Well, so here is the thought process now......
Get an S4 now b/c I should save some $$, and get an M3 a bit later after I make some more $$$
But now the question is, should I get an 02 S4 that has a bit higher mileage??? That way if there were problems any of the turbo problem they would have most likely already surfaced, and I could avoid it?
^ Yeah the new S4's with the V8 4.2L are sweeeeeet, but I don't think I can afford them I have to get the older V6 versions

Anyone had experience with the B5 S4?" |
1. Probably the biggest issue, although there are a lot fewer cars killing off turbos than there were a couple years ago...
Diverter valves can be replaced ~200 -300 for the pair
TBBs can be resolved with a samco/silicone tbb ~80 or the apr bipipe ~300
F hoses are cheap in silicone ~20 if I remember correctly
2. Tranny issues, not much you can do about that one, short of the obvious, if it has transmission problems wait hold out for one that doesnt unless you want to rebuild/replace
3. MAFs go bad just like practically every other VAG car...9/7/2006 2:00:24 PM |

I just got an s4. Its a really fun car but there is always shit to worry about. This is what Ive seen on mine in the short time ive had it.
#1 MAF sensor-$125 bucks causing me hell because without it it puts me in EPC fault which means the car runs horrible. #2 timing belt-they say 60k miles on this car for a timing belt and you should do other work while youre in there (water pump, seals, roller, tensioner) $1k from absoluteautomotive in durham #3 CV boot yuck #4 gauge cluster- matrix lines were fucked up but the dealer replaced this
Other little issues but these were the most pressing There is also a really good community out there for the s4 check out http://www.audiworld.com
Also, I heard they stopped manufacturing the K04 so that might be hard to come by and if this is a tiptronic car forget the killer torque (torque converter is only good to ~310 ft-lb) from either a chip or new turbos 9/15/2006 11:53:14 AM |

it seems to me that more and more car manufacturers are moving away from the "standard manual" and more towards something closer to an automatic - a lot of luxury cars have clutchless manuals and it's starting to trickle down slowly to the more cost-affordable cars

bmw's SMG is the just about equivalent of an automatic with a "sports shifter"/tiptronic or whatever the manufacturer decides to call it
same with audi's DSG
i'm missing your point beethead - what's the difference again? you can't blow the engine on the automatics with the manual mode because they have built in safety precautions to auto shift ~100rpm before the redline? i haven't checked out the DSG/SMG/etc to see if they have this built-in but i'd be willing to bet they do.... 9/15/2006 4:12:11 PM |

SMG's and DSG's are nothing like tiptronic 'sportshift' transmissions.
Those employ a torque converter.
In SMG, there's a computer controlle clutch. 9/15/2006 4:35:13 PM |

hahahah go home, put some gel in your hair, put some more fake wood on the dash of your car... i dunno do anything but say that again
that is pretty much saying that f1 cars have torque converters

the difference is how the power is transferred from the engine crank into the transmission.

exactly an automagic as alot more drivetrain loss. but with an unlocked converter can allow the engine to rev up higher without the transmission spinning with it. which is benaficial for say a 1000hp turbo supra honda what ever that has no power until the turbo spools at whatever rmp.
