WASHINGTON - Stadford Brown is the kind of quarterback who plays his best when the pressure mounts. But it’s been nearly two years since the Dunbar High graduate played in the Washington area. When he lines up under center in a packed Bulldog Stadium on Saturday with plenty of friends and family on hand, it’s going to be tough to contain himself.

“I know they’ve read about me in the papers from down here. I’ve told them about it, but it’s time to actually see it in person,” said Brown, who will make his fifth start of the season for North Carolina Central against Bowie State in the third annual Prince George’s Classic. “I can’t put my guard down and put on a bad show.”

All Brown has done this season is earn rave reviews. The redshirt freshman is the hottest player in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, throwing for a league-leading 857 yards (214.3 per game) and seven touchdowns for the undefeated defending CIAA champions.

The precision passer has been named CIAA rookie of the week three times in four weeks, yet wasn’t supposed to be the starting quarterback entering the season. Adrian Warren led North Carolina Central to the CIAA title and a 10-2 record last year, including two wins over Bowie State, and was set for his fourth season at quarterback for the Eagles before quitting the team during the first week of August.

“I was actually kind of shocked. I didn’t expect him to not come back,” said Brown. “I thought it was going to be more of a battle. When he said that he wasn’t going to return, he gave the job away, basically.”

Three weeks later, Warren changed his mind and returned to the team, but by then it was too late.

“Stadford keeps getting better and better every week,” Eagles coach Rod Broadway told the [Durham] Herald-Sun after Brown completed 12 of 19 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-16 win over Lenoir-Rhyne.

Brown’s success completed a journey back to the football field that was supposed to have had a stop on the West Coast — Brown originally signed with Oregon State but eligibility problems would’ve meant a year at junior college and a brand new recruiting process. Instead, he spent last year on the sidelines.

Dunbar coach Craig Jefferies is one person who’s proud of how far his former quarterback has come and is looking forward to seeing his progress firsthand against the Bulldogs.

“I knew he could do these things because to me he’s a big fish in a little pond right now. I really believe he could be a Pac-10 quarterback,” said Jefferies. “Not to take anything from the CIAA, but they’re lucky to have a guy like him, and it happened to be a good fit for him because socially, and just the maturity level that he had, they helped him grow up a lot.”

THE EVENT: NCCU has won eight straight conference games dating back to Oct. 1, 2005 when Saint Augustine's spoiled the Eagles homecoming 22-8 in O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium. It was NCCU's first home conference loss since November 1, 2003 -- a 17-3 loss against Livingstone.

THE SERIES: This will be the 28th meeting between NCCU and St. Augustine’s dating back to the first match-up in 1924. The Eagles hold a 24-2-1 overall advantage in the series. The tie game occurred on Oct. 9, 1965, a 12-12 final in Raleigh, NC. NCCU has never lost to the Falcons in Raleigh.

LAST WEEK FOR NCCU: (Sept. 30, 2006 - NCCU 35, Bowie State - 13 - Bowie, MD) - North Carolina Central University quarterback Stadford Brown threw for a career-high 291 yards and four touchdowns as NCCU (5-0, 3-0 CIAA) downed Bowie State University (2-3, 0-2) 35-13 in the third annual Prince George’s Classic at Bulldog Stadium in Bowie, Md. Brown, a 6-1 native of nearby Washington, D.C., completed 19-of-35 passes, including four to senior tight end Kenneth Broadway, who recorded career-highs in receptions (four), receiving yards (107) and receiving touchdowns (two). Brown was named the Prince George's Classic Most Valuable Player. NCCU’s passing attack, rated No. 1 in the CIAA in yards per game, proved too much for Bowie State, a defense that coming into the contest allowed only 86.5 yards per game through the air. The Eagle defense held the leading rushing attack in the conference to just 45 yards rushing. NCCU out-gained BSU in total offense, 409-153. NCCU struck first as Brown hit senior wide receiver Charles Futrell in the left corner of the left end zone at Bulldog Stadium for his fifth receiving touchdown of the season. Futrell, the reigning CIAA receiver of the week, had a key 21-yard reception on the drive. His touchdown capped a six-play, 59-yard drive. Junior place-kicker Brandon Gilbert converted the extra point giving NCCU a 7-0 lead with 2:36 remaining in the first quarter.
Futrell caught seven pass for 110 yards and a touchdown, giving him 11 catches for 250 yards and two
touchdowns in his last two games. Just three minutes later, after the NCCU defense forced a BSU three-and-out, Broadway [Kenneth] caught a 51-yard strike from Brown. Gilbert’s extra point gave NCCU a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. NCCU capped off its first-half scoring on a 13-yard screen pass from Brown to senior wide receiver Julius McClellan, finishing an 11-play, 53-yard drive by NCCU, extending its lead to 21-0 after the Gilbert extra point, which gave him NCCU’s career record with 90 PAT kicks. NCCU led 21-7, after a Brown interception was converted into an 18-yard touchdown pass from BSU quarterback Deon Trotter to BSU wide receiver Anthony Green just 16 seconds before intermission.
The NCCU defense harassed Trotter all day as the top-ranked scoring defense in the CIAA held Trotter
to just 108 yards passing as he completed only 10-of-27 attempts. The Eagles defense was led by senior
linebacker Naim Abdul-Malik with five tackles, including 2.5 hits for a loss with a sack. Greg Pruitt, Jr. took a handoff from Brown seven yards for a touchdown with 2:25 left in the third quarter to give NCCU a 28-7 lead. Pruitt, a senior from Cleveland, Ohio, who rushed for 45 yards on 10 carries, now stands just 232 yards from passing Joe Simmons (2,840 yards; 1990-93) as NCCU’s all-time leading rusher. After a Nathaniel Queen two-yard touchdown run for BSU, that came courtesy of an NCCU special teams miscue, NCCU led 28-13 despite allowing only 45 yards to the CIAA’s leading rusher Queen. On the following drive NCCU went 76 yards on 10 plays, to close out the game. Brown, originally looking for Futrell in the left side of the right end zone in Bulldog Stadium, scrambled to his right and found Broadway for a 21-yard touchdown, giving the Eagles their final 35-13 cushion. Gilbert finished the afternoon with five extra-point kicks to bring his three-year career total to 92, topping NCCU's previous record holder Kevin Houston, who made 89 PAT kicks from 1992-95.

Ernie, Im a Wolfpack alum, and Im a diehard NCSU alumnus, but the way the three teams in teh triangle ahve been playing..you should of seen what we did to Division IA Power house Southern University in Baton Rouge(there having a down year this year, b/c there All America wide receiver was hurt two weeks b4 our game..but they had 32 more scholarship players than Central had, adn going into the last 3 minutes of the game the score was NCCU 20 and Southern 3.....luck my friend had NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!

Coming back from the CIAA Championship games..a couple of things I noticed....NCCU needs to recruit some big ass, tobacco chewing, cornhusking white dudes for our offensive line...b/c Elizabeth City State had 4 MAMMOTH White Offensive linemen who were opening up holes for their starting running back...
Elizabeth City will be the Star of the CIAA after this season now that NCCU is moving up to Division One!!

The place was packed and EASILY had close to 20,000 fans there(our stadium only seats 10,000!!), and with our ALL Conference QB having an off day throwing 3 interceptions, the defense, special teams and our All-America Kicker Brandon Gilbert...secured the victory in the final 32 seconds...and after previously missing a 30 yard field goal...Brandon boots a 45 yard field goal to win it...secure the CIAA Championship and HOPEFULLY secure NCCU in getting a first round bye in the NCAA Division II play-offs, and Setting up some PAY-bACK for NORTH ALABAMA!!

Kick ass effort ECSTU...you guys DEFINITELY deserve a berth in the NCAA Division II play-offs, you were the best team we've played ALL SEASON!!!!

The CIAA will probably get two teams into the NCAA DII play-offs being that Newberry was shut out at home....and no NCCU has decided not to move into the MEAC, they are trying to move into the conference which Appalachian STate is in...but they have to wait for an invitation...so next year they will be classified as an D1 independent school...FUCKING ACE!!!!!

Eight first-round games will be conducted on the campus of one of the competing institutions. In addition, two teams per region have earned first-round byes. The first-round winners will all advance to face a bye team in their region in the second round on the campus of one of the competing institutions. Second-round winners will meet in the quarterfinals at various campus sites. Quarterfinal winners will advance to play in the semifinals on the campus of one of the competing institutions. Six teams selected per region make up the field of 24 teams.

The 2006 championship will mark 21 consecutive years that the Division II championship game has been played in Florence. In addition, both semifinal games will be played on Sunday, December 10. Kick-off will be at either 5:30 p.m. Eastern time or 7 p.m. Eastern time and will air on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.
