I disagree. Even in hockey, from the time a team is attacking to being attacked and potentially give up a goal, about 6 seconds elapsed is all that is needed in some cases for this to happen, which is what I think Americans find entertaining. In soccer, it would take a minimum of 20 to go from being attacked to attack (and score), of course exceptions exist, but are not the norm. Soccer is a decent game to watch, but not nearly a exciting as any of the 4 major sports we have. Scoring a goal from outside of the 18 and some of those corners are entertaining, but overall, not close to any of the other 4 sports IMO.

If you're watching a game from 1982, maybe.

Otherwise, you watch the ebb and flow of the action. You watch runners from midfield go on short, overlapping runs, trying to draw defenders. You watch the back four pull up together, catching a forward offside when the attack becomes overwhelming. You watch the wingers cheat to the inside of the field, falling into the space between the strikers and the withdrawn midfielder as the fullbacks push up the sides.

Stuff like that.

You don't have to have a stoppage or a whistle for a strategic or formative reset. Don't be dense.

Anyway, the goaltender is so philosophically attractive as a person. He's not as powerful in soccer, but a hockey goaltender can just decide that he's going to win a game himself. Granted, he'll need a teammate to score one goal, but one is all you need.

all i know about goalies is that if you didnt have them there would be higher scores...and i think higher scores would automatically increase mainstream popularity to the sports

every sport is gonna have their diehard fans regardless...but to reel in the mainstream casual fans, increasing scoring would help

I don't inherently have a problem with soccer, all i know is that i have a deep seeded feeling of being robbed of a few hours of my life when i watch a soccer game, only to have it end in a 0-0 tie. Sure they go at it full speed for a legnthly period of time, but sometimes, its so non eventful, its hard for it to keep my attention.

Soccer is not going to become too much more popular in the US obviously. Americans like hard hits, fast paced action, and lots of scoring. Soccer doesn't deliver there. My point is, most Americans don't care too much about soccer, and that should be fine with everyone. There's no problem here. There would be a problem with soccer without goalies though. No one would watch that, American or not.

i mean the field is a lot longer but i think getting rid of the goalies would be far from incredibly pointless

soccer fans need to realize that the reason why football is so exciting is that there is more than one way to put points on the board

same thing with basketball- just look at how the 3 pt shot has changed the way the game is played

i mean i love lacrosse more than any other sport, but the fact that it's high scoring doesn't mean that it's always exciting to watch.

and i think we can all agree that PAT's can be thrown out in terms of interest and FG's are only exciting if they are near the end of a close game.

well obviously the outcome of a missed PAT or FG can later add to the excitement of a game

but considering that kickers make 99% of PAT's i dont think there is a more tedious process in sports. it obviously isnt a complete gimme, but it isnt exicting at all. And FG's only occasionally cause excitement, usually they only cause a light rustle.
