Quote :
"WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 — An enduring mystery of the C.I.A. leak case has been solved in recent days, but with a new twist: Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the prosecutor, knew the identity of the leaker from his very first day in the special counsel’s chair, but kept the inquiry open for nearly two more years before indicting I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff, on obstruction charges."

Quote :
"Richard L. Armitage, the former deputy secretary of state, first told the authorities in October 2003 that he had been the primary source for the July 14, 2003, column by Robert D. Novak that identified Valerie Wilson as a C.I.A. operative and set off the leak investigation."

Quote :
"The inquiry seriously embarrassed and distracted the Bush White House for nearly two years and resulted in five felony charges against Mr. Libby, even as Mr. Fitzgerald decided not to charge Mr. Armitage or anyone else with crimes related to the leak itself."

i have no words for this...this was a politically motivated affair intended to distract and bring down the president...fitzgerald is a worthless piece of crap

Agreed. Only an idiot would've picked that guy to investigate the case...

It doesn't exonerate anyone. The only thing the Armitage revelation only indicates that the conspiracy was deeper than we thought.

Quote :
"Armitage had been sent a key memo about Wilson's trip that referred to his wife and her CIA connection, and this memo had been written, according to special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald [who was appointed to investigate the Plame leak], at the request of I. Lewis Scooter Libby, the vice president's chief of staff. Libby had asked for the memo because he was looking to protect his boss from the mounting criticism that Bush and Cheney had misrepresented the WMD intelligence to garner public support for the invasion of Iraq."

Quote :
"The confirmation of Armitage's role has provoked criticism of both him and the special counsel, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, who learned of it shortly after his appointment in 2003. Some have questioned why Armitage waited so long to speak up about it, and why Fitzgerald spent two years appearing to chase a question that had already been answered.

Armitage said yesterday that he did not disclose his role before now because Fitzgerald had asked him not to. But word of his role eventually began to circulate, and on Tuesday, Armitage said, he asked Fitzgerald to be freed of that promise. Fitzgerald agreed.

Armitage said that he was asked, during the course of the investigation, whether he had discussed the leak in advance with other senior administration officials, and that he replied: "Hell, no.""

this is such a gross display of prosecutorial misconduct. this "scandal" is the main reason that support for bush plummeted so much. it was the lead in the "culture of corruption" argument (which has since been dropped after dems were found with cash in thier freezers), and has been a huge distraction for the bush administration for the past 3 years.

the question needs to be asked..what did fitzgerald know...and when did he know it? he has known for three years and neither rove nor cheney was the leaker and he still had gone ahead with this investigation...dragging people up in front of grand juries all the time. This has of course been a huge embarrasment for the bush administration. Now we find out that it has been a huge waste of time and of taxpayer money.

after 3 years...the only thing we have is libby charged with lying. think about that...there was NO crime before the investigation started. fitzgerald should be strung up.

No convictions?

NO WONDER Bush appointed him to investigate. You've made this all too clear. Allow me to grab my tinfoil hat and contact Daily Kos...
