"the guy wasn't in some local based competition, or some shit in the brickyard. he was in the db drag shit, which is basically a professional level of competition. i'm sure you're aware of that. i mean, he wouldn't be recognized as one of the best at the time if he didn't know what he was doing. i don't think his sponsors would be backing him either."

Plenty of people do things that work that aren't the best solution. You basically prove my point in that, you think just because that guy won some db drag competitions, what he told you must be right/ok. This bit of information we are debating (1/2" vs 3/4")

#1 flies in the face of every website out there
http://www.electronixwarehouse.com/education/enclosures/main.htm (doesn't make suggestion, but actually lists 1" under the MDF section)
http://www.cross-spectrum.com/audio/myspeakerproject/ (1" thick sub, 3/4" surrounds)
http://www.toshistation.com/thunder/default.htm (1" thick)
http://www.subzoneusa.com ( Quality Built Box - SUBZONE® Enclosures are constructed using the highest quality materials. 3/4" thick MDF (medium density fiberwood) is the choice material for box construction)
I just took these in order

#2 Just doesn't make sense when you really think about it
I got bored and took a box of 16x16x12, giving a pre-brace, pre-sub volume of 1.7 cu/ft, which is fairly typical for the average 12. Here are the calculations

3072 1.777777778

39 lbs-cu/ft
cu/in - wood cu/ft - wood
0.75 960 0.555555556 21.66666667
0.5 640 0.37037037 14.44444444

Man, that 7.2 lbs is really going to slow your ride down. This is before all the screws, glue, and braces required to make of for the lack of strength - is it fair to say this will amount to 2-3 lbs? And you begin to see how silly you are.

"if you're that anal about weight, like i am"

i guess you missed that part. i suppose it's silly, but i'm anal to the point when i was buying my 2nd new car (to replace a totalled one), i asked for zero options - including an a/c delete. the dealer made a great point by stating the obvious in that no car in the south is going to come without an a/c. the best "naked" car in black and manual transmission that he could find me was one that had a/c and floor mats, and he personally drove 4 hours roundtrip into south carolina to pick the car up for me. like i said, i'm pretty anal, and i ended up selling the floor mats, but kept the a/c. the day i picked up the car, i set off tearing away all kinds of needless shit like plastic resonators (which probably only shed a couple of ounces).

as for all the talk about the mdf depth, i'm not debating with you. in fact, i already digressed. you're bitching and lecturing about 1/4" difference. i was happy with my 1/2" mdf, and i seriously doubt the human ear could differentiate between that and 3/4" mdf with the same setup. it was a suggestion. i personally prioritized weight over sound, but still wanted some bass. i was fine with trading one insignificant gain for another which i put more value in. i'm not trying to force 1/2" mdf on bill.

Umm. You're certifiably retarded.

But...but...you were sooooooo confident about your depth of stereo knowledge that you to made the recommendation and now you are choosing to try and minimize it by saying "oh, it's just 1/4" difference, what does it matter".

You are totally clueless. A 12w6 with 500w on it NEEDS 3/4" + bracing. Period, end of story. Try it if you don't believe me. Build a 1/2 box. Either you go crazy with the bracing, in which case that whole weight thing you are anal about (why is it again you need suck low weight in your car?), or the box self destructs for lack of it.

Didn't say you were. Just making sure everyone here is aware of this really poor information you are trying to disseminate here.

I take issue with anyone that thinks they know car audio to the level to give advice like its gospel or good advice. I can't help you fucked up. You aren't the only one, I have been doing this in this section for years. I mean for fucks sake, there is a guy in this very thread claiming a sub that can handle 50,000 watts.

Just consider this an education. There are several other people in this section that are as qualified as me, they just don't need to add to the convo when I explore all the options anyway.

Stop being all defensive like what you have done is ok. You fucked up. You gave bad advice, admit it, and we can move on. I am coming off as arrogant, and I don't give a shit. If someone knows their shit, and gets right to the point in disproving incorrect information, then this should be commended. I can't help your feelings are hurt.

blah blah blah blah blah. whatever, audio king. i don't think my advice was bad, so whatever. if you think so, then great. i don't care. like i said, i was happy with the box and system i put together. you're reading way to much into my post, like i offered it as expert advice or something. i never did. that's something you're inferring due to your arrogance. so, whatever. of course i'm going to be defensive when some jackass is being dimunitive. like i said, i already digressed to your corrections and input. i mean, i don't understand what else you're wanting. you made your points. there's no need to fish for compliments and admiration. i'm not going to kiss your sorry ass. you need to get over yourself, guy. that's all i have left to say in this regard.
