It cracks me up that he makes a big deal out of possible plargiarism (even though he has no proof the Einstein stole anyone's ideas), yet when I presented clear evidence that the Protocols of the Elders of Zion was a plagiarized hoax, he ignored it and said that it doesn't matter if it was plagiarized because it's true. 6/28/2006 2:26:11 PM |

this is by far the funniest trolling yet salisburyboy. While I understand the cacophony of voices leveled against the boy, I'm glad theDuke866 has allowed us to partake in this nonsense. I think we all know it's nonsense, probably even the boy himself.
Einstein's equation E=mc^2 is not just a stand-alone equation. It's derived and interpreted in terms of a cogent whole of physical discussion. We know length contraction was thought of by Lorentz before Einstein ( that's why it's called Lorentz contraction ), and for that matter all of Newtonian mechanics is included in special relativity. Anyway, special relativity would likely been found with or without Einstein. It can be derived on the basis of assuming electromagnetism is true, so the equations of special relativity are probably not Einstein's greatest gift to physics. What he gave was a physical interpretation, so equations aren't really the big thing when it came to special relativity. General Relativity would have been difficult to imagine w/o the physical interpretation given by Einstein, if we had endorsed the earlier ideas by Lorentz and other's that used some combination of ad-hoc mechanical effects and the ether then we would not have been as focused on issues of coordinate invariance. The idea of general coordinate invariance is a natural generalization of special relativity written in 4D-notation. So, sure Einstein didn't do everything but that's how physics works, it's a confluence of many authors work, Einstein just gets more credit cause he did alot of the hardest work.
Besides, as nastoute pointed out, Einstein did alot more than just relativity. I must say I think he was a very selfish and bad man if half of what I saw on the recent PBS special about his 1st wife was correct. But, if you want to give an example of an overly credited scientist then Hawkings is my pick. There are many who have done more interesting and influential work during his career. 6/28/2006 4:00:41 PM |

Hawking captures the public interest because he's overcome such great odds to be where he is.
sure someone might be smarter or more prolific, but hes the only one with a muscle-wasting variant of ALS who has done theoretical work on black holes and quantum cosmology, while making them accessible to the lay person.
and FYI, mathman, you can sniff that the current Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge is just an overrated physicist, but you should at least spell his name correctly. Otherwise someone might assume you don't really know what you're talking about.

Perhaps, but I don't really care so much what people think about my spelling. And if that is what you base your opinion of my knowledge of physics on then to bad for you. I would hope that content would outweight grammar, but then I suppose you'd have to understand the content... 6/28/2006 8:05:23 PM |

Quote : | "Was Einstein a plagiarist?
By Lucy Sherriff Published Monday 15th November 2004
A theoretical physicist at the University of Nevada has published a paper alleging that Einstein did not derive the gravitational field equations at the heart of the General Theory of Relativity, and might in fact have copied key equations from fellow physicist David Hilbert.
The two scientists were working in the same area in 1915, and were developing their theories independently but concurrently. Each submitted papers for publication throughout November of that year. The two were also corresponding about their research, making it hard to unravel exactly who knew what, and when. As a consequence the question of which researcher can claim priority has been the subject of some debate.
Prof. Friedwardt Winterberg says that contrary to the conclusions in a paper published in Science in 1997, Einstein did have the opportunity to plagiarise Hilbert's work. He claims that printer's proofs of Hilbert's paper have been tampered with, and that a key part of the derivation had been excised.
In their 1997 paper, Corry, Renn and Stachel concluded that Hilbert altered his published paper to include the correct forms of the gravitation field equations after seeing Einstein's final paper. But Winterberg argues that this is impossible. Winterberg suggests that someone deliberately tampered with the document, specifically to support claims for Einstein's priority. He compares the 'mutilated' document with published papers, and notes that certain forms of Hilbert's notation were only used by Einstein at a later date.
"My analysis of Hilbert's mutilated proofs therefore cannot prove that Einstein copied from Hilbert," he says. "It proves less, which is that it cannot be proved that Einstein could not have copied from Hilbert. But it proves that Hilbert had not copied from Einstein, as it has been insinuated following the paper by Corry, Renn and Stachel."
Winterberg concludes that three people should be given credit for developing the general theory of relativity: Einstein, for recognising the shape of the problem, Grossmann for his insight that the contracted Riemann tensor was key to solving the problem, and Hilbert for completing the gravitational field theory equations." |
