I thought the 80GB model was on top of the 60GB one, but it actually replaces it.

In that case it is silly to have two models, 30GB and 80GB.

They should have replaced the 30GB model with a 40GB one. Or they should have done 30/60/90.

Quote :
"I always thought the iPod Mini was a bastard-child of the iPod - the brushed metal, the overly-rounded sides, but most of all, that awful "sharp" edge along the top and bottom..... i dunno, it just didn't feel polished to me, like the regular iPod and the 1st gen Nanos. With the sharp edges along the top and bottom, there are really 3 distinct surfaces on the Mini/New Nano. I prefer the slightly rounded edges and corners around the whole device, making it feel like there's only one surface. "

I completely agree with that. Such a pity that they reverted back to that styling.

Also, no more white in the nano. It has been replaced by a grey/silver.

Also, it is very stupid and illogical that the nanos are available in different colors DEPENDING on capacity:

2 GB: silver
4 GB: silver, green, cyan, magenta
8 GB: black

I completely fail to see the logic behind this. What the hell is up with that?

forces you to pay more for the sleekest of the lot (black)

besides, unless you get the nano free like their recent sale...there is no reason to buy one....ipod video is the way to go

Yeah I already have a 60GB video (for which I paid $531) which I bought at the beginning of the year... BUT, I hate anything that is illogical. Hence, my rant

yeah, sucks for us, but it's brilliant for apple. just like the MacBook, Apple knows that people are willing to pay a premium for black.

I too hate this. With the MacBook, I can see how Apple places the black as the "elite" model, but here it really makes no sense.

Case in point: I was all set to buy a pink 8GB for the wifey, but no, Apple doesn't offer it. I'm not going to buy my wife a black iPod just to get her 8GB, but I'm not about to drop money on a 4GB unit when I know she'd need more space than that. Here the black upselling just doesn't compute, and I can bet you I'm not alone.

I bet the release the color 8GB in a few months. The 8GB chips are probably in low supply or something.

^^^^ yeah, that's true..... i wonder if they'd make more money overall if they offered the 8GB in all colors.

and ^, that's probably true too. they love staggering their releases probably b/c they get a ton of people making duplicate purchases. Some people will just "have" to have 8GB now and they might want it in blue, but they'll get the black anyway. Then when they release a blue 8GB, they'll probbaly buy that one too.

uhh no they don't....

For some reason the new ipods are not discounted and the pricing on the academic store is the same as the retail store.

Doing away with the student discount on the ipod seems really assholish to me. Hopefully it's just a "while they're new" thing. Since they are now all cheaper than what the items they're replacing were even discounted, this may be a permanent death to student pricing on ipods.

u sure? cause i remember getting a discount on my ipod video (60gb)...maybe its just the brand new ipods now...cause when i got the video i got it first week it was out with 10% off....but i think you are limited to how many ipods you can buy a year with a discount....just like 1 desktop/year, 1 laptop/year etc

Actually it applied to pretty much everything apple-branded but it wasn't quite a set percent. That means yes, apple earbuds, apple power adapters, apple cases, etc. have always been discounted for students as well.

Those accessory discounts are still in place.

Well, that's because I am not in the US. I was ready to pay $573 at a computer store, but luckily, I found it for $531 at a bookstore. I heard they were going for $700 at some posh stores. This was back in January. By April/May, the price had come down to $440 (as compared to $400 in the US). They were so expensive in January, because that's when they had just arrived here (the iPod video). The photos were going for cheaper, around $450. So now, when the 80GB model comes here, I bet it will be priced in the beginning at around $500 at least (price will come down in a few months), even though they only cost $350 in the US, $50 less than the outgoing 60GB model.

80GB is the amount of space I have on my laptop.

I only have an old 20GB iPod, and it doesn't even come close to holding all my music.

Only for the old accesories, the new ones do not have student discounts and none of the iPods have them old or new anymore.

They're already discounted across the board. 119, 149 and 199 for the 1, 2 and 4 gig models respectively.

1.5-2 years.

How about a 150GB Nano (flash based)?

About 10 years.

No way it will take ten years for 100+GB flash based mp3 players. I say 3-4 tops. Moore's law for flash based storage has shown a size doubling once every 12 months. They are already producing 64GB Compact flash cards that will hit the market in early '07. 128GB flash based media is less than a year away and there's no way it will take much more than 2-3 years for the costs to get low enough to put in an mp3 player. Of course by that time the idea of carrying around a device that only plays mp3s will be laughable. Hell, it's almost laughable at this point.

edit to provide a link, so I don't sound like I'm talking out of my ass like 0ep up there.

^ it is not really about the capacity, but about cost. doesn't the 64GB flash USB disk cost like $8,000?

i think it will take at least 5-7 years for costs to be low enough (~ $300) for there to be a 150GB flash based iPod.

First you said 10, and now you're saying 5-7 with the stipulation of a sub $300 pricepoint.

Way to back-peddle there.

I still say 3-4 with a more reasonable pricepoint (i.e <$500)

I think you need more mother's milk.

I don't see how

about 10 years

AND

at least 5-7 years

are incompatible with each other. Obviously, you are only looking at my numbers without looking at the key words before those numbers.

And what so unreasonable about a <$300 price point? If you think iPods are going to get more expensive in the future (based on your <$500 price point), then I wonder who is more idiotic amongst us.

ANYWAY, IT IS ALL SPECULATION, SO LET'S STOP THIS E-FIGHTING. I AM OFF TO HAVE MY LINNER (LUNCH + DINNER). ADIOS.

I never claimed the 128GB version would be the baseline model. I'd imagine by the time they have $500 128GB versions, you'd be able to pick up a 64 GB version for ~$200.

I was just saying your time estimates were way off. And you've done nothing to convince me otherwise. And I would say you're going about it in all the wrong ways if you're trying to convince me that 10 is the same thing as 5-7.

ummm I don't want a item that has more 'features' but does none of them well....

it's like getting a cheap swiss army knife, it might have 101 functions on it and cost the same as a 20 feature real one but when it's blades snap off or the thing falls apart just how valuable is it now?

I'd rather pay a little more and get GOOD functions rather than MORE functions
