"People tend to forget that the office suites encompass a hell of a lot more than word processing.

I use OpenOffice just because I'm too broke/cheap to pay for Office, but I have to admit that the interface is pretty shitty. All of our lectures in 1st/2nd year were Powerpoint slide sets, and the OpenOffice version of that is a total pain in the ass to use.

"

How the hell did you get people forgetting that office suites are more than word processing from what I said? I didn't mention open office's presentation or database software because they suck. Word processing and spreadsheets are the only things that openoffice is passable at.

^^whats that?

^you can make pretty decent Powerpoint presentations on Open Office, and it will automatically generate handouts for distribution, which is great for those who teach

haha

the people who compare OpenOffice with MS Office are the same kind of people who think Linux is a good desktop OS in its current state.

I was talking about OpenOffice's few strengths. Mentioning the weakest programs in OpenOffice is counterproductive to that end. That in no way applies I don't consider them a vital part of a truly complete office suite. For that matter, anyone who considers open office as a truly complete suite is out of their mind. It's an alright word processor and passable spreadsheet attatched to some shitty sub par MS Office clone programs.

I don't even know why I'm responding to this, as its obvious your trolling but OpenOffice, like Linux, isn't for everyone. Linux is a good desktop OS depending upon what you are doing. If you use specialized/ancient hardware, use specialized/in house coded apps, or are a heavy gamer then Linux is not for you. However if all you do is surf the web, listen to music, watch movies, email, and other basic stuff like that Linux is a great OS. Not to mention that most distros are above and beyond OS X/Windows as far as features are concerned. You can even get some Windows apps working through Wine with a little work. If I could only get EVE working through Wine, I woud ditch Windows altogether.

+1 to MS Office 2007 beta2. I've been using it for months and haven't had any complaints switching from Office 2003. I don't have much experience with OpenOffice to say much though.

Disagree. Linux is just packed with third party software, and the same third party software or other freeware alternatives can be stuck on a Windows box.

Alright, now I like open office but the new equation editor in Word is pretty damn nice. I'll probably be doing all my nuke lab writeups in Beta 2007 now.

Dont mean to get off topic here but gotta disagree with you there bud. Some distro's are production quality and are even used/supported by some top tech companies. Been using only ubuntu for almsot a year, have only run into a few minor problems (driver related stuff) and all just required some minor work arounds. Linux is not ready for the non-tech savy but its more than ready for someone who is decent with a computer.

have you used vista yet? How can they feel good charging an assload for that POS. it may look pretty but its a step back IMO. [/rant]

one stickler tho - if you like to play games then linux is lacking. that'll change soon enough tho.
