The first letter in the first word after the colon should be capitalized.7/15/2006 9:26:10 PM |

^Opinions actually vary on that one.
I mean, yeah, if the text after the colon is a complete clause, some folks say that you're definitely supposed to capitalize, but other folks say that you're definitely not supposed to capitalize after a colon EVER.
I love ignoring the basic rules of grammar and punctuation.
For example, let's say I'm exasperated that I have to go to the store again to get more groceries. I'm not gonna type, "Oh, I have to pick up tampons, beer, apples, milk, and ketchup." I'm gonna type, "Oh, I have to pick up tampons and beer and apples and ketchup and milk..."
I also like "incomplete thoughts" a whole bunch. I don't say, "You really need to check yourself right now." I say, "You really need to check yourself. Right now."
I use certain types of punctuation too often and indiscriminately, and I think I'm gonna take it a step further: no more semicolons! I'm going to replace all my semicolons with colons.
Instead of writing, "Man, I feel like shit today; it's like my body is falling apart," I'm going with, "Man, I feel like shit today: it's like my body is falling apart." And, no, I will not capitalize that letter after the colon. Well, maybe sometimes I will but only when it adds to the feel.
LOL

I think it is kind of pointless to keep highlighting people's grammar errors on an internet messageboard in any case and I understand you douches keep saying we are talking about highschool education standards. However, as I already pointed out, even with these new standards these kids only have to pass an EOC test on English 1. Now, I felt my freshman english was of great use, but that was only because I was in the hardest level of that english (4/4). When I went into my sohpomore english, they discontinued the four levels and I just took the honors version of that english. Everyone in that class was a fucktard. We were, at best, learning very basic grammar and punctuation and most of the class still was clueless. 7/16/2006 10:11:42 AM |

I feel like I was woefully under-prepared for college in most of my high school classes. Anyone from a rural county probably feels the same. Even now, even with an English degree, I make common errors if I'm not careful. 7/16/2006 10:17:06 AM |

Like BridgetSPK said, opinions vary.
All I'm saying is, if you're going to try to invalidate someone's point by showing they're a moron and can't spell, you'd be wise to not fuck it up yourself when doing so.
I really couldn't care less about other people's spelling 90% of the time, but if you're going to try and insult someone because of it, then fuck up yourself, you deserve to be called out on it.
Back to the topic, the fact is that such low standards and requirements do nothing except shit dumb people out of high schools rather than taking the time to actually give them the education they should be receiving.

By the way, folks, the first letter of a word placed after a colon is capitalized IF it begins a complete sentence. If the sentence in question is NOT a complete sentence, lowercase would be appropriate. 7/18/2006 10:33:02 AM |
