I went by EB Games this morning because it was on my way to work.

Interesting that I brought this topic up yesterday because I got the call last night from a Gamestop that they were doing preorders this morning. I got the EB Games at midnight and slept in the car. No one even showed up until like 7:30 so it was useless to be there that early, but a bunch of people showed up after that.

I'm #1 in line for that store, so I should get one. Sweet...

I got mine from the EB at North Hills and they were all gone in 33 minutes. They got more pre-orders than any other store in the area by a decent margain.

I'd camp out for the opportunity to make +$1000 on ebay. I'm not even hard up for cash, but the opportunity is pretty damn good. 8-10 hours of being out in the cold to make a ton of easy money? Why the hell not?

You might say that people will take the 360, but IIRC the Xbox went for $800+ on ebay when the PS2 and GC were easy alternatives. The PS3 is (supposedly) much more powerful than the 360 and it plays blu-ray discs.

Ebgames only did pre-orders for the smallest amount they knew they would have. They will recieve more than this amount which will be available but they limited to ensure all pre-order people got systems. To put it this way they are not even putting a number (in line) at some EB games because they have been gauranteed the systems. I think that eb games will have the system when everyone else does even if the date does move.

the ps2 and gamecube had been out for 3-4 years when the 360 came out. they were not viable competitors. supposed extra power doesnt mean much to consumers when they havent seen results. all buyers know is that they are both powerful, next-gen systems and they will likely be seen as substitutes until sony proves otherwise.

the blu-ray player is the only decent point, but i doubt that is a major selling point for all but the biggest videophiles at this point.

oh you mean like last year when they did pre-orders for the amount of Xbox 360s they KNEW they would have. And then Microsoft wasn't able to meet production expectations so half the people that pre-ordered had to wait 2 months before getting one.

Yes, I realise that it was Microsoft's screw up that caused that, but still at this point Sony could cut back the numbers/push back the date/cancel the PS3 altogether and there's not a damn thing EB games could do about it.

So, no, a pre-order does not guarantee you will get anything other than $100 store credit.

worst-case scenario they said if you don't want the pre-order or something comes up they refund you the same way you paid. if you gave them cash today, you get cash back. if credit, you get credit, etc.

I think my phrasing was fine. It's ridiculous to think of the PS2 or GC as viable alternatives to the 360. In any case the point stands. The original Xbox sold for a lot of money on eBay offering virtually nothing more than better specs over the PS2 (and possibly Halo). The PS3 is in a similar situation with the addition of a small initial shipment, blu-ray playback, the Playstation name brand, and tons of other advantages the original Xbox didn't have.

Xbox came out in November 2001.

shrug perhaps. im sure it'll go for a lot, im just wondering % wise if it'll be as much as 360. i think most of the increased value lies in things that only the biggest gamers or videophiles would care about (except of course the brand name).
