My brother graduated in NE in the Spring and my sister is there now...Maria. Don't know if you have seen her.
My best advice is what is done is done. I would take the advice from above and say that you are going on a family vacation. I can't tell you how many I missed out on cause I was in school and now I am sad that I did because my brothers and sisters grew up and I wasn't there. 9/13/2006 4:02:06 PM |

why would your family schedule a family vacation during the time they know you are in school? 9/13/2006 4:04:56 PM |

The reasoning with mine was that all of the school breaks didn't line up and so they went with the most family that could come. They would buy me a ticket for the weekend that was close but I was always like I have too much stuff to do. I am an idiot. 9/13/2006 4:07:33 PM |

ask to take the test anyway, eventhough you know it won't count. I did that once, and aced it....it still didn't count, but @ the end of the semester he let me do an extra project to make it up.(I think b/c I demonstrated that I really knew the material and was serious about the class despite missing the exam).
If I remember correctly, he allowed several students to do the same, provided they scored well on the exam that didn't count. He made me sweat it out though, not telling me that I could do the extra work for make-up until only a few weeks remained in the semester.
It probably won't work out, but it's worth a try. 9/13/2006 4:08:48 PM |

seriously though. having a trip planned by you or someone you know during a test time is not "shit happening." shit happening is you getting in a car accident or the bus blowing up on the way to the exam.
it might not seem like a big deal to you, but why should it be a big deal for him to expect students to have their scheduled class periods available for a test?

Thank your family for the mess you are in. Generally, your parents shouldn't be intefering this much with your personal life at this point (without first talking to you), but that's another matter. Fact is, you took a gamble thinking everything would work out and it didn't.
Live up to the consequences, go on the trip and bust your ass for the remainder of the semester in that class. Nobody is generally going to care if you got a C instead of a B in a course. Will also show instructor you DID have a willingness to do well in the course but his/her lack of flexibility caused your poor performance.9/13/2006 4:11:57 PM |

I see no reason that professor shouldn't bend for you, he'd want exactly the same thing for himself if he were in the same situation.
I'd ask another professor or something, I wouldn't get my parents involved, but try to be very mature, stern, and make him see the "treat others like you wanna be treated" aspect to all this if possible.9/13/2006 4:12:47 PM |

what's done is done. take your trip and take the 0.
but it's pretty irresponsible for your family to schedule a trip like that during the school year if it didn't coincide with official time-off from school. they could have scheduled it during fall break, thanksgiving, christmas, spring break or even next summer. it would have been just as meaningful and just as fun while not interfering with school. 9/13/2006 4:13:55 PM |

Ive taken lots of trips, flights, ect DURING the semester.
I DID THIS CRAZY THING. I checked the acedemic calander, and scheduled them over the breaks or weekends.
Youve been ignorant on two counts;
1. You didnt know the university policy 2. You didnt think to reschedule since it was in the middle of a semester
This is your fault. Take the hit to your grade or dont go. This is simple. You cant argue your way out. 9/13/2006 4:14:28 PM |

terrible comparison. 5 over ticket would be more like someone coming in 30 minutes late to an exam that has strict rules. some professors wouldnt let you take it, but most would be accomidating and let you either have a little extra time or just the remainder.
this is more like leaving late for work (lets assume you have an important job like surgeon) and having to drive 30 over. you've got to get where you are going, but because of your lack of preparation you have to pay the piper.

1) Your obvious implication was that the professor was incapable of achieving his position without inordinate assistance.
2) My parents dropping me in a garbage can would be a clear violation of the 'rules', unlike the current topic of conversation where a professor is actually (gasp) following the rules.
You should never expect someone to bend the rules for you. It's nice when it happens, but if you expect it, you're being selfishconceited.

i'm fully aware of the fact that it's purely a pleasure trip and that i can't expect the world of academia to accomodate it. i'm not so dense as to expect my professors to bend over backwards for me. i'm prepared to accept a zero or whatever it takes, but, as southpaw has said, put yourself in my shoes. would you not want to try every last option to make it work out for the best? all i am doing.
so you hardasses out there calm down a little and stop taking yourselves so seriously. and if you're going to troll, josh### & a tanzarian, at least read the thread first. i don't think i'm "getting dicked over," as i've stated several times, i know my professor is in the right and it's ultimately his call.
