Quote : | "Is that a grenade in your pocket?
August 23, 2006
BY STEFANO ESPOSITO Staff Reporter
Mardin Azad Amin found himself in a tight squeeze last week when security at O'Hare Airport discovered a suspicious-looking object in his luggage.
So, Amin, 29, handled the delicate situation this way: He told security the object was a bomb, Cook County prosecutors say.
The security guard then asked Amin to repeat what he'd said to a supervisor. This time, Amin was chuckling as he spoke, prosecutors say.
In fact, Amin was trying to disguise the fact that the black object -- resembling a grenade -- was a component for a penis pump.
All the same, Amin was charged with felony disorderly conduct and faces up to three years in prison if convicted, said Andrew Conklin, a spokesman with the Cook County state's attorney's office. Amin is due in court today for a preliminary hearing, Conklin said.
Amin eventually told investigators he'd lied about the object's true use because his mother was standing nearby when the object was discovered and he didn't want her to know about it, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing last week.
The incident occurred Aug. 16 as Amin was set to catch a flight to Turkey, Scaduto said.
Amin has no known criminal history, Scaduto said.

Quote : | "SAN DIEGO – Nothing went right for the bumbling gunman wearing a Ronald Reagan mask and a cape who held up a Grantville bank Tuesday morning.
The thief walked into the Bank of America on Mission Gorge Road at Friars Road just after 10 a.m. with the mask covering his face and told everyone in the bank to get down, San Diego police Lt. Lawrence McKinney said.
His first mistake was wearing a mask that obstructed his view. His second was wearing a cape that got tangled with his gun, causing him to drop the weapon on the ground, McKinney said.
He then picked it up and robbed one of the tellers.
When he ran out, he found his third mistake: his getaway vehicle, a dark-colored Chevy Suburban SUV, was blocked in by delivery trucks making their drops, McKinney said.
Desperate to run, the robber peeled off the mask and rammed the vehicle against the delivery trucks to get away, ticking off one of the delivery truck drivers who started to argue with him, McKinney said.
“He started ramming the trucks back and forth, back and forth,” McKinney said. “This guy is an idiot. He was calling more attention to himself.”
The robber was able to force his way out of the parking spot and drove eastbound on Crawford Street. That's when the dye bomb hidden in the money exploded.
The robber then got out of the SUV and ran away, leaving behind his mask, his gun and a $50 bill.
“He obviously had a flair for the dramatic, but he didn't execute it right,” McKinney said.
Police said the money stolen from the bank was still missing but the dye most likely ruined all of it.
Witnesses described him as a black man in his 40s, heavyset, about 6 feet tall with thick sideburns and dye on his clothing.
No one was injured in the holdup. Police did not disclose how much money was taken.
They believe the vehicle, with out-of-state license plates, was reported stolen. It may have been used in another robbery in San Diego County earlier this week, McKinney said.
Police said the robber left behind some good leads for officers to follow. " |

They know because he wrote it all down on paper. And police found what they said is his checklist when they searched his home Wednesday night.
On a piece of paper inside the FEMA trailer where he lived near his ruined Lakeview home, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office detectives investigating the death of Mary Elizabeth Marinello said they found a to-do list of sorts, with checks beside each entry: mustache and beard, bicycle, gun -- even a reminder to throw away the weapon.

Quote : | "BOSTON (Reuters) - A prostitute forced repeatedly into having sex with a Boston policeman said she feared the abuse would never stop -- until she stole his badge.
When the officer, Michael LoPriore, telephoned her to get it back, the FBI was tuning in to their conversation, the 19-year-old's lawyer, John Swomley, said on Wednesday.
LoPriore, 37, was charged in federal court on Tuesday with depriving the woman of her rights by using his position as a police officer to force her to perform sex in his car in September 2004.
Under a plea agreement, the 12-year veteran of Boston's police force will plead guilty, resign and never seek another job as a police officer in Massachusetts. Prosecutors are recommending that he serve a year in prison.
Swomley said LoPriore had stopped the teenager in a downtown red-light district known as the "Combat Zone" while he was off duty and in his personal car.
After showing her his badge, he ordered her into the car and drove to several locations where he forced her to perform oral sex, he added.
"She told me the badge was stuffed in a little cubby in the front console. His head was back and he wasn't really paying attention to where her hands were," he said. " |

"I mean if you're going to go for the win, I guess that's the way," said Craig Evans from Brush Valley.
Sunday morning, Kern and Bivens pushed their luck, stealing the cups with the game pieces attached from the McDonald's off of Wayne Avenue.
"They're really stupid," said Sarah Galiotto of Greensburg. "It's dumb if they thought they were going to get away with it, because they wouldn't."
Indiana police say one of the suspects jumped the counter to grab the "Easy Street" cups while the other was the look out, but employees didn't let the two get very far.
Employees wrestled the suspects to the ground and waited for police to arrive.
Kern now faces theft and underage drinking charges and Bivens faces a criminal conspiracy charge among others." |

Quote : | "Did A Mother's Faith Contribute To Her Murder?
Why would a 28-year-old man, described as sweet, kind and gentle, take a knife to his mother one morning in 2003 and stab her over 70 times?
Jeremy Perkins, who had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, came to believe that his mother, Elli, was evil and out to get him. Experts say the brutal murder might never have occurred, had he received proper treatment to control his psychotic delusions. But Jeremy’s parents were devout Scientologists and their religion strongly opposes psychiatric treatment." |

Today's theme: FIREWORKS!
Quote : | " A SQUADDIE who stuck a firework between his buttocks and set it off suffered horrific injuries.
The bonfire night prank backfired when the man, 22, told pals he was “bored” with a fireworks display.
He dropped his trousers, and slipped a powerful BLACK CAT THUNDERBOLT between the cheeks of his backside and a pal set it alight.
As the soldier bent over to give his pals a show, the flare-type firework exploded in a shower of blistering hot sparks.
Laughing witnesses at the Sunderland event filmed the episode on a video phone not realising their mate was seriously injured.
Yesterday he was still being treated for burns to his nether regions three days after the incident.
The dangerous stunt mimicked the Jackass movie where a show regular fired rockets into the air from his butt." |

The 71-year-old woman has lost about $70,000 in retirement savings and her son, 46, owes more than $100,000 for his contribution to "a very believable" scam, which has played out during the past 18 months.
A reverse mortgage has also been taken out on their home.
--
To add to their woes, the police cannot do anything. The pair not only voluntarily gave the money away, they continue to do so.
The pair are trusting who they believe to be the Central Bank of Nigeria to "investigate" the fraudulent email scam and have paid a further $10,000 for the privilege.
The woman fervently believes the "Nigerian bank" won't let her down "I trust them," she said and maintains some of the emails were legitimate.
Meanwhile, they incurred "late fees" for not getting an application to the bank in time. " |

The teenager became addicted to QQ, the most popular online chatroom in China, and stayed in the Internet cafe for days on end, the agency said, quoting the boy’s father.
He fell for a girl called Qunjiaofeiyang (Flying Skirt) on the net, who described herself as a beautiful 19-year-old.After weeks spent chatting with her online, he arranged a date on December 26 in Mudanjiang, 73 miles away from his home town.
"To his intense disappointment, his dream girl turned out to be a plain lady who was more than 10 years older than him," Xinhua said." |

Quote : | " A college student who mistakenly submitted a compact disc loaded with child pornography images to his professor last week is now facing felony kiddie porn possession charges.
Andrew Erickson, 18, of 57 Lee's River Ave., Swansea, was arrested by Fall River and Swansea police late last week. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released after a family member posted his $500 cash bail. The Bristol Community College student was to submit his computer information systems final examination on compact disc last week.
But instead of submitting the class work, Erickson allegedly handed in a disc that contained images of children as young as 7-years-old in sexually explicit situations. The disc, according to police reports, listed each youth by age, ranging from 7 to 14.
The professor opened the compact disc while at home last week, and upon realizing what was on the disc, turned it over to Wayne Wood, BCC's director of public safety.
Wood immediately set up a meeting with Fall River Detective Brian Cordeiro, which was held at the Elsbree Street campus last Friday.
Sgt. Ronald Furtado said after viewing the disc, police requested and received a search warrant for Erickson's home. He said Fall River and Swansea police executed the search warrant late last week and found "other items that were taken into evidence," from Erickson's bedroom.
Prior to being arrested, Erickson apparently realized he had handed in the wrong disc to his professor.
Police reports quote an e-mail Erickson sent to his professor, in which he appears to attempt to shift ownership of the disc from himself to an unnamed friend.
"Oh snap, I am sorry. I accidentally gave you my friend's mixed music CD that I meant to keep here and install the music on my computer," Erickson said in an e-mail to his professor. "I found the CD with the (final exam) on it. If there's some way I could send it to you, that would be great.
"I am sorry about that, and hope it didn't affect the grade at all. Again, if I could get that CD back so that I can install the music. Sorry for the mix up."
Erickson is due back in Second District Court for a pretrial hearing Feb. 21. " |
