I probably have more makeup than most people, with that said:
I probably only spend $25 a month(if not less) on makeup-that includes mascara, concealer, eyeliner, tons of different eyeshadows, blush, foundation, FAKE LASHES!, lipstick, etc. I have cases of makeup and I get it for good prices.
I go to ULTA to get bargains and that way I can get more stuff for less and also try new stuff without worrying about cost. I'm one of those people that wants makeup in every color of the rainbow so ULTA's coupons help with my cravings. I have tried many high priced items and wasn't too thrilled with any of them enough to re-buy.
Up front cost depends on how much makeup you want to wear-you could spend hundreds of dollars if you want the whole works and a brand name(like Urban Decay). If you only wear basics it would be much less. If you go to a makeup counter they will try to sell you everything they carry and you'll be left with a huge bill and makeup you'll probably never use.
I would get a good foundation to start but other than that(eyeliner, lipstick, blush, makeup brushes, mascara, etc.) I would go with cheaper stuff if I were you-unless you have the $ to spend on it. 10/13/2006 3:11:37 AM |

I want to thank everybody who gave helpful input.
I think i am going to spend a fair amount initially, mostly because i need a new foundation (clinique), and did buy a face case from urban decay but i"m running out of thec olors and some of them are being discontinued - so I want to get the full size ones while I can and then when I run out of those (which will be a decent amount of time for most of it - easily even with every day wear over 6 months) - find either new colors I like more in urban decay or another good quality brand or the same colors in another brand.
I will confess, no, I dont see a lot of difference in how the same color from dept store make up looks vs drug store makeup. What I *do* notice a lot of difference is how it feels on my face. I will without question turn down the most expensive brand out there if it feels too heavy or weird. (No, i dont wear a lot of makeup, I'm just incredibly picky when it comes to that sort of thing). The other thing that I have noticed is that the dept. store stuff/better brands seem to last longer - maybe I'm using less for the same look but I'm not entirely sure on that. And there is *some* difference in the look, mostly because I've found (personally, maybe it's just the brands I run into), the higher quality stuff blends better. It's not that you cant do the same look with the cheaper stuff, it's just a bit more work.
All of that adds up to it being worth it for me to go for brands like clinique for foundation and urban decay, sephora brand, and I"ll be experimenting with others. 10/13/2006 8:47:14 AM |

First of all, don't listen to these crazy guys, they're probably some kind of wife-beaters.
Second of all, you don't need to spend a lot of money on makeup. There is not really a difference between drug store and deptartment store brands. I have been playing with makeup for well over a decade now, and have just about every color imaginable.
The best place to learn HOW to do makeup is Allure magazine. They have really good tips and advice for application and technique.
If you really want to splurge on something, go for foundation and concealer, since the dept store can help you match the color. But in reality most people don't need foundtation.
Get yourself a really good moisuriezed (olay does not count!) i like Dove, but there are other good things too. The thing about using drug store brands is that you can try a bunch of different ones and finds what works best for you. Then moisturize before any makeup application, let it penetrate for at least one minute.
Use concealer on the areas you need. Use a sponge or your finger to blend, you need LESS than you think. If your flaws are still visible use a dab more. This takes a bit of practice to learn, but with a few tries you can get it down to about a minute. Then i suggest using a dusting bronzen, nothing will wake up your face faster. Use a large brush and brush it on where the SUN would hit your face. If you applied too much use some tissue to gently wipe it off. Then use a blush. Do NOT apply blush in one streak, use circular motions to apply on apples of cheeks and extend a bit along the cheeck bone.
You can stop at this stage, and it will give you a great glow for everyday. If you pluck your eyebrows and they don't hold their shape, use clear brow gel, works wonders.
Next step is mascara, eyeliner, shadow, lipstick--all those add more intensity to your look.
Of all the products that you do NOT need to splurge on, mascara and eyeliner are number one and two. No matter what people tell you, there is no difference. I like Maybelline unstopable mascara, it really doesen't get on your eyes. Liner does not matter. Rimmel, maybellin, L'Oreal, and ulta all make good liners. Revlon color endure will stay forever.
The key to keeping liner in place is to apply a bit of concear on your lids, let it dry. apply liner, let it dry. Apply poweder over liner, or if wearing shadow, apply it over liner. this will help set your liner.
If you like Urban Decay, try some of L'Oreal's HIP colors, they seem really intense, like they might do the trick, and the great thing is that you get like 3 for the price of the store brand one, of which you'll probably get tired anyway.
Good luck, and never apologize for doing to your body or face whatever the hell you want, idiot boys opionions are worthless 10/14/2006 1:42:20 PM |

By the way, if anyone actually looks good in blue shadow (and you might if you have light hair and blue eyes) I have some Benefit show off pigment and an eyeshadow both in shades of blue that I'd be happy to sell to you cheap since I know I won't use them. 10/14/2006 7:10:54 PM |

^u can get that at target, I like the eye shadows... white ppl may like the foundation. I hate the mascara, love the brow gel, and I don't wear colored glosses/lipsticks... 10/21/2006 10:02:51 PM |

oh really?^ hmmm I just got some email about it so I thought it might be useful for folks on here
Most of my make-up is MAC- I really love their Blot powder. I'm not sure how much I spend though-- I never really total it up, I sort of just buy what I need when I need it. 10/22/2006 10:24:36 AM |

i use clinique skin care line and makeup line. my stepmom is taking care of the skin care stuff for me until i'm out of school. the soap, toner and moisturizer come out to maybe $60 total and lasts quite a while. i use clinique's foundation and powder which are probably about $40 total and those last a while. then i just buy whatever mascara i can find for usually $6 or so. i don't really use anything else besides chapstick even though i have eye shadow, eyeliner, blush, etc. i'm too lazy. 10/22/2006 8:21:08 PM |

^ I absolutely hate Clinique's moisturizer, but the rest of its skin-care line is pretty good, at least from what I've tried. I remember liking the clarifying lotion when I used it several years ago, and there is some kind of facial bar soap I liked too. I don't know why the moisturizer sucks. A lot of people I know love it to death. 10/22/2006 11:17:32 PM |

i love cliniques mosturizer..i use the gel based and i've used it for years it gives my face enough hydration but not oily at all
I own a lot of foundations I have Estee Lauder for going out, bare minerals just for every day, neutragena sheer for the summer, and clinique (its kinda old and i dont use it very often)
One thing i would say though is don't pay for the money for those expensive brushes..you can go to acmoore or michaels and buy paint brushes and it's the exact same thing. I like them better because you can get a small enough brush to use as an eyeline brush etc. 10/23/2006 12:49:04 AM |
