this is what pisses me off, I thought when I went to a place to get my haircut, the amount they charged was for the service they were providing to cut my hair? What am I paying for, the ware and tare on the scissors and combs?

I mean do you tip the person at the cash register who checks you out at the grocery store? They could dent your cans of peas and ruin your food, i mean wtf. The bill at a barber shop is for them to cut your hair right, so why would I tip them for cutting my hair?

I mean if they throw in a hand-job or something like that I could see tipping, you are getting something extra

Tipping in general is a horrible concept, barbers especially. You're paying for a haircut, no need to tip them for doing their job.

If the barber did a good job, I usually tip two dollars. This amount was confirmed as being appropriate--for barbers--by none other than Hank Hill in a _King of the Hill_ episode.

Hair stylists in high-end salons, however, will likely expect more money. You may be looking at the standard fifteen percent, which is also appropriate for restaurant servers, at these establishments.

By the way, I learned to tip haircutters from my then-fiancée some years ago. Until she told me, I had no idea that it was expected--unless your haircutter owns the shop. Then, it's your call.

Many everyday practices are established by tradition. Why bow as a greeting rather than shake hands? Tradition, of course, is the answer.

I agree with you that we should continually examine customary practices. Otherwise, we might end up with the old we're-doing-it-this-way-because-we've-always-done-it-this-way approach. Voluntarily tipping one's server, whether it is haircuts or food, seems harmless enough to me. Can we not agree on that, at least?

too each his own on tipping I guess, but it just seems that everyone tips all these people just not to be an asshole, I mean tomorrow I'm going to start tipping the gas station attendent, in 10 years will you be an asshole if you don't?

I just don't see where the line gets drawn, and I really don't mind if people tip or not, it's def your perogative, but it's when people get a sense of entitlement to a tip that really pisses me off (note I'm not including food servers/bartenders in this bc as I've said before I feel like I am paying for the food and liquid, not their service with the menu price, although their pay is certainly already factored into the price)

oh it undoubtedly takes a lot more skill, but like I said I can justify tipping them bc I say "the bill is for the food/liquor," eventhough as I said I know that their service is included in the price of those items.

However, it's really hard for me to rationalize what I'm paying for with a haircuit, I mean the whole bill is just for their service, I'm not gaining anything else from the experience, so I feel like whatever the charge is the amount their service is worth. I mean like I've said in like 100% of my last four posts, if you are going to use the argument that cutting hair is hard, it's certainly not harder than diagnosing an illness, filling a cavity, or flying a plane, yet we don't tip for doctors, dentists, or pilots

Now, you're probably going to say that we don't tip those professions bc they make way more than a hairdresser; however, also like I said before in this thread, the day that a haircut is as important as a safe flight, is the day the two professions salaries will be close in value, I don't see how tipping factors into that equation.

I would really like someone to address the points I laid out in this post, not to be a jerk, but to seriously try to understand how other people view this differently.

edit: do people who work at cost cutters or the like make a small % of the haircuit fee, or are they only paid an hourly wage? Because if they only get an hourly wage, than tipping makes sense, but if they also receive a % of the sale, allowing them to make more via higher volume, then I still stand by what I've said.

i do tip the guy that changes my oil, but i don't go to jiffy lube.... i usually tip when i get car service done.

but back to the subject...
say you go to a place and a men's haircut is $13. the barber can just cut the hair and he's done, pay the $13, even if it's not perfect. i appreciate those little things (making sure everything is even, cleaning up the back neck area, styling your hair) so i'm willing to give a few bucks for the barber for it.

there are a ton of tasks people do that we tip for that seem just as dumb/unnecessary.

my mother has always cut my hair so i never went to the barber until a couple months ago for the first time. I didn't tip because i didn't know any better. No one ever told me to tip my barber but i never asked. No one gave me any bad looks but a friend told me he always tips when he goes later that day so I felt kinda cheap. I think it isn't as important as tipping a waitress because that seems more obvious but maybe I am just used to free hair cuts.
