Here's the thing.

Its not like they go and lay off their top 5% of the workforce.

I never thought "computer science" sounded funny, but "computer scientist" sure does.

ill vouch for their co-op program. i got some great experience and made a lot of money. i looked into getting a job with them after i graduated, but if i did, it would just be for 5 years or so. i couldnt see myself staying at that company my entire career.

they are a big company that feels like a big company.

I work at IBM and from what I've seen it is a great place to get a part time job while in undergrad. Pay scales based on how close you are to completion of your degree, very flexible schedules during the year, very understanding managers, at least in my experience (3 different ones), full time work is available during the summer ($texas for 40 hours/week), and then if you stay on during the year you get a sizable paycheck every week.

Standard coops get paid holidays and 5 sick days after 60 calendar days of employment (though my managers let me have a few days off way before that happened). Coops are not contractors, and the agreement you sign when you go to work states that the term of your employment can be terminated (with notice) by either party.

Also, I work with several contractors, each making $100k+ a year with almost a decade each, and another contractor I know has been with IBM since he helped write the Win32 executable binary format back when Microsucks and IBM were working together to develop OS/2 (that is a long ass time ago in case you don't know what OS/2 is).

If you despise Java, sorry but Java 1.4.2 is the standard language for most of the stuff at IBM because it is the easiest way (not the best imho) to support the number of OSes that they do.

So again, I can't speak for graduates, but if you are in undergrad and can commute to RTP this is an amazing way to actually experience working in the IT field for a large company and making yourself decent money too.
