for those of you who care:
Quote : | "With his former high school coach now on staff at ASU and with his mother preparing to move into a house in the Phoenix area, Harden had already stated that Arizona State was a slight favorite over USC, Arizona, Washington and Washington State. Now with the commitment yesterday of his former high school teammate Derek Glasser to Arizona State, Harden spoke as if a commitment to the Sun Devils was a forgone conclusion.
"This changes things a lot," said Harden. "Derek is my boy. He called me yesterday and said he was thinking about getting out of USC and going to ASU. I called him after my game last night, and he said he gave Arizona State a commitment. In the next couple days I'm going to see where I'm at and then hopefully make a decision."

Sendek is actually pretty funny when you here hom in casual encounters. He just always took his job seriously. I know sports radio guys, like Packman, used to always ask him why the different persona in the media/court because personally he was so different.7/10/2006 1:55:42 PM |

Quote : | "Having the staff in place even before Lowe officially started earning a paycheck helped State land small forward Johnny Thomas just weeks after Thomas put on a breakout all-tournament performance at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in the Triangle over the Memorial Day weekend.
Lowe, like the rest of the NCAA Division I men's basketball coaches, wasn't allowed to comment on Thomas or any other players State has been recruiting this weekend.
But State is in the mix for several other high-profile players from of the Class of 2007. One key figure State hoped to land this weekend at the Reebok ABCD Camp in Teaneck, N.J., was Anthony McClain, a highly regarded center.
Before that, at Nike, Lowe had a chance to watch both of the point guards State has been pursuing -- Chris Wright, who originally had chosen State then changed his mind when Sendek left, and Jamelle McMillan, son of former Pack star and current NBA coach Nate McMillan.
At one point on Friday, Lowe sat along the baseline conferring with Harris, Sendek's former assistant, while Sendek stood 20 feet away along the sideline of the same court watching the same group of players.
Recruiting is a competitive business and that's why Lowe is scheduled to spend 22 of 31 days this month on the road flagging the players he thinks will fit into his system.
"My feeling is that it's an even playing field," Lowe said about recruiting. "You watch and take the good and utilize it yourself. But, if you want a kid, you have to get in there and battle. You have to work harder than they work. My thing is I'm going to do what I have to do to get a kid, bottom line short of doing something illegal. You've got to hustle. And if the kid has to see your face every time he looks up, then I'll be right there.""" |
this has something to do with ASU's recruiting

I don't think you quite understand... taking something seriously does not mean being exceptionally expressive with ones emotions. He rarely cracked a smile at big moments, like when we took down UConn. Herb is stoic on the court, but very different in person.7/10/2006 4:23:05 PM |

I understand perfectly....I just wanted him to show me passion every once in a while. When you're the leader of a group, the group feeds (or should) off you. I just think Herb seeming lack of emotion bled into the player psyche......which, i think, is a major factor for us not being able to finish big games. down the stretch of a big game, players are tired, physically and mentally, sometimes that raw energy is what you need to win a game, and that raw energy is what we seldom had. I could give a damn if he went into a rage in his office after the game....he didn't have emotion (dare i say heart?) at the right time.7/10/2006 4:39:46 PM |

I pointed out that people are misinformed when they think Sendek is not a fun, light-hearted, joking, or emotional person simply because he doesn't do that on the court or in large press conferences. You responded with the implication that he must not take his job seriously because he doesn't show emotion when we lose a big game: flawed from a relevancy AND logical standpoint... if anything you could say he takes his job too seriously. Besides, if you think that he never showed emotion on the court then you must not pay very close attention. A coach doesn't have to whine like a little bitch or degrade players/officials to show emotion, no place for that.7/10/2006 5:57:41 PM |

umm, i don't see anywhere in that post that says he didn't take his job seriously, so it looks like you reply is the one that is flawed in relevance, since you pretty much made something up.

most of the emotional output that i saw from herb consisted of him crouching down and grabbing @ his neck when things were close late in a game (aka "the choke", and appropriately we ended up losing almost everytime he did that). That is not the type of emotion/action that i like to see the coach display in a close game. And, like before you put insert phantom meaning into my post.....i never once said he should whine, or degrade anyone. if that's the only way you think coaches can be emotional, you're the perfect herb fan.7/24/2006 11:05:56 AM |

^^^He just narrowed his field to Three schools. State, Clemson, and ASU. I wouldn't trust those ratings. Remeber Julian Vaughn committed to FSU out of the Blue, and State has yet to be listed on Hickson's list even though he is taking an OV here in September.
McMillan will be at State 9/9/06

ASU gets verbal from James Harden, the #18 player in the country (#4 Shooting Guard in the country). It was assumed for quite awhile but this makes it official. Big "get" for Sendek & Co.

BIG news indeed!
he's a good slasher, has great court presense and apparently has good basketball IQ
great land for Herb
good post from my ASU message board:
Quote : | "This is obviously phenomenal news, getting a player of this caliber when you are a new coach trying to turn around a program. Let's just analyze what Coach Sendek has done since arriving here...In addition to hireing a coaching staff and moving across the country, he lands the most prized transfer out there after last season in former McDonald's A.A. Eric Boateng. He convinces our best current player Jeff Pendergraph to stay when major schools around the country would have jumped at the chance to offer him if he decided to transfer. He rounds out next fall's recruiting class by convincing Rob's recruits to stay and getting two more solid players to sign at positions of need (Shipp, Glasser). He immediately establishes local high school connections and lands one of the top players in the class of 2008 (Taylor Rodhe). Then he lands a top 20 player like Harden and has us at least being considered by several other good 2007 recruits despite the fact that ASU got to the scene very late on these players because of the coaching change. The most amazing thing is that he has accomplished all of this in FOUR MONTHS!!!! As someone who loves college basketball, I can't tell you how great it is to have someone at the helm who has a sence of direction and energy. Sorry for the length of this message but I'm pumped! " |
