances are they were at least intended to be taken as a series.

as to my current favorite series: elder scrolls, motherfucker. *goes back to oblivion*
favorite classic series: breath of fire
others i gotta mention: civilization, simcity, halflife (if 2 games is a series), xcom, star fox, gta, warcraft, age of empires, and im sure ive forgotten at least a couple others

i believe it was sort of explained that the zelda games do happen in the same timeline; link and zelda are reborn each generation, whereas ganon persists as the main bad guy. he's killed off in some of them, but resurrected or something.

I like the Halo series alot. Im surpirsed it hasn't been mentioned yet. I think they revolutionized the FPS on consoles.

Also, I love the Burnout series... continuous fun with those games.

Worlds Of Ultima: Martian Dreams went to mars way back in the day. There were also a few space RPG's that were pretty old.

Ultima has done a hell of a lot for the RPG genre. Getting out of the dungeon for Savage Land and Martian Dreams was a nice touch. Getting 3d in a much more complex way than doom or wolfenstein and doing it back in 1992. The world was more interactive than that of doom and move freely in more dimensions. This game was the forerunner to games like Elder Scrolls Arena, System Shock, and others.

The core ultima series has also done a lot in advancing story telling and interactivity and imersion in video games. Hell, the NPC's did more in ultima 7 (like actually weaving and baking bread and doing office work when they were supposed to) in terms of day-to-day life than they do in Oblivion. After ultima 7 things were kind of downhill though. Hell, 1 up listed ultima 4 as one of the top 25 most important video games ever, and 17 places higher than final fantasy VII. (http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3133897)

Alone in the dark 1-3 was also a really a really important series. This Lovecraftian horror series is the inspiration of many games like resident evil. Hell, the dogs jumping through the windows scene in resident evil was almost a direct homage to alone in the dark.

Heroes of might and magic was also a pretty great game, the first 3 at least. Insanely addictive, and a really unique kind of gameplay compared to the RTS craze that reached it's height during the series' lifespan. Maybe 5 will be the true heir to its legacy.

Wing commander was freaking amazing as well. Each game was fairly revolutionary for it's time, sometimes in a bad way. One and two were basically the best space fighter games out during their time, and had decently interesting plots. Wing commander privateer was a genre defying masterpeice really. It had exploration elements, trading elements, space fighter and rpg elements all in one really addictive package. Wing commander 3 was an excellent blend of story telling, game play, and new 3d and physics technology. Wing commander 4 set records for production value and had an amazing story but started to sacrifice gameplay for FMV cutscenes. I didn't really like wing commander 5 so let's leave that one out.

Oh hell, let's throw the elder scrolls series in here too. Not the most immersive or coherent worlds, but definately a blast to explore and hard to beat in terms of freedom and size.

A lot of Zelda enthusiasts hold firm to the "2 timeline" theory.... where there are basically 2 main timelines...
Also, not all Zelda games take place in hyrule and ganon/ganondorf is not always the bad guy....
For example, the GameBoy's Link's Awakening... Link was not in hyrule and the ganon/ganondorf wasn't even in the game.
(That was a great game, by the way)

I just love the general structure/gameplay of Zelda games and that is what keeps me coming back.
