Just delete number 1, it will add a nice growl and give you some extra pickup.

I deleted my Y shape resonator and replaced it with a 3.5" pipe. Sounds great and I could instantly notice an increase in the speed in which the car is able to rev up. If you want to see or hear it just pm me.

yeah there is definitely a restriction somewhere, the engine wants to rev faster and it has to be the exhaust holding it back. yeah i would like to hear yours, what year is it?

the restriction definitely isnt in the intake. the cold air setup i have is slightly better than the stock design, and more prone to sucking water up into the works.

I have a 1997 and I also have a custom intake using a 3.5" inch intake tube run just like the dinan set up for the 540. I also have the dinan software for it and m5 sways. I will be back in raleigh thursday if you want to check it out. It definitly revs better and sounds awesome.

I have been considering removing the last resonator located next to the muffler but have not done so. I'm afraid that much loss in back pressure could hinder the cars performance. Not too sure as I do not know enough about the engine or how that would effect it.

Get used to that tire wear - I burned through a set of Kumhos on the rear in about 10 months/15k miles - same inside edge pattern - might be worth asking for a bit less camber in the rear than the factory recommends.

^^ dealership list is $4.41

^ but it handles pretty damn well though like it is! its kinda fun with the tires like they are now, i actually get to push it to the edge in big corners and shit.

Those wheels are 1 of the most hideous pieces BMW has put out. At least get some M Parallels.

Welcome to owning a e39. Every single e39 with 17" or larger wheels will eat the rear tires up on the inside, quickly at that. It has nothing to do with driving habits, its just a characteristic that comes along with having the bling.

Thats good to know. I have to differ with you on the wheels though, when every other e39 I see has different wheels on it, I RARELY see one with wheels like mine. Now I really like the style 5's and the style 42's... but this is what I got and they look pretty good on a silver e39.

Hey, I still got another 8mos/10k out of those tires, assuming you're talking about the same ones that were on there when you sold the car. Yep, I'm the dude that bought your car
I did finally have to get some new tires front and rear this summer. Went with Kumho MXs. They're better in every respect than the 712s, but are so soft I'm sure the car will eat them even quicker than the previous set, which seemed damned fast anyway.

I don't know how many $k I've dumped into the car, but it's well worth it. I like it so much I even sold my Dakar M3. As you said, annoying? Yes, but entirely worth it, to me anyway. With the mods I've done to it, it handles as well or better than my E36 M3 did(cornering, anyway), and IMO a mediocre V8(M62) + six speed manual is better than a great I6(S52) anyday, not to mention faster in this case. That doesn't even speak of all the other things that make it better in addition to performance.

^^ yeah - same ones - 25k - not as bad as I thought they'd take it

I'll keep the e39 hating down a bit now that my old car is back on tww - heh

It is an incredibly fun car- just not what I was looking for at the time. Granted, what I'm looking for changes about once a year.

its in the thread im sure, but its like 153k or so.

1997 BMW 540i
4.4l V8/6 speed
Sport package
Cold weather package
All-Weather mats
Arctic Silver/Med. Grey
super clean, everything works
XM radio
all service records from first owner (second owner and myself are both high-end euro mechanics and we tend to do our own work)
153k miles
starts, runs, drives flawlessly
new rear tires, fronts are good
hard wired for Valentine 1 radar detector
M3 shifter for shorter more positive feel
Cosmo CAI
Super Blue Brake/clutch fluid
removed clutch delay valve to improve shift feel

Every regular e39 issue that typically goes wrong has been addressed and taken care of on this car. There is ONE (thats it) pixel dead, on the radio display sometimes it says TAFE instead of TAPE.
