[NO]

While whining/snapping at the media generally isn't a good thing, especially when you are losing, Herb was hardly a master of public relations. When speaking with the media, a coach should know how to speak to his fan base. Herb's display of an utter lack of passion, and at times a contempt for the fanbase that had it, was almost as bad from a PR standpoint.

That article regarding written by the Akron guy is interesting. NC State is a much better school academically than Akron so comparing graduation rates isn't exactly comparing apples to apples. Chuck started it all so it's his damn fault, but Akron is not an ACC caliper academic institution.

On another note--why were ACC officials calling the game? I thought in non-conference games you used the travelling teams conference officials?

You're kidding right?

This wasn't some unprovoked jab at NCSU. This was in response to a very assinine and never should have been said comment by a nimwits coach.

Quote :
" What's the deal with "asinine"? I'm curious about both the development of the word (from "ass," dropping an "s" with the "-inine" ending) and the usage. "Asinine" seems to have a respectability that "ass" doesn't. It seems that saying "that's an asinine suggestion" is as confrontational but not as vulgar as "that's the kind of suggestion an ass would make."

Your question raises several issues.

We can start with the most direct one, the derivation of asinine. Asinine has two senses: 'unintelligent; stupid; silly', and 'of or like an ass [donkey]'; the word is pronounced like ASS-uh-nine.

This word does not stem directly from ass with a suffix -inine. Rather, it comes from Latin asinínus, from asinus 'ass [donkey]' and the suffix -ínus, an adjective-forming suffix meaning 'of, pertaining to, or characteristic of', equivalent to English -ine (as in Alpine, crystalline, or, closest to our question, equine). This explains the single-s spelling of asinine and the ending, though it's a good question--when I first encountered the word I thought it was "ass o'nine," was stumped by a new word for a multi-stranded whip meaning 'foolish'.

Asinine is also, as you point out, more respectable than ass. There are several reasons for this, but a prominent one is the confusion between the two ass words. The one we've been discussing chiefly means 'a donkey', with a derived sense of 'a stupid, foolish, or stubborn person'; it is from Old English, probably borrowed from Latin asinus (mentioned above) by way of Old Irish. The other one means 'the buttocks; the rectum' and is from the word arse (still the standard form in Britain) with a loss of r before s as in passel, cuss, bust, etc.; it's related to similar words in other Indo-European languages.

The word ass 'donkey' has become increasingly offensive over the last few hundred years because of the pronunciation of ass 'the buttocks': as the latter word underwent a change in pronunciation from arse to something closer to ass, the original ass 'donkey/fool' became less appropriate, and donkey became more common. In America, where the 'buttocks' word has pretty much always been ass, ass 'a stupid person' has always been somewhat more offensive than in England.

Since asinine avoids the association with ass 'buttocks', it is less offensive than ass itself, and asinine is not vulgar at all. The other reasons that asinine is less offensive than ass are that the former is Latinate, and thus seems more respectable; and that describing any particular decision, action, etc. by an adjective is less offensive than referring to the person who made that decision with its equivalent noun. For example, if you substitute words in your example, you'll see that "that's a foolish suggestion" is much less offensive than "that's the sort of suggestion a fool would make." "

A failure to say the buck stops here is interestingly enough the problem both Herb and Chuck at times share(d). I just want a coach that exudes passion, knows when to speak (and when to keep his mouth shut), and takes responsibility when appropriate. Early indications are that Lowe may fit this mold. I hope Chuck can learn these lessons, at least as long as he is our coach.

that response had nothing to do with akron beating nc state. it has nothing to do with being a "sore winner". it was a direct response to the comments amato made that he shouldn't have.

No. Not really. You would think he could avoid comments like that irregardless if he was goaded into them or not. Sure Amato deserves criticism but why address the matter in a sore loser fashion when even a 4 year old kid knows that Amato's comments were out of place. I don't need a scathing article to show me that the comments were unfounded and irresponsible. I've moved past those stupid comments, it would be nice if others would as well but why do that when you can continue to beat us while we're down.

In short:

In Chuck's defense, he has often been quoted saying things are his fault and not to blame the players. Realistically speaking, despite all his brashness, he has been pretty good about not saying something this stupid in regards to why the team performed so poorly.

You've never ever once made any comments about a Greg Doyel article in re. of NCSU? I think it is completely appropriate for a write from Ohio to respond to accusations from some podunk coach in NC about his local school.

^^I'll argue against that point to the death. They'll probably never beat another opponent of our calibre (even if you think our team isn't that great, it's a pretty safe bet they've never won a bigger game), and they want to talk some shit. Yes, I agree that Chuck shouldn't have said that, but they're being asses about it regardless.

I don't think people would even be making a big deal about this if he simply said that Akron is a good team (even mentioning the non-qualifier who was recruited by Ohio State as a reason). I know I wouldn't have.

But his dumbass had to bring in 3 other schools, without even knowing the facts, to the conversation. If he was really just trying to say that Akron was a good program (which is what people seem to think he was doing) then he should have never mentioned Boise, Fresno, and Louisville. THAT is why the national media is talking about it now.

^ how the hell are they being asses? A god damn reporter wrote a story, using facts, to dispel what Amato said. It's not like the head coach is talking shit... or the players... or anyone associated with the school.

Personally, I know that reporters bait people in interviews. I remember a couple of years ago when a News and Observer journalist came up to me at Reynolds during a ticket distribution for State/UNC basketball. This was after we'd beaten UNC 4 straight times in the last 2 years and the reporter asked me something like:

"Do you think State can pull another upset against UNC in basketball this year?"

My answer: "I don't know what you mean by upset. We've beaten them 4 straight times during their worst 2 seasons in 3 decades and we finished last season #2 in the ACC. I think we are the ones with the bulls eye on the back."

My quote didn't get in the paper.

You lost.

Look, you're upset that the team sucks now. It's ok, you have been sold the unrealistically high expectations that everyone else has and you want more in return for your "payment". But your anger is misplaced and needs to be directed at the coach that started this mess. You are only continuing to look foolish by not doing so.

Look, this is just stupid. You claimed that they were being sore winnners because a reporter (who has NOTHING to do with the school or team whatsoever -- hell we have no idea if he is even a fan of the school) wrote a story, backed up by facts, in response to Chuck's ramblings on non-qualifiers.

^^sorry, no. I'm upset that we lost, I could care less to whom. Every shit team in the NCAA is going to pull off a big upset once in their history (and if we are their big upset, which their press seems to claim, they're aiming pretty low). They are still not good enough to play in the ACC and win more than a game a season, and I can almost bet that we'd beat them the next 10 times we played if that were the case (and yes, it's a hypothetical, but unfortunately there's nothing I can do to prove the point). They played better on Saturday, got a couple of beneficial calls, and won. As I said before, now they can go back to their pussy opponents and we can start to focus on what we need to do to win THIS week.

^A. Chuck did not insinuate that the refs gave them any calls, which constituted an entire section of their tirade. Chuck rightfully stated that the call was questionable and that he wanted to challenge, but couldn't. In regards to non-qualifiers, Chuck was going based on what he thought were facts, so does that make his comments just as justified as this rant?
B. If we won the game and our fans (and/or local reporters, since it's not obvious to you that this guy is a UA homer) were writing columns about how we're hot shit and Akron's not (regardless if it's supported by "facts"), would we not be sore winners? I dare say that the fans of a team can be considered sore losers or winners just as the team and its staff can.

In regards to this comment. If our media and fans acted in this way unprovoked, then yes, it would be sore loser syndrome and just as tacky as the current mess we are in. Had the Akron coach made some pretty inflammatory remarks about the our school or the ACC, then I'd fully expect a reply from our fans and media, especially if the facts are on our side.

This isn't sore winnerism, this is you being a sore loser still. Get over yourself.

I'm not disagreeing with that but I would ask him about how many Akron players went in the first round of the NFL draft.

PLus, they don't have as many players transferring to smaller schools in order to get playing time or because they failed out due to strong academic requirements.

You lose. This is one of Chuck's major downfalls and one of the main reasons that he would probably make a better politician than football coach. He hardly ever takes credit for his team's mistakes. He is all about sugar coating things and making them seem good when they really aren't. Just like when he pointed out that Stone is 6-1 as a starter, but we know that that has a lot to do with the running game and our defense. When we lost to OSU 3 years ago, he pointed out what a great game it was and that Phil is a tall guy and should have been able to score on 3 consecutive QB sneaks, rather than saying that they should have gone to TA or mixed up the plays some more. Real men take credit for their mistakes and move on. Chuck should just avoid the media for a while.

He has been known to say "if only this one play wouldn't have happened to turn the momentum, or gosh golly, we almost had em", but I have heard MANY many times over the past couple years him clearly say "don't talk bad about my players, talk bad about me, I'll take the blame for all this".

I'm not going on a long search and digging up tons of examples for you, but here is a reference to one of them, from last year in about 15 seconds of googling:

"And since Amato said he wanted to take the blame Saturday, he should be given it."

After Clemson in 04

Quote :
""It's amazing we even had a shot at the end of the game," said a dejected NC State head coach Chuck Amato. "Give that credit to the kids for not quitting. When you have two touchdowns taken away because of penalties, that's our fault; it's not the kid's fault. I'll take the blame for that. I'm a big man and I'll take the blame for that.""

The thing that's always irked me about Amato is that (^^True) he always says "Blame me... it's my fault" blah blah blah.... so we blame him. Thing is, 99% of the time he doesn't do anything about them. I blamed him for the penalties and turnovers every game last year like he told me to.... didn't help

What's really awesome about all of this is that Akron's win was newsworthy only on Saturday, but thanks to Chuck the Fuck, now the win and the fallout of his comments means it will be newsworthy until atleast this Saturday. On which, I'm sure we'll lose and Chuck will blame Brett Favre or something and then draw more unwanted attention to our shit hole team.

And this weekend is a truly great weekend in college football, but we're all talking about some dumbass comments Chuck made. WTF??

this is getting out of hand

I think the way Chuck said it and meant it, he was almost giving it as a compliment saying how good of a team they were, not trying to call them out, but saying that they like other PQ teams had really good talent that alot of people might not realize.

the media(who woulda known) has just taken this thing and blown it completely out of proportion.

The only way i really see that Chuck can save face is by dominating the rest of the games this year and saying in a statement what he truly meant by the PQ line.

no way we would beat Boise, although they arent as good this year in any way shape or form.
