for you to understand it, you'd have to understand electronics. when a computer component overheats, it has a lot of electricity running through it ... it has the ability to char without flame. it has the ability to melt without flame as well. it gets HOT.

you know what, go to an electrical socket, take a U-shaped metal object, hold on tight ... and stick it in the outlet, watch it char without flaming up.

**before you ask, no you won't die ... but you'll get shocked ... and see charring. the latter being what you're going after.

dude, if you just want to play bf2 and games of the like at full settings just stick with your agp mobo and get a 7800gs or something mid-ranged like that in agp. you're not going to get any performance boost buy switching to pci-e in those games.

well, if you want the fastest video cards on the market such as 7900gtx and 7950gx2 and the recently released 7900gto (ya i'm only naming nvidia here) they are only available in pci-e. They pack a helluva lot more horse power than any agp offerings which you need to play games like Far Cry and Oblivion at their max potential. Not to mention if you want to go SLI (dual or quad graphics cards) pci-e is a must. I was playing Oblivion on a 7800gt and just upgraded to a 7900gto and the new features i can activate and still play with no lag are amazing.

i agree with Battousai, a 6800GS or 7800GS will suffice in agp, i can play (w/ 6800GS) any game on highest settings, the only thing pci-e is going to give you is higher frame rate...

ok, except for maybe oblivion... but SLI or cross-fire is a waste of money

not necessarily. in most cases yes, SLI or Crossfire are not worth it but if you pair up 2 high end cards and turn up AA, AF and resolution you will get a considerable boost in performance. i prefer sticking with top of the line single card solutions though. Then again I have not experienced this for myself, little too expensive for me but have seen some reviews about it with actual charts and such testing SLI with Far Cry, Q4, and Oblivion.

basically just saying that if you want to turn up AA (anti-aliasing which reduces jagged edges) and AF (anisotropic filtering which makes texture detail clearer) you will want a much more powerful graphics card than is available in agp.
