my housemate has a KA-T. he's on engine #7 (iirc) from various odds and ends going wrong. mostly due to getting old used KAs and tossing them in. he dyno'd his old t28/370cc/ROM tune setup and the data logs looked fine across the board. just an issue of questionable longblocks to begin with. he now has a built engine, but he even managed to blow out his rings on that too from his wastegate losing boost signal, which then caused his turbo to eat its bearings apart (rings blew out mid-run, engine died, turbo kept spinning w/out oil pressure at a millionty RPMs). so much downtime. more downtime than driving/track time.

meanwhile, i have a 100% stock redtop SR with a gt2560rs (ball bearing s15 thing), 525cc's, n62, and a ROM tune. i've had it for about 3 years now, and it's been on that setup @ 15psi for close to 2 years. i have no idea where the engine came from, how many miles are on it, etc. i literally bought the longblock off a guy's garage floor. i daily the car, i take it to monthly drift events, sometimes an occasional auto-x, etc. the damn thing runs like a top, all day, every day.

as fun and torquey as KAs can be, you really can't beat the reliability of a simple SR setup.

p.s. downvote for RB. you either get the 20 for cheap and add way too much unnecessary weight up front, or you spend more money to get a more powerful 25 and still add unnecessary weight up front

ehhhhhhh, a lot of that depends on how much power you're trying to make. a stock SR longblock can hold more than enough power to do just about anything you NEED. by the time you're building the bottom end, you're probably just trying to roll the fuck out on the highway, haha.

plus and SR is already plumbed for oil/water feeds/drains to the turbo. KA needs adapter plates, bungs welded here or there, custom this, custom that... it's a much simpler process with an SR.

that said, KA-Ts are really fun!

(when they actually work)

...hooray for SRs!

I pass a redtop SR20DET swapped 240 parked on the side of the road fairly often.
Rarely do I pass by without thinking about the golf ball sized dimple that could destroy that car.
