Is there seriously someone above the age of 18 who doesn't understand what a "hold" or "pending" on your check card is??? Ny pizza isn't the only place that does this, although I would have a hard time believing he threw something in your face, maybe he threw it in the trash and that was within 10 feet of your face. 8/25/2006 2:33:46 PM |

Bingo.
Just by reading your account from how you went into the store I could almost guarantee no matter how much of a perfect civilized person you thought you were being you had an attitude. Then on top of that you demanded that A) He dig through old reciepts from yesterday to find yours B) that he give you the contact information for his merchant account and C) that he give you the contact information for YOUR credit card.
Remember that if you have a dispute as to the charges on your card, the people you need to talk to are the people who process your card, i.e. the customer service number on the back of the card.
Furthermore, you really should have known better, if you've never seen this happen before then clearly you don't check your bank statements that often and certainly don't understand what a hold is and you didn't read the information presented on your bank's website about how a hold works.8/25/2006 2:34:30 PM |

Actually, that won't make a bit of difference. Even if you get a health inspector in there, IIRC, that only docks 4-5 points. At worst, they will lose 1-2 hours worth of business.

I'm 95% sure you had exceeded this guy's time he was willing to spend with a customer over a $1.00 charge he knew you were wrong about. Probably would have taken him too much time to look it up.
Quote : | "not grounds for him to throw anything at me" |
Agreed. That's poor business practice. However, you are a single customer out of several hundred. Unless you have some power to influence how well that business does / how profit flows into it (not likely), they won't care. See Gumby's for reference.8/25/2006 3:05:57 PM |

i am not disputing the fact that i was ignorant to the hold process. i am wrong on that end so those posts need not continue. However, i did not raise my voice or curse until the guy (who was standing 3 feet from me on the other side of the counter) threw the shit. While i would never press charges for something so stupid, this guy definitely has a temper issue.
^im not a martyr or anything like that but the wolfweb is a nice place to start as far as public influence considering IHEARTNYP's customer base goes.

This is common in the restaurant business.
The credit card company takes the amount of your meal, we'll call it X, and they do the following:
Amt Authorized = X * 1.2
This allows them to do the verification to allow for tip without you being over your limit. This is NOT a charge but just an authorization.
When the restaurant submits it's receipts with the actual amounts to the credit card companies the amount you signed to pay is processed and charged.
MANY people are unaware of this process and assume they are being fucked. I can tell you from being a restaurant manager that it is annoying as hell. If there's a lesson to be learned, it's "don't assume". 8/25/2006 3:14:34 PM |

The solution is - #1: Go to Amore's or somewhere else, not that shitty ass NYP place. #2: Use a CREDIT not a DEBIT card if you don't have four dollars on hand. Let Visa put a hold on it's own money all month if they feel like it. 8/25/2006 4:49:34 PM |

yeah I had dinner in a restaurant in NY once and the service was sooo awfulI did not tip. I had to call the manager and everything. However my bill was 40 something and I was charged 50 something. THat's when I found out. I thought the waiter wrote in his own tip or something. Since then, I've noticed it happens frequently 8/25/2006 5:29:27 PM |

I think you should go back and apologize to him, too.
I mean, you were completely WRONG, and you started off being accusatory towards him. It's natural reaction to become defensive in that case.
Also, here's another idea for future stuff like this:
Don't hawk over your goddamned online banking shit, especially if you don't understand EXACTLY how the pre-authorization and post-authorization systems work. Use a bank book to keep track of your purchases. Online banking shows pre-auths, and depending on the bank, they have different expiry periods. I cant count the number of times people just like you would call and freak because they were "checking their account" and accidentally got pre-auth'd twice at my last job and thought we had "charged their card twice." 8/25/2006 10:19:07 PM |

So reading this I was wondering what happens in this situation. Now this is a big "what if" and I don't know about particular bank rules and policies that might affect how this goes down, but say you go eat someplace and the total is $50.00. You have $51.00 in your checking account and decide to use your debit card to pay, while leaving 10 in cash on the table as a tip. Assuming you don't have something setup to take money from savings or some other bank thing to cover overdrafts, etc., does your card get denied? 8/26/2006 12:39:56 PM |

If you're with wachovia, the auth goes through, wachoiva covers the ammount and hits your account for a $30 overdraft fee. When it clears for the real amount, sometimes they remove the fee, sometimes they don't and then you have to go and get it reversed 8/26/2006 2:04:17 PM |

It is NOT the credit card company that is adding the tip addition. The owner has complete and total control of that in the setting on his credit card processing station. He/she can set it to any percentage they want, including 0. If the guy at NYP couldnt explain this to you, he doesnt know what the fuck he is doing.
And before you rebut, I sold and installed Point of Sales for a LOT of restaurants. 8/27/2006 2:26:01 AM |

It's entirely possible he's never bothered to learn that setting or how to change it. If someone else installed and set it up for him they may have just set it for him and left it, but he gave enough of an explination that the kid should have waited to see what would happen when the charge cleared. Ok so the owner was too stupid to know that it was a setting that he could change. By comparison the kid was too stupid to know a) what a hold is and b) the proper procedure for dispute resolution on his card. Act like a jerk and accuse someone of a crime they didn't do and they'll be a jerk right back to you. 8/27/2006 10:53:32 AM |
