I don't understand the dire urgency to alert the family. They're on a plane. Letting them know 2 minutes after his death won't help them stay calm on the plane. Let them land, get home to their comfort zone, and then alert them.

^^Agreed

However (even as a journalist myself) I believe it is bullshit that this has been made public without their prior knowledge

It's kind of hard to keep a plane crash visible by half of Manhattan under wraps. People would be pressing like hell if his name was witheld..

[Edited on October 11, 2006 at 10:29 PM. Reason : the mets 3b coach lives in that building.. ironic.]

"I fly a bit in small planes to start off.

Lidle was flying his plane in Manhattan. When you're out in general airspace you have to be at the least 1000 ft above any population center. I am sure Manhattan is a lot higher than 1000 ft, not to mention area airports are very draconian on where you can fly at (restricted airspace for a commercial airport in simplified view is like an upside-down birthday cake).

I don't see how Lidle was flying this low normally unless he had some kind of problem mid-flight (like the engine quit). If the engine quits, the airplane pretty much becomes a hang glider, and that's not a good thing to have when you're right above a city. If that was the case (losing the engine), his best case would've been to just do a controlled crash in the Atlantic or the Hudson.
"

For the sake of accuracy, you are wrong about the 1000ft seperation in this situation. I am a pilot, and have flown in the NYC area and have known for a while of the 'Hudson Corridor'. It is an airspace below the Class B airspaces that allows you to fly under the airspace (instead of going around) at a low altitude.

My guess for the cause is some sort of stall or situational disorientation. The visibility during his crash was 2 miles at JFK. IFR conditions in most airspace (except class G)

Okay. I've never flown around NYC, just in NC where the 1000ft rule is the "general" rule.

Bit surprising though, one of the main reasons for having altitude above a city (other than noise pollution) is incase something goes wrong with the plane it gives you enough time to find somewhere to land, like a farmer's field or something. A person can't find a field in NYC area, so taking away altitude takes away decision time. I guess the FAA's position is implying the pilot to just land in the Hudson.

Is flying in there as much of a nightmare as it sounds?

Depends on where you are going. TONS of air traffic. Flying into Linden, I think I fly at 700 MSL about 10 miles out. You pretty much have to stay under the shelf just about everywhere.
