Duke Kentucky as well...it's like my first sports memory. I remember it because I remember everything that lead up to us actually watching the game, and then the win and how our whole family errupted in the den after Laettner made that shot.

and the acc tournament in 2001/2002 season...we were playing duke in the final. we dominated the first half only to get dominated in the second and it was all over...i cried at the end of that game. and my brother, puts his arm around me and says to my parents, "welp...she's a state fan."

As an Eagles fan I have to say seeing Leon Lett stripped out of nowhere by Don Bebe with the super bowl points record at stake.

Darvin Ham, Texas Tech Basketball player, broke the backboard against Carolina in the NCAA tournament wayyyy back. All the players had to go into the locker rooms and take showers because the glass got into their skin and blah blah...

LSU vs Oklahomo in the Sugar Bowl

I remember going to the State Palace Theatre, which is like 2 miles away from the Superdome, and seeing the team bus off while walking there. We walk in the place, packed to capacity (over 3000), and 98% of the people there were LSU fans. We were so fucking loud in there, you'd think that they heard us in the Superdome... I was surrounded by some of LSU's craziest fans, and a couple Chokelahoma fans made the mistake of traversing back by us into the place. We gave em hell the whole night... right as the game ended, there was a huge exodus down Canal St. onto Bourbon. The game was won, but the party had just started.

I hate knowing that I won't be able to party like that - regardless of who is in the Sugar Bowl - ever again...

1996 Olympics. Women's soccer semifinal between the U.S. and China. It set the world record for most women at a sporting event - until 2 days later, when the record was broken by the final. Game was tied 1-1 going into overtime, and the US team brought in Shannon McMillian, who scored the winning goal 8 minutes later. 70,000 people were on their feet cheering "USA! USA!" It sent chills down my spine, having so many people going crazy for their country.

Being in Orlando for the '94 World Cup has to be the most memorable sports moment I was actually at.

On TV? Probably Rocket Ismael running back the phantom touchdown late in the '91 Orange Bowl, just because its the first sporting event I remember watching and being emotionally invested in. The 1993 "Game of the Century" is up there too (FSU vs. ND, #1 vs. #2).

Missed FG by Florida against UT in 98
Wilhoit hitting a 51 yarder against Florida 2 years ago after missing an extra point earlier
My most crushing - Buckner in 86
Duke beating Kentucky in '92
Bream is a good one
Otis Nixon's catch against Pittsburgh (Van Slyke I think)
Montana to Clark against Dallas - my first sports memory

Quote :
"this year: Game 2 of Hurricanes Vs Devils. When Eric Staal scored that goal with exactly 3 seconds left in the game to tie it up. I have never been anywhere that fucking loud. I couldnt hear my hand slapping that of every hand within a 10 foot radius of my seat, I almost fell off the balcony from jumping up and down, the whole arena was going insane."

I'd say that would be my most fondly remembered but as far as most memorable I'd have to say Game #3 of the Stanley Cup finals when Carolina lost to Detroit in the third overtime.

heelfan asked about the overall list too, but since that was already answered in post 16728729, I'll focus on the ACC edition. Here is my top 10 ACC most memorable sports moments from the last 40 years:

1. Duke back-to-back national titles (1991-92)
The Grant Hill-to-Laettner pass. The UNLV takedown in the Final Four. Two straight rings. The blueprint for modern college basketball dynasties.

2. NC State's 2024 ACC tournament run
Five wins in five days. DJ Burns becoming a folk hero. Last time a Wolfpack team went on a run like this, Jimmy V was pacing the sideline.

3. Virginia's 2019 national title
From the first 16-over-1 upset in NCAA history (UMBC 2018) to cutting down the nets in overtime 13 months later. The single greatest redemption arc in college basketball.

4. UNC ends Coach K's career (2022)
Beat him at Cameron for his final home game, then knocked him out of the Final Four. If you scripted the end of the sport's greatest coaching tenure, you could not change a thing.

5. Boston College stuns Virginia Tech (2007 football)
Matt Ryan, 2:11 left, 11-point deficit. Two TD drives in 131 seconds on a Thursday night in Blacksburg. The Hail Mary to Rich Gunnell still gives BC fans chills.

6. Randolph Childress, 1995 ACC Tournament
107 points in three games. A game-winner over North Carolina in the final. Shot fakes that broke ankles. The best individual weekend in ACC tourney history.

7. Duke women's five-peat (2000-04)
Five straight ACC tournament titles. Alana Beard, Monique Currie, Gail Goestenkors on the bench. A dynasty that gets overshadowed but was no less dominant.

8. Virginia ends FSU's perfect ACC run (1995)
The Seminoles joined the ACC and went 29-0 in conference play before Groh's Cavaliers knocked them off 33-28. Proved FSU's invincibility narrative had limits.

9. Clemson, first 15-0 season in modern CFB (2018)
Trevor Lawrence, that defensive line, and a 44-16 demolition of Alabama in the title game. First team since the 1800s to go 15-0.

10. James Madison over Virginia Tech (2010)
An FCS team walking into Lane Stadium and leaving with a win. Still one of the biggest upsets in college football history.

Infographic with both the ACC list and the overall list side by side.

Good question, heelfan. The ACC has given us a lot to remember.
