I am in a somewhat similar situation, because my new company doesn't give me my moving bonus until after I've been there for 2 weeks and the security deposit plus first month's rent is more than I was able to save on top of other bills and expenses. I've worked my deal out to where the security deposit won't be paid until the bonus arrives, and if I still need cash, I'll dip into my line of credit. I'm using a credit card for as much as possible to preserve my cash and will pay it off as soon as I get my first paycheck. Depending on your history with your landlord, you may be able to work something out with them to pay rent late without a penalty. It's worth asking. If not, immediately apply for a line of credit for your checking account because the interest and fees won't kill you nearly as bad as getting money any other way. Just be disciplined enough to pay it off as soon as you get the bonus and not play too much with your money in the meantime. 6/7/2006 10:23:16 AM |

^^Man, I am in the SAME boat. I have some money saved, but not nearly enough to move to Madison, Wisconsin from here. They're paying me relocation, but I dunno when that gets paid out. On top of that, if I remember correctly they only issue checks once a month so it could be a LONG-ass time until I get paid.
I just had my bank re-issue me my credit card

They are idiots for not going to their BANK when they need MONEY and asking what the best way to get it would be.
When I was 18, in a financial bind, and had no clue what to do, I went to my bank, explained my situation, and was walked through all the possibilities. Walked out with a line of credit and problem solved in literally 20 minutes.
You must live under a rock to even consider using Payday advances or Cash advances on a credit card. Payday loans run about 500% interest yearly, and Cash advances are over 25% in most cases. Just looking at that, anyone with a shred of common sense SHOULD seek alternatives.
Quote : | "This guy seems like a real holier than thou asshole. And has the gall to make threads solicting dates on here." |
What kind of stick got up your ass? Ernie too.
If you noticed, I answered her question succinctly. I then made a point to show that the alternatives that people mentioned in this thread are absolutely stupid. For one, because there are responsible, good alternatives that are easily found, and two, because it's unfortunate so few people have any common sense.
And where exactly do I solicit dates on here? Son, I have no problems in that area and any thread I make to that effect is an obvious satire (for people intelligent enough to be able to recognize such literary devices).6/7/2006 10:32:37 AM |

Quote : | "The answer to your question is:
Go to your bank, get overdraft protection AKA Personal Credit Line, and float it till you get paid. As long as you have a good history with your bank, you can generally get overdraft protection up to about 2500 bucks in about 10 minutes.
Generally most banks will charge you a 3-10 dollar finance charge for dipping into overdraft, but it's WELL worth it.
People who use Cash Advances on their credit cards, or god forbid a fucking Paycheck Advance Service (which are all shut down now in NC anyway) are absolute fucking idiots. " |
Noen has the absolute best solution here.
If you're not signed up for overdraft protection with your bank, do it now. Sooner or later you'll be in a situation where you need to write a check for something on the 29th of the month and you're not certain if there's enough in the bank to cover it. Not saying you should make this regular practice, but my bank just puts the excess on my credit card and I pay the rest off when I get paid. Plus I collect points on my card
In a situation like this, I'd go for just using the overdraft and making sure it goes to a credit card (not drafted from a savings account). Pay it off once the course is over and you have the cash.
Like Noen said, DO NOT go to a "payday loan" facility. You will be charged ridiculous interest.
Don't go overboard with this advice, but credit cards can be used for emergencies or situations like this. Just be sure to pay the money back.

^Actually my job is super great. I make great money and I have spent the last week put up in a nice hotel with all meals provided, learning a lot with certified communication specialist. I met a ton of great people and enjoyed the open bar and company of fellow employees each day.
AND they ended up giving everyone a substantial cash advance upon our arrival at the hotel to help offset expenses. I also learned I am not only getting paid for the 4 weeks I am training, but also for the 2-3 weeks inbetween(out of town a week and in town a week) and they gave me a $.75 raise.
I'll be out in Raleigh tonight taking surveys so if anyone sees me out, say hello.
^^I agree. I am preparing to switch my banking from Wachovia to the State Employee's Credit Union and get overdraft protection. Thanks guys. 6/17/2006 9:02:13 PM |

Tyler, what exactly are cash advances on credit cards?
I know that I can withdraw cash on mine (which was handy when an ATM found my debit card to be a nice meal for a few days), but it treats it as a regular purchace.6/18/2006 1:40:06 PM |

So here is the good news. This moment I stepped foot into the hotel, I received a $275 cash advance from my work. I also got paid for the focus group I did for American Eagle because all 9 awesome ladies participated...I got paid for the ball park franks promo I helped out with and I borrowed a little from mom and dad. They just gave us another cash advance at the end of the second week and I leave on Sunday for Indy for a 12 day stay. Being at training has helped me realize how awesome the company is and I made friends with some of the higher ups and one now has my resume in his hands.
If I would of had to, the credit card option was what I would have went with but it still takes a few weeks to get one. I'm glad the company was taking care of us. 7/7/2006 11:06:02 AM |

You're a dumbass. Whether or not she was getting paid, you don't bail out on jobs or internships. Her internship advisor is probably going to go nuts about her when she gets called for a reference or has to write a letter. That extra week she stayed may have changed her reference from "she's a hard worker" to "she was an amazing employee who did everything we asked...even staying an extra unpaid week when we needed her, etc..." Unless you don't need them to get a new job, you always leave your past job in the best way possible.7/7/2006 11:15:25 AM |

Agreed. I have an outstanding letter of recommendation from them and seeing all the hard work I put in to pull off the student art show for Artsplosure was well worth the unpaid week.7/7/2006 11:56:42 AM |

True... but I don't understand why people would do unpaid internships nowadays. Granted, I was a CSC student and looked to put in a few hours part-time at the NOC on campus, but that was different. My brother has a 3.9 GPA at App and is graduating this fall with some kinda financial investment degree, and he's working for FREE all summer at some firm in Winston Salem. I mean wtf, why put yourself through this crap??? 7/7/2006 12:03:01 PM |

^Yep. And to put something on your resume (which is the same thing).
I took a non-paid internship with the courthouse this summer because I had ZERO legal experience coming into law school and I needed something put on my resume. And if you HAVE to get a legal job after your second year and I needed some resume material bad. Was I broke??? Yep. But I bartend a few nights a week to make ends meet.
Paid internships aren't floating all over the place or everyone would have one. You have to take what you can get. 7/7/2006 12:58:40 PM |

I am really pleased that my part-time job has the potential to turn full-time and I know my beefed up resume and my portfolio will help me out with that. Not only did I intern for free, but I also volunteer. Employeers want people with experience and people with a good heart who are not always concerned with money....working for free and still making ends meet proves you are a hardworker who is willing to sacrifice and that is the type of person they are looking to hire.
Now, paid internships are awesome but they are hard to come by...I was lucky enough to get college credit for mine and the people I worked for gave me a large sum of money for graduation. I am also treated like a board member now with invites to meetings and such so I came out really well. 7/7/2006 1:49:25 PM |
