I could just as easily say that any game you like is a sport for guys who can't kick.

^ aha i thought the same thing. soccer is the most popular sport worldwide, so whoever said that is probably mildly retarded. if you dont like a sport, at least respect it.

I don't really like soccer at all, but I do like the world cup. Its interesting to watch and only happens once every 4 years...although I like the women's world cup just as much so I guess now its twice every 4 years.

I like the format of the world cup. The round robin where teams advance to a tourney format. I like the fact that ties are involved. It can bring more strategy into the round robin format, esp. for an underdog trying to use everything possible to get into the quarterfinals. (example-Trinity/Tobanga today)

Some things I hate...shoot-outs. I say you just keep playing until someone scores. Period.
Every time a guy gets hit at all, its like the guy becomes the biggest pussy in the world. I'm sure there are times when they get hit hard, but other times not. I've seen harder hits in flag football. I guess part of it is to get a call, which is even worse. Its like watching Manu Ginobli play soccer.
Just like every other sport, I hate the little "cheating" that goes on. They grab and push off and sometimes the refs call it and sometimes they don't.

Also, one reason a lot of people like the "football scoring" is not just b/c you 7 points for a touchdown. Its b/c you get different points for different things.

In soccer, if you are down by 1, all you can do is tie the score. Same with hockey.

But in football, basketball, and baseball, you can be down by 1 or more, and have a chance to take the lead with one play.

Esp. in football, where the different ways to score different amounts usually keeps the score at an odd total, so you can be behind by more than one score, but you have more combinations to get you back in the game and get the lead, etc.

But even with something like a 2-pt and 3-pt line in soccer (I guess indoor soccer has that), its still not something most people want to watch on a regular basis.

If it makes you feel better, Europeans hate shootouts too. As a matter of fact, if a game in a tournament setup goes to a shootout to decide the winner, I think some books officially still count the game a draw (point of view being no team was better, but someone had to advance).

I agree with the bit about scoring and you can only get one point at a time. However, I think part of what helps ignore that though is that there are three possible outcomes in a soccer game, compared to only two in a basketball, baseball game, etc.

And with the change FIFA made 14 years or so ago on changing the win-draw-loss point value from 2-1-0 to 3-1-0, it has made it less likely that a team will accept a draw if they believe they have a chance at victory. Fans of teams look at things more in terms of points gained as opposed to win or loss.

if you think shootouts suck the women's world cup match between the US and China ended in a coin flip and the US lost

This shit is boring as hell. Two passes before the other team punts it to the other side. It takes a year before some team even gets a shot on goal.

It's slow, there's no rhythm, theres no scoring, and the cool plays are few and far between.

I'd also like to complain about offsides. In basketball, you can have any number of players run past the last defender and stand by the goal. What's so different about soccer that they can't do that?

Because there's no skill in having a bunch of guys stand around the goal all day waiting for a ball to float in.

have you ever seen a european soccer stadium, they are HUGE and they are always full...I'm sure those were quite expensive to build so trying to say only poor people play soccer isn't a good assumption

its really disappointing that this country (USA) doesnt care as much about soccer like they do in every other of the 300 countries in the world. i mean they show video of countries playing where theres like 1 million people in a city square cheering and going crazy but you cant even go to a bar here and find 5 people watching soccer

^^I totally agree with that...I me no where will you see downtowns of any city being swamped with soccer fans, but I'll be damned if there isn't football fans out there and even baseball fans.

Our country always seems to be doing the opposite of every other country

I mean, we are america. We do what the fuck we want. They call it futbol. We call it? Soccer. I mean futbol makes sense. Why? Well you kick it with your.... foot. England probably gets all pissed with their ritzy accents saying, "this has been a game longer than you guys have been a country." We just cover our ears and yell "LALALALALALALALALLAALA" *show middle finger* "SOCCER!"

"Soccer" is short for "Association Football," which was the official name of the game when the Football Association first formalized the rules in 1863.

"well i guess i wasn't completly clear. what i mean is if there was a definitive line that stayed the same like the blue line in hockey, instead of basing it on the position of the second to last defender, i think the sport would be much better. i'm in no way advocating cherry picking, but it seems like whenever a good player anticipates that his teammate is going launch it over top for him, he gets called every so often for being off-side. imagine if they allowed you to get behind the defenders some 20-50 ft in front of the goal. imagine all of the exciting breakaways that could happen. i'd love to see a player charge from the side into the middle behind a couple of defenders, get the ball and go in for an exciting break away. with the way the rules are now though you have to make sure you are lined up with the defender at the time your teammate touches the ball. i think that it's just that i have the hockey mindset, and that i think it's a better off-side system. if i had played soccer all my life i would probably prefer the soccer system."

The NASL did try something sort of like this where they added an extra line on both sides to the field that was like a half field line. Scores were still 2-1. You have to realize that if all 10 field players cross half field for team A then team B can go stand right behind the line on the side of the field they are defending and not be offsides even when everyone on team A is standing in the box during a last second corner kick. Defenders stay near half field a lot of times to prevent the other team from staying onsides and getting a fast break. Any offsides rules change would just result in defenders changing the way they play and final scores of 4-2, 1-0, 2-1, 6-0, like the sport already has.

Hey Kobe, we need you to take the last shot...whats that? Well theres probably about 2-3 minutes left, wtf, does anyone but the referees really need to know!?!?!?!

If you want to defend soccer's timekeeping because "its always been like that," ok fine...but you're crazy if you rationally think about it and still defend their timekeeping...is it that hard for a scoreboard operator to 'pause' the clock for penalties, out of bounds plays, etc??
