anyone, especially major sports writers (who aren't just trying to sensationalize and create controversy), who thinks that amato is a bad coach is a flatout idiot, especially if they think he is one of the 5 worst. 10/11/2006 3:48:49 PM |

Personally, I think its garbage.
I dont think Chuck Amato really made a big decision. Stone completely forced his hand. What decision was there to be made? Could he really keep starting a 4th year QB who cant throw for 40 yards against D1-AA schools?
If anything I'd be critical of the fact that he didn't start Evans at the beginning of the season. Surely, it was obvious in practice that Evans was better. I'm not buying that Stone ever looked better than Evans in practice at this point. Not possible. 10/11/2006 3:49:35 PM |

I know he was a 4 star
But that was 4 years ago.
Its time to make a re-evaluation.
Stone sucks dick. Amato knew our defense wasn't going to be dominant this year and that throwing a guy out there who can't accrue positive yards wasn't going to work.
Or did he?
I don't trust him, maybe he thought we could win on punt returns... 10/11/2006 4:10:22 PM |

Trent Dilfer got the job done in Baltimore too, then they got rid of him.
And don't tell me this isn't a good analagy, because it is PERFECT. 1. Dominant defense 2. Good running game 3. QB controversy between 2 mediocre QB's
Eventually they found the QB that could manage the game and make fewer mistakes, won a superbowl, then they kicked him to the curb. 10/11/2006 4:20:40 PM |

Last year is last year.
This year is this year.
Stone "got the job done" because honestly there wasn't much of a job to be done. Our defense/running game was on point the 2nd half of the season. We knew our defense wasn't going to dominate this year. You can't go into a game with an average defense and an atrocious offense.
Atrocious offense last year was good enough to win. This year it isnt.
You start the QB who gives you a better chance to win. Now if Amato had reason to think that Stone gave us a better chance to win than Evans then so be it.
Personally, I had reason to think Stone gave us a better chance to win.
But I'm not at practice everyday.
At this point I refuse to believe that Stone was outperforming Evans in practice.
Or even performing similarly enough that his edge in experience would compensate.
Evans probably should have been starting from the get-go or at least after the App State game. We might be 5-0 right now and our current QB would have another three starts under his belt to draw from.
As it is now, we're 2-2 against D-1 teams and fighting for a bowl game.

and how many times have they made the playoffs since? Uh huh
^Sure me and you didn't see as many State practices as Amato...but Stone CLEARLY knew the offense better...hell in the BC game they said Trestman only drew up like a dozen different plays for Evans...so Stone had that going for him
also regardless of how good Evans may have looked in practice, you don't bench the guy who just came off a 5-1 record, regardless of how much the Killer B's and the defense were responsible for those wins...beating App, even though we didnt hang 40 points on them, was not gonna lose Stone his job
And after losing a very close game to Akron, its not quite a no-brainer to swap QB's...one more defensive stop in that game and Stone is 7-1
I can't fault Amato but at the same time I don't want to10/11/2006 5:05:09 PM |

That statement is so wrong on so many levels. Stone did not win a single game last year. The difference in this year and last year is that our Defense was so dominant they would have won the Akron game for us and kept us in the USM game.10/11/2006 6:21:04 PM |

I would have benched Stone based on the fact that he was fucking terrible last year.
I don't buy the "oh he's 6-1 as a starter" or whatever horseshit stat our coaches threw around. Stone's offense was predictable and limp. 10/11/2006 6:43:38 PM |

Stone was 6-1 at one point.
But he was 1-2 against BS teams this season.
If Evans would have played vs. Akron or Smu I'm sure we would have had a better record. but he is 2-0 If Stone would have continued to now, we would be 1-4 and every single one of your piss ants would be calling for Amatos head on a plate. 10/12/2006 2:14:09 AM |
