our apartment is freezing, but i wear more clothes or cuddle with a blanket and adam pays more of the power bill



i will admit that it has to be cold for me to sleep, i can't stand sleeping when it is warm, and adam's temp is perfect for sleepingcc

You were saying that it "feels" like 85 degress. Humans are horrible thermometers. You should think about getting a digital thermometer and situating it in the middle of the room away from other surfaces to guage the actual temperature differential.

I had my fill of roommates who like freezing. Temperature is actually something I make very clear to potential future roommates.

probably more true, dunno offhand, but turning it down at night is different, as the house is no longer getting heated by the sun and it's cooler outside allowing for much reduced operation for the same effect

I would start looking for somewhere else to live if there's no lease holding you back. If there is a lease, go through it and see what it says about what you need to pay since it seems you have special circumstances surrounding that, maybe you can use that for getting your way in a compromise? I wouldn't want to live with people who show a lack of concern for what you want, compromising is a good thing, if they dont want to then living with them probably won't be as enjoyable.

All I'm gonna say it my last semester at NC State, I lived with some toolbag who would seriously get up at 1:00am and jam the AC *all the way cold*, literally, so it was set to about 50 degrees F and the AC would not cut off until I woke up shivering cold and put it back around 74 where it needed to be.

We did this back and forth all semester and never said a word to each other about it (it was my last semester, I knew I was outta there soon) but I seriously wanted to slam his face into an oncoming Mack truck every night I woke up in what felt like the South Pole.

Moral of story: "68-70" is too cold. Get a fan.

since I have been living in hotels for about 14 months straight now, I tend to keep the AC on all the time, but of course I dont have to worry about it.

When i was in college the house i rented just had AC units in the room, luckily, the year I was there the summer was not extremely hot. You do get use to it after awhile though.(there were 8 of us living there), big old house.

other than the options above, go to home depot and buy one of those plastic heavy duty covers with a key lock, like the ones you see in large offices, restraunts, where people cant screw with it......drill it into a stud over the unit, set it to 70, and throw the one key in the fire and watch it melt with happiness.

i know what its like to have a hot room upstairs, it sucks, easily 15-20 degress hotter upstairs than downstairs. if you close the vents downstairs they all whistle really loud

Definately close all the vents downstairs, it'll make the downstairs warmer than normal, so maybe they'll even turn it down themselves if they're not observant and just open them back up.

As far as keeping itt reasonable in your room goes, if that doesnt work, just get a window AC unit and then crank the AC downstairs up to the 78-80 they apparently want - seeing as how your rent is the utility bill.

If that doesnt work, lock box it as suggested. I nearly did this once with one roomate who thought 80 was nice and comfortable where as I sincerely prefer under 70- I'd been willing to compromise around 75 but it kept getting cranked up to 80+ and it pissed the shit out of me.

Just turn it down on your own jesus, you think they're going to kick you out from touching the air conditioning? What are you a pussy? Really, you pay your share, and it's inhuman to leave it so hot. Hot air travels upwards upstairs, you know. Don't complain just change it on your own till they get the point talk to you about it. Write a plan of action and an explanation for when the time comes

And, no don't be a dumbass and move out, you're throwing away a perfectly good housing situation for the winter. A few months away, you'll live. Some people have to stand up for themselves, it comes with being an vertebrate species

our townhome only has one ac unit for 2 floors and closing ALL the vents downstairs, putting curtains on the windows and having fans upstairs works for us. its still cooler downstairs than upstairs,even with all the vents closed.
