you CANT do that and the reason why became extremely evident

after he deregulated medical dumping laws, the shores of new jersey were suddenly washing up hypodermic needles and medical waste

you can't let business regulate itself, just like you can't let government regulate itself. it's the whole reason we have a system of checks and balances and that system has to be present in business in order for business to not run away with itself

it's even taught in business classes, that's the reason we have anti-trust laws.

i will say this though, he may actually have set the stage for the 90s economic boom based on the fact that his policies bankrupted the soviet union, our largest "threat". once they were no longer in the picture we didn't have to spend so much on military build up. so assuming that's all true, kudos to reagan

You make a good point here.

But on the deregulation thing, you're missing what economics actually says about deregulation. No serious economist thinks that companies will self-regulate on things like the environment. They would if externalities were easily traced back to an individual company. As it is, there is a market failure in many cases due to these externalities.

The deregulation that we often tout (and the only kind that should be called "deregulation") is price regulation like the case in the airline industry in the 70s. After deregulation occured in that industry, the airlines ran a shit-pot load more efficiently. That's the type of deregulation I'm all for.

As far as medical dumping and that kind of thing, we need laws for a reason. Are you sure Reagan thought they would self-regulate or did you think the state's would regulate industry on its own? I'm not sure, because I'm not a huge legal history buff, but it seems to me that would have been the true aim of such a policy.
