i'm going to have to see it again before i make any final judgements.

this is only the second time that is happened to me with a scorsese movie...i loved "the aviator", "gangs oif new york", "goodfellas", "raging bull", "taxi driver", and hell even "the color of money" the first time i saw them. i still have reserved my judgements until i see "bringing out the dead" again.

leo di caprio will definitely get an oscar nomination for this movie. so far i think he has a great chance of getting it, but that does depend on what else comes out this year.

jack nicholson was good, not quite "the shining" or "one flew over the cucoos' nest" good, but still very close and still very entertaining.

matt damon was good in some parts but overall i think his character/performance would have been better if occasionaly he lashed out in anger or showed some kind of extreme emotions. i think that would have balanced out the performances of the two main characters but maybe scorsese wanted the mood of their performances to be imbalanced. thats just something i'll have to think about when i see it again.

as far as movie making, i loved the iris in/out transitions. i'm in a film history to 1940 class now and we've seen the iris transition in multiple films. i loved seeing it used in a contemporary movie.

seeing it the first time i really didn't pay attention to cinematography and editing too much, so the next time i see it i'll be able to give that the attention it deserves and maybe make me appreciate the movie more.

I didn't like the version of "Comfortably Numb" Was it a live version? It was a great choice of song just a bad version haha.

I thought the psycholoigist woman was an unrealistically weak character.

I can explain more, but want to make sure someone agrees or wants to know more before I post **Spoilers**.

In movies like this, women rarely have an interesting or important role, so that wasn't very surprising to me.

it just bothered me that she is a cop psychologist, yet has Zero will power or professionalism and was one of the more fucked up people in the movies.

While very attractive, I have to belief they "dumbed her down" on purpose. That took away from her character tremendously. How ironic that the shrink is the most internally conflicted of all the characters.

Best movie I've seen all year. Based on the asian movie, "Infernal Affairs". But, I thought this one was just phenomenal. Don't get me wrong. I thought the original was great, but asian actors suck (If it makes you feel better, I'm asian). It's just the truth. This version was directed much better.

i believe costello was tipping the FBI off on his business competition...whoever that might be, i don't think they went too deeply into that.

iris in/out transition is the only thing close enough i could think of to describe the trick used in the movie. its used by a filmmaker to draw the audiences attention to a certain detail during a scene or as a transition between scenes. in the old days filmmakers would put this resizeable cone piece on the end of the camera that would create a circle of action on the screen and everything else would be black or some contrasting color. you can either resize the cone while the camera is rolling to make the "hole" of action grow smaller or larger in real time on screen or you can have the "hole" stay the same size throughout the whole shot (this is what they did in the departed). in this movie i think it was used twice, once when leo was going into a building (i think) and i can't remember the other time.

I'm guessing the loud punk music was the Dropkick Murphies (that would go with the whole Irish thing)? Personally I liked that... actually seemed to fit perfectly. And yes, I know... Google. Too lazy.

Do they really kill people to "Gimme Shelter"?

Cause that's a hallmark of a great movie right there. Particularly if it's just a straight montage of a couple dozen guys gettin merked.

Ooooooooo, a storm is threatening my very life today...

^ I don't think they're that similar.

It didn't have that Sam Mendes long shot before shit went down, he was just caught off guard (besides, you knew Damon had to get it before the end).

The thing with Leo, though, well, I could see that being close.

It's Leo's kid. Don't you remember, when the chick and Matt Damon and sex and she told him it was okay, it happened to lots of peope, and then while they were in the porno movie theatre, he kept looking down at his crotch? Damon couldn't get it up

that's pretty obvious, he's been in like 3 scorsese movies in a row.

and he's set to play teddy roosevelt in another scorsese movie.

********spoiler*********

^^i figured he killed him for revenge for leo and/or because he found out or figured damon was the mole. maybe that mysterious envelope to the chick said tell mark wahlberg about this shit

Yeah...I think it's Leo's kid too...but Damon had to get it up at some point. I mean...you're wife won't tell you she's pregnant with your kid if you didn't drop a load in her at least once. That wouldn't make sense.

the in/out iris thing keefus was talking about seemed to me to go along with the theme of "when you are facing a loaded gun..." The iris closing in made it seem as you were looking down the barrell of a gun at the person.

but overall, excellent, excellent movie. the most intense i have seen in a long time. scorcese is a god.

I think people with ED can still ejaculate but im not sure on that, im no doctor.

Also he could have premature ejaculation problems and thats what she was referring to when she said it "happens to lots of people" and maybe he was looking down at his pants because he was dripping seminal fluid the minute he walked into the porn theater.

It makes sense that Damon had SOME type of sexual problem cause lord knows an attractive guy making that kind of money and having that sweet of a bachelor pad wouldnt be trying to move that relatively unattractive girl into his apartment. He might fuck her sure especially if she's a freak, but move in together? That was a real stretch...

Otherwise awesome movie, but yeah its pretty common for the female to be a wet blanket in cool movies.

If you guys want a movie with girl power try Erin Brockovich you closet cases.

What an entertaining movie! Definitely one of my favs this year and im not a Scorsese fan. Why did he put that dumbass "no thank you" line in there. Not that it ruined the movie at all but it really took me out of the movie. I choose to see this over Matador but I really wasnt in a Pedro mood.
