in my experience, after having one that lasted over a year and a half, i say they are pretty much nothing but agony and not worth the effort unless you both plan on being in the same location later. even after we were together in the same city, the damage was pretty much done and we never fully recovered a year later down the road.
it just gets to the point where all you do is miss the person and then when you see them, it creates this false sense of perfection when youre together.
i mean ive known people that have made it work, but starting off in different cities is not the best idea. i guess some people like the idea of having their own daily life that doesn't involve the other person, but it's not all that realistic of a relationship IMHO 9/12/2006 6:57:01 PM |

i am currently in a LDR. I have been with my boyfriend for 3 1/2 years and we have been long distance for a year. I think its completely doable. It was really hard for me to adjust to it at first because I really miss spending time with him and doing just the types of things you take for granted when you are in the same location. It also did not help that we lived together the year before we were apart so we went from 24/7 basically to once a month.
However, I find that I am getting more comfortable with the idea because we both are busy doing things that we really want to do and it has also helped me to become more independent. I really look foward to our weekends that we spend together and when we are together it doesn't seem like we have been apart for a while, which I think is good. I was afraid we would start to grow apart without the day to day things in common.
Also webcameras are great! we spend time every night talking to each other just about our day. And its nice to get to actually see him. And it helps I know that we will be in the same town when we finish with school, and I feel really confident about that.

I dated a guy for 3 years.. went distance and it cracked in less than a year... seeing each other about twice a semester just didn't cut it...
I now find myself once again in a distance relationship.. but GA is as far as MO so I have hopes.. Plus the guy is not the loser the other one was 9/12/2006 9:00:15 PM |

Ok, virginia wolf, I'm going to apologize, I feel really unjust by what I said about going after tail on the internet. Online bitch hunting's serious stuff, and people with lowerd expectations should wing it harder, because it will lead to a more meaningful relationship, not like those online jokes. 9/12/2006 9:35:42 PM |

My relationship now started out long distance. About a month after we started dating, he moved 200 miles away. I doubt either of us really had incredibly high hopes for it to last, but here we are almost 2 years later and now we live together. I think the year and a half that was long distance helped our relationship to get through that tough "new" relationship crap. We weren't all over each other and we never even got the opportunity to get sick or bored with one another. It wasn't the ideal situation, but it worked for us, and I think as long as both people are looking to the future then it can work. 9/12/2006 9:50:57 PM |
