Are you kidding??? A lot of the managers I worked with had high school diplomas. Maybe half had college degrees and they were usually in stupid useless shit like communications.

i think just about every manager i ever worked for had a degree. they can make some serious money if they work for the right company.

I only tip 15% when the waiter is also the server and does a good job of keeping my drinks full. If they leave me dry for more than 7 minutes, they aint gettin a tip.

And I work in a restaurant too.

Given, we dont get tips at Panera (not even a frickin tip jar)...but I think a lot of waiters overestimate their serving ability.

BTW, we dont ever actually "mess" with someone's food, but if you come in less than 20 minutes before we close, expect your panini to come from the back of the tray (where they get either get burned or soggily fall apart) and your salad to have poor portions. We have to start closing the food line 20 minutes before close, and we have to start all over again (rewash cooking utensils, cutting boards, etc. Closing takes about an hour from start to finish) after we serve someone. This really sucks. Yes, we're being unreasonable, since our closing procedures arent common knowledge, but after the 9th hour on your shift you get a little unreasonable.

You can imagine us standing at our cutting boards, fuming at the only couple to enter the restaurant in an hour as they slowly browse the wall menu at 9:50pm. Their order has added 10 minutes to our clockout time, and every minute they spend deciding is a minute added onto that.

Except once people get their food, they dont leave. They stay and eat it...and then the whole staff is standing in the back, 30 minutes after closing, waiting to wash their dishes. Some people dont leave until we turn the lights off.

Company policy wont let us tell them to leave, and wont let some closing staff leave before others. Reasonable people would be mad at the company for its policies, but its just easier to be mad at the customer for being inconsiderate.

thats the same deal at virtually every food establishment. thats just what comes with having that kind of job.

My company policy is to do my work, not bitch about it, and be thankful I have a job at the end of the day. No wonder you work at Panera.

Man, fuck tipping

I always tip well, but I'm sick of hearing you waiters and waitresses complain about people tipping. You knew what you were getting into when you took the job.

Its not like its hard to find other work out there, if you dont like how people tip, get a new job.

^^^Yep, and at every food establishment I've worked at, people who come in right before closing are likely to get shafted. Plus its worse when your business slows to a crawl in the evening and a single customer means the difference between going home at 9:30 and going home after 10. Not to mention theres nothing there to offset the lateness (such as a large tip).

Its just courtesy. Good grief, you people act the 8th sin is anything less than 15% tip and then say untipped staff should be happy to wait on you after closing? Its all good as long as you order your food before closing time?

i can understand about the waiting after your closing times, but your original comments didnt mention anything about that. you said something about how you guys start cleaning things up before closing...and that its annoying to have to clean it all over again if someone else comes in.

comes with the territory - this is one of the many reasons why i never worked in the food service industry - go work somewhere else if you care

Well then take the sign that says open until 9:00PM down and put up one that says open until 8:30PM.

^actually that is true, if your tips for the month dont add up w/ your wage to be minimum wage, the employer has to supplement.


and staying late at a place like panera where you are waged is diff from staying late at a restaurant where the only extra money you get for staying late is that one tip
