I think they are speaking about base salaries. If I'm not mistaken the base salary is the same is Herb's was. The endorsements, appearances, etc are not factored in. Obviously Roy Williams will get more additional money than Herb would just based on demand alone..

I think coaches like Roy get mad loot for appearances and/or speeches at local Sportsman's clubs, same with Bobby Knight. I wouldn't worry too much about Bowles, seems like a petty thing to worry about. UNC arleady dropped the ball with Bunting. They will not drop it again. If RR is indeed using them to get a pay raise, UNC will have some insider intelligence to report this and thye will stop pursuing him (unlike hte Beamer situation, and Calipari), which I believe has already happened as RR isn't the top choice, whereas he obviously would be should he have shown any interest whatsoever, as RR is the best head coach out there who is rumored to be on the market, and just that, a rumor.
Oh, and athletes all over the country get new cars, regarding the Peppers thing. This is nothing new, Reggie Bush's family got free rent and free Hotel rooms, a paper trail is the only thing that would even remotely matter in coming down on them (It also negates the university from a lot of liability if the Boosters are the ones in charge of it and the university "claims" they had nothing to do with it, see tOSU regarding Troy Smith/Clarrett). A picture of him driving, bumping the system, or seeing him sign for it isn't a big deal. Jamison had a pimped out new Pathfinder in 97 when I went to their basketball camp years ago, and it was obvious it was "included" in his LOI. If anything, it's good business for the university, because it's going to come back ten fold to their booster club if they turn pro (Except in the Macy Webber situation), and I think one or two UNC basketball players have gone pro in the past. 10/27/2006 2:50:59 PM |
