I think soccer would be a lot better if the field was about 220' by 100' and you played 5 on 5. Shrink the ball down and let people use sticks to play and let people check eachother. Put this all on ice and you have yourself a sport. 6/21/2006 11:05:34 PM |

This article talks about Donovan and how he does not take shots on goal and always chooses to pass, a part of his game I've noticed and find incredibly annoying. He does the same thing in MLS for the L.A. Galaxy, a team that's decidedly few on good players this year so it's not like it's because he thinks the players around him are better that he passes. 6/21/2006 11:20:30 PM |

He lacks a killer instinct, the urge to shoot over and over even when he doesn't score. It's the same reason he pulls out of tackles, hasn't become a true leader on the team, and didn't even come close to sticking in Europe.
He's the anti-Clint Mathis. 6/21/2006 11:25:07 PM |

^ I know. What this team needs is an Ante Razov or (I'm a RBNY fan so this is hard) a Taylor Twellman, although I personally don't think he's good enough.
We have one player on the team though with that killer instinct in Eddie Johnson, but he's only had sub time against the Czech Republic. Amazingly, he was a rare bright spot in that game, but sits against Italy.
I think Arena is leaving after the World Cup (I thought that before it started, so it's not a performance issue). I hope that if he does they get a coach of the South American/Mexican/Dutch breed (I know they'd never hire a Mexican, but I'm just talking their style), one that focuses on passing and going through the defense instead of trying to go over with the booming David Beckham wannabe kicks that we constantly did (and were disposed of easily) against Czech Republic. Plus, as Eric Cantona says: "that's beautiful".
I'm expecting an American coach from MLS though.
